Motivation

Summary:

Stiles is hoping their basketball team wins the big game. Derek is too, for a slightly different reason.

Notes:

Written for the Tropetember prompt "Age Changes AU" in which I aged Stiles up a few years to match Derek

Work Text:

Stiles leaned forward eagerly, watching as the timer counted down. Just a few minutes left, and they were ahead by four points. He was only a bench warmer, but the basketball team was really good this year, and they were well on their way to winning their first game of the season.

Camden fouled one of their guys, and he took his two penalty shots, tying the game. Stiles chewed on his thumb in nervousness, desperately wanting the team to win through sheer force of will. As a bench warmer, it didn't matter that much to Stiles who won or lost, but it meant everything to Derek.

Derek, Stiles's boyfriend, was the captain of the team, and thus winning was important to him. He did his best to lead the team, despite his less than gregarious nature, and despite the fact that the others teased him frequently about dating the bench warmer instead of a cheerleader. Derek just growled at them, but Stiles put them in their place with a few sarcastic quips and the occasional slashed tires. Not that the son of the well respected sheriff would ever slash anyone's tires!

No, that was Derek's younger sister Cora, who teamed up with him and used her werewolf claws to her advantage. Stiles knew his dad had an open police file for the petty vandalism that included 4 different tire slashings around town, and furthermore that they hadn't been able to identify the weapon used to puncture the tires. Werewolf claws for the win.

The last time it had happened, when Greenberg had been bitching about having to take the bus to school that morning, Derek had just grinned at Stiles smugly and reeled him in for a thank you kiss. Stiles could tell the different kinds of Derek kisses apart, just like he could read Derek's eyebrow language, and those were definitely thank you kisses.

Stiles had promised Derek a very different kind of kiss for every basket that he scored tonight, and so far he had more baskets than the rest of the team combined. And not just because he used his werewolf strength and senses to his advantage. Derek was very conscious of his skills, and usually downplayed them on the court. Tonight, however, he had a different motivation than usual, and had been tearing it up against their bitter rivals from Redding.

With three seconds left, Derek tossed the ball half the length of the court, and Stiles kept his fingers crossed as the ball sailed through the air, then dropped through the hoop with a swish, just as the buzzer sounded.

They'd won!

And by his count Stiles owed Derek 24 kisses and something extra for that final three pointer. Stiles leaped up from the bench and dashed into Derek's arms. Throwing himself at his boyfriend, knowing he'd be caught, Stiles gave him the first of many enthusiastic kisses.

"Damn," Coach muttered from beside him. "If that's how you motivate him, keep it up, Bilinski. We might even win State."

Stiles pulled back from the kiss and gave the crazed man a cheeky grin. "Will do, Coach." Then he dove back into his boyfriend's very willing embrace and kissed him again.
