Summary
While his companion sinks onto a nearby bench to wait, the older man counts cars and street lights, patiently whittling his smoke down to the filter. Only once he's extinguished it in the complimentary outdoor ash tray does he speak again, breaking the peace they've found in waiting for the next leg of their trip.
"Why have you invited me out, if I'm such an inconvenience to be around?"
Jayce glances up, round hazel eyes pained and defeated and humiliated in equal measure. His thick brows furrow, soft lips drawing into a line, fingers pinching the bridge of his nose. He takes a breath, searching for the words he wants. "Because we're going to be spending the next month together," he sighs, "and it'd be better for us both if we got along."
