Summary
Shane first meets Ilya the winter of 07'. The omega is 16 years old, just like him, and already mated. There's a fucking dog collar around his neck.
He's the best hockey player Shane has ever met. He beats Shane, at the most important competition of his life, and then disappears into the black hole of omega abuse that is the Russian system for the next eight and a half years.
Then, the 2014 Olympics happen. Then, overnight, the world is faced with the talent that is Ilya Rozanov, and becomes conveniently so much more open to the idea of omegas in sports.
The Metros become more open to it. They become open to the idea, too, of pairing a newly-out Shane with the most socially acceptable secondary gender for him to be mated to, if he's going to insist on being gay.
It's not Shane who buys out the remainder of Rozanov's contract, but it is Shane who picks him up from the airport, and who's expected to mate him before the summer is up.
Shane agrees to go through with it, because Rozanov agrees, and he wants to help Rozanov get the fuck out of Russia. He's wanted to help the omega get out of Russia since he was 16 years old- but neither of them are the same people anymore.
