SAN DIEGO—The report released during a mundane Monday morning.

It's common knowledge throughout the world that Project Hail Mary is the sole reason for our continued survival. Led by Eva Stratt, a controversial figure among even the most neutral parties, the project was funded and put into motion in record time. 17 years ago, the world said farewell to three brave humans without knowing if the plan would lead to any kind of solution. A year later, and the Astrophage plaguing our sun is all but eradicated.

While no official statement was made by the project's leaders, many suspected the divisive nature of Stratt's temporary solutions and their world-wide impact resulted in a zero-contact policy. While the world is thankful to everyone on the project and their work in restoring the sun, no one can deny the lasting effects that will likely never be reversed. After all, nuking Antarctica isn't just something that can be undone.

At 1100 PST, the leaders behind the Project Hail Mary mission released an extensive document detailing a complete report on what occurred on the Hail Mary, as well as hundreds of edited video logs.

The ship had a crew of three people: Yáo Li-Jie (Captain), Olesya Ilyukhina (Engineer), and Ryland Grace (Scientist). The Project Hail Mary report shares the tragic news of the captain and engineer passing en route to their destination, leaving Dr. Ryland Grace as the sole survivor.

What follows is nothing short of a miracle.

Hey, can we not headcanon an identity on a real person? I'm all for aroace representation, but that's a real human and deserves the bare minimum of respect. I see a lot of people on twitter and tiktok digging up photos of Dr. Grace before the launch and speculating on his potential romantic relationships (which… the Stratt/Grace thing is a whole other can of worms) and idk… it doesn't feel right. It's the same as forcing an actor or content creator to officially declare their sexuality, except Dr Grace literally cannot. The least we can do is respect his privacy.

I was a head engineer on Project Hail Mary. AMA.

Director Eva Stratt brought me on about 2 weeks after the official statement released with details on Astrophage and its new identity as being a cell. I worked on a Chinese carrier (we called it Stratt's Vat) before finally settling at the home base in Russia. I helped coordinate with the scientists and astronauts in order to design a functional ship that could support all it needed to do as well as keep the astronauts as comfortable as possible.

Due to the nature of my position I am going to remain anonymous, so you can decide whether you want to believe me.

The centrifuge: A dream solution for the scientists, a nightmare for the engineers. Unlike a regular ship where astronauts can exist in zero-g, the Mary had to accommodate for extremely sensitive scientific instruments in lab. The scientists were thrilled, because it meant they could rely on the astronauts having tried and true, off-the-shelf equipment. But us engineers now had to design a centrifuge system that needed to work to the .9999 percentile as well as figure out the logistics of how the ship would look/feel in zero-g compared to 1g. Our team was divided into different groups depending on the project (group for exterior, group for centrifuge, groups for interior, etc.). Our "break room" was more of a communal study area.

I never really thought of it like that. We all knew what this mission was about, and it was something that could never be changed. We tried to keep things light, whenever possible. There were karaoke nights, movie nights, and so on. The Hail Mary was their final resting place, so we made damn sure to design as much "quality of life" things as possible. The Health Node (what Dr. Grace called the "Don't Go Crazy Room") was our proudest work. The 360 degree screen placement and 5.1 sound system created great immersion.

Haha, I knew someone would ask about this. For the longest time, we all thought there was something sexual going on between them (none of us suspected anything romantic). Apparently, Dr. Grace was approached by DuBois et. al. and was thorougly horrified to know of these rumors. I found this out second-hand. In our defense, he did act like a puppy around her. She'd walk and he'd follow, kinda thing. I don't personally think anything was happening between them.
