"Oh, Zuzu, save the diplomatic groveling," Azula interrupted, standing up. She smoothed the front of her silk robes, her golden eyes glittering with a sudden, dangerous spark of life that had been missing for six years. "It's brilliant. It's the most hilarious, desperate thing you've ever done."
"So... you accept?" Zuko asked, blinking in surprise.
"Accept?" Azula stepped toward him, snatching the scroll from his hands. She unrolled it, her eyes scanning the heavy calligraphy. A political marriage. A permanent relocation to Republic City. An estate of her own. Immunity from the Fire Nation tribunals. A position of absolute, unassailable relevance at the right hand of the most powerful figure in the world.
"I have been rotting in this palace for six years, Zuko," Azula said, her voice dropping to a sharp, deadly whisper. "I would marry a platypus-bear if it got me out of this cage. Tell the monk I said yes."
