   Summary

“Apollo here did one-hundred and twenty-four races before she was retired from injury.”

He can’t help it, he laughs. “Sorry, sorry,” he apologizes immediately. He looks up at Dottie, whose brow is furrowed in confusion. He rushes to explain himself. “I’m… I was a hockey player, you know?” She nods, with the distinct expression of someone who knows that Shane is a hockey player but hasn’t bothered to look into it much more than knowing that exact fact. “My number is— used to be twenty-four.”

Shane retires, and it takes adopting a dog for him to fully realize just how hard it is on him.
