If someone had told BigB six months ago that he’d be spending Christmas Eve at his boss’ house, he probably would’ve laughed them off. He was much more comfortable in his own space, where he had no obligations and no-one to entertain. But now, as he took in the motley assortment of coworkers and plus-ones in Lizzie’s living room, he couldn’t imagine it any other way.

As the baby leaves unfurled, he and BigB stumbled through milestones together: a tentative first kiss at the Fairy Fort. Mumbo’s first time sleeping at B’s apartment. A breakfast photo posted to his story, their interlocked fingers just visible in frame. The first time B had slid a thumb under Mumbo’s waistband, and he’d murmured a shaky yes. If Mumbo was being honest, it didn’t feel real; it felt more like a halcyon memory. Something he’d cling to when it all went wrong.
Maybe that was it—if he asked, and B said no, then it would go wrong.
Four times BigB doesn't ask Mumbo to officially be his boyfriend, and one time Mumbo finds out why.

Summary
The first time BigB saw Scar smile was in the orientation circle at the start of Third Life.
Scar wasn’t even looking at him. He was bustling excitedly in a random direction like everyone else, getting ready to collect materials and run into each other at random places and make teams and eventually kill each other.
The smile was excited, plain and simple. Scar was happy to be here, looking forward to the game. He had heard the pitch, heard the rules, signed the contract, felt the laws of the world plug into his code, and he was still expecting to have a good time.
That was dangerous, BigB decided.
