Soulmates …

Nobody knows how it started, but once you're born, words appear on your wrist or collarbone that are the first words your soulmate says to you.

They're not noticeable at first; it usually looks like a smudge, and it doesn’t fully appear until you actually meet your soulmate.

So one day in the park, shortly after Peter Stark could talk, he noticed the faint black markings on his right wrist and went to his Mama, super confused.

“Mama, what’s dis?” He asks adorably, holding his wrist up so she can see it.

Pepper smiles, kneeling to Peter’s level, taking a look at his wrist at the smudge that has been there since he was born. “That’s your soulmate mark, Peter. It means that your soulmate is out there, waiting for you to find them.”

He smiles, his brown eyes wide in awe. “Really?!”

She chuckles. “Absolutely.”

“I hope my soulmate and I are like you and Daddy.”

“I hope so too. I just hope yours isn’t as annoying as your father,” she teases.

“I heard that,” Tony cut in, walking over to the two with ice cream cones, making Peter scream in delight as Pepper laughed and kissed her husband’s cheek.

From then on, Peter always wondered what his soulmate would be like. Would he or she have their mark on their wrist or collarbone? Would they like him or even want him?

From then on, Peter decided that he wanted to learn everything he could about soulmates; he had always been fascinated by it and wanted to know how people were destined to be soulmates when they don’t even know how to walk and talk yet.

For now, he was content watching his parents and friends find soulmates; it was like watching a romantic movie come to life, always hoping that someday he’d find his

He just didn’t expect it to go so wrong.

Peter was anxious, to say the least; it was his junior year, and he watched as his best friend Ned found his soulmate the first day of school.

The girl looked at Ned and asked, “Do you have a pencil I can borrow?”

Ned's response will forever make Peter laugh. “Uh, sure, pretty...I-I mean, Betty.”

And just like that, Ned and Betty Brant became a thing, much to the displeasure of one Flash Thompson, who had a crush on Betty, and as much as Peter was happy for his friend, he couldn’t help but feel defeated at being the only person in school besides Flash Thompson to not find his soulmate.

But then one day at lunch, as he ate the lunch Dad packed him: leftover lasagna, cut-up apple slices, and a bottle of water, talking to Ned about his latest Star Wars LEGO set.

“No way, dude! How many pieces?”

Ned couldn't help but grin excitedly. “4,016 pieces.”

Peter paused, looking at ned in disbelief. “That's amazing! We should build it this weekend. I am sure my Dad would be fine with it,” Peter ranted.

“I know, right, and it looks just like the actual Death Star,” Ned told him, taking a bite out of his pizza. “Do you want to rewatch Clone Wars again, or should we binge all the movies instead? I never know with you.”

Peter paused, thinking. “Clone Wars. Dude, I can binge-watch Star Wars with Dad anytime.”

Ned was going to respond when a voice cut him off:

“You guys are losers.”

Ned and Peter turned their heads to look at who said that; they’d never heard that voice before.

Oh, it’s Michelle.

“Then why do you sit with us?” Ned asked, his brows furrowed in confusion.

Michelle shrugs.

Peter was shocked. Then he started to feel his soulmate mark tingle and itch on his right wrist. All he could do was blush. He had never heard Michelle talk before.

“Wait…you can talk?”  He blurted out, noticing Michelle grab her wrist, her face going slightly pale before glaring daggers at him.

“Excuse me?” She asks.

“I just mean that I’ve never heard you speak before.”

Ned couldn’t help but notice them grabbing their wrists.

“No fucking way…” He murmurs, making them turn to him curiously.

“What?!?” They ask in unison.

“Look at your wrist,” he tells them.

They look down at their wrists, noticing the once-black words are now golden, but they can’t see the words yet because of their jacket sleeves.

“That’s just great; my soulmate is an idiot. That's the worst first line to say to your soulmate, Parker,” she grumbles.

Peter blushes.

“Well, I am sorry, Michelle. I just never heard you speak before.”

Michelle nods, turning back towards her book. “MJ, my friends call me MJ.”

Peter smiles, his cheeks bright pink. “N-Nice t-to meet you, MJ. I’m Peter Parker.”

She looks up from her book and rolls her eyes. “Yeah, I know.”

“So do we need to change our plans orrr?” Ned asks, snapping MJ and Peter out of their trance of staring at each other, MJ going back to her book, Peter turning to Ned.

“What? No, plans are still on.”

“Aren’t you going to ask me out, Peter?” MJ asked, quirking her brow, smiling slightly.

Peter blushed, turning to look back at her. “Uh... yes... I, uh…Michelle, would yo–”

“MJ,” she stops him, glaring at him playfully.

“Right…MJ, would you like to go to homecoming with me?” he asks, his voice cracking nervously.

“Yes, I very much would, soulmate,” she teases him, causing Peter to blush brightly. “You’re  very cute when you blush, Parker.”

“Stark,” he thinks, blushing even more.

“You guys are so weird,” Ned mumbles.

MJ chuckles, turning to Peter with a smirk. “I'll see you Friday, soulmate,” she says, leaning down to kiss his cheek, then she walks away.

“Se...see ya then, soulmate,” he manages to shout, causing her to turn back for a second; then she blows him a kiss and continues her way to the library; she's got a book to return and one to finish reading.

Ned grabs Peter's wrist harshly. “What does it say? What does it say “

“Ow, dude!” Peter exclaims, rubbing his wrist.

Ned cringes. “Sorry, sorry. I am excited. What does it say, Peter?”

Peter rolls his eyes, rolling down his sleeve, showing Ned, who laughs.

“Oh my god!”

Peter raises his brow. “What?” he says, looking at it. He couldn’t help but stare at it, stroking it gently with his thumb.

There, in golden script, were the first words MJ said to him: “You guys are losers.”

“Oh, fuck my life,” Peter groaned.

Ned couldn’t help but laugh, but Peter didn’t care; he finally found his soulmate, and he couldn’t wait for Friday. He stroked his wrist softly, a wide smile on his face.

Finding his soulmate was everything. It was worth the wait, even though he said the dumbest line possible to her, which is now tattooed permanently on her wrist.

Somehow, he thinks that she won’t mind.
