Two Idiots Talk

Summary:

Purple hates Red. Of course they do! Red abandoned them without a care in the world, let them be blacklisted and live in poverty. And then, they have the gall to hire them on their ship? The nerve! Good thing Purple can just stay in Security for the entire trip and never see Red ever again, right? There's no way they'd get stuck inside of Security because of this idiot, right?

Right?

Notes:

My first Among Us show fanfic! I'm a huge fan of Among Us, as anyone who knows me would know, so me writing this was inevitable! I hope to write more fics in the future (including some I already have planned), so I hope this one-shot makes for a good introduction to the show fandom!

If you like my writing, check out my other Among Us fic lol

Work Text:

Purple clicked away as they watched the large monitor full of the different security cameras surrounding the Skeld.

“Piece of shit…” They muttered to themself, wondering why they were even doing this. The cameras didn’t record and everything was in black and white.

Seriously! What were they supposed to do with this? These cameras were completely useless and cheaply made, which was pretty ironic for such a successful company like MIRA.

It made them wonder why they were even hired for this job anyway.

Well, that’s not true. They KNEW why, and it was because of the dumbass captain, Red.

Tssk. This guy. This fucking guy. They couldn’t believe they were on Red’s ship. Red’s fucking ship. Ever since their falling out, all they wanted to do was get away from this guy, and yet they found themself stuck on a spaceship with this asshole.

And like always, they seemed as oblivious as ever. Still cheerful, still greeting them with that dumbass grin on their face.

Oh, Red must have been eating this up, huh? They were probably giggling to themselves over the fact that they had power over Purple and was the only reason why Purple even had a job to begin with.

Red probably thought this was some sort of fucked up sense of mercy. Or maybe an apology? Maybe they did feel bad for what they did and this was an indirect way of trying to make it up to Purple.

…Yeah, right. Like someone like Red could ever feel guilty for their actions. If they really felt so bad, why didn’t they ever reach out to Purple? They were best friends when they were interns but then Red let them take the fall for everything and proceeded to never contact Purple again until recently.

Sorry their ass.

Purple kept clicking through cameras as their mind wandered back to Red.

Ugh, it was so stupid that Red was still able to overtake Purple’s thoughts like this. They shouldn’t even be thinking about this traitor.

Red abandoned Purple and sold them out without a second thought. Red probably hadn’t even thought about Purple in years, so why should Purple let Red take up so much of their mental energy?

Purple pushed their thoughts aside as they went back to mindlessly scrolling through the cameras.

Cyan and Black were in storage, inspecting the ores. Yellow and Brown were in the kitchen. Blue was in the medical bay, with Lime crawling around in the vents nearby.

White, Green and Orange were all chatting in the cafeteria.

And Red was…

…

Where’s Red?

Purple knew the last thing they should care about was what Red was… but their job did dictate that they had to know the location of all crew members on the ship so… off they went.

They clicked through camera after camera, trying to find out where Red was. Navigation? No. Fucking figures. Red was so incompetent that they left the station they were supposed to be at.

Whatever. It wasn’t Purple’s problem if Red got into trouble. They just hoped it wouldn’t screw them over.

But, considering how much Red had already fucked Purple over, would that really be much of a shock at this point?

Camera after camera and still… nothing! Purple couldn’t find this guy anywhere. They scrolled through all of the cameras but didn’t see any sight of Red.

Where did they go? It’s not like they vanished or anything. Maybe Purple wasn’t looking hard enough, or maybe Red had-

The door to Security opened behind Purple. They instinctively jumped and turned around to see… Red, standing by the doorway before walking in.

Purple’s face soured almost instantly.

They turned away from Red, their attention going back to the cameras as Red casually strolled up to them with a chipper attitude in their voice.

“Hey there, Purps!” Their voice boomed out, making Purple sink in her chair as they thought about how they were gonna get out of it.

“…Hi.” They muttered, their voice strained and unamused. Purple wanted to make clear to Red that they did not want Red here, but honestly, this guy was too much of an idiot for subtlety like that to be wasted like that.

A few moments of silence washed by the pair as Purple could see Red just staring at them from the corner of their visor.

Purple sighed, trying to ignore Red. They hoped that they would eventually get tired of being here and leave to go bother someone else.

Purple clicked on a camera.

Red was still there.

They clicked on another camera.

They were still there.

Purple could see Red leaning against the wall, their foot propped up against the wall with their arms crossed as they just… stared at Purple. Not the cameras. Not anywhere else. Just… Purple.

They groaned loudly.

“You know… it’s kind of distracting to do my job with you staring at me like a weirdo, right?”

Red’s visor widened, as if they were unaware they had been awkwardly looking at Purple for the past five minutes.

“Oh! My bad, Purps!” Ted chuckled, rubbing the back of their head.

Purple sighed and turned their chair around to face Red, “Why are you even here? Do you need something?”

“Just checking on my crew!” Red answered, “Gotta make sure you’re all doing your jobs!”

Purple’s visor narrowed as their voice dropped, “I see…”

“Anyway,” Red replied with a dismissive hand gesture, “It’s your turn to be checked up on so… how’s Security going?”

“Oh, just great.” Purple sarcastically replied, “Not only do these cameras not record, but they’re in black and white, so I can’t tell who’s who.”

Red looked like they barely understood what Purple meant.

“You know, for a multi-billion dollar corporation, you’d think they’d bother getting us better equipment but I guess not.”

“Hmm…” Red groaned, “Well, I’m sure you got it! It’s not that big of a deal anyway.”

“Not a big deal?” Purple sputtered, “If something happens, I can’t go back to check it and I can’t tell who’s who on this thing. If we have a real emergency, things can go bad-!”

Red chuckled dismissively and patted Purple’s head, “Purps, Purps… I know you’re worried and that’s great but nothing bad will happen, and you know why?”

Purple mentally rolled their visor.

“It’s because I’m the captain of this ship, so everything’s gonna be fine and you can stop worrying your little head about it.”

Purple brushed Red’s hand off as they glared at Red, “Right. Aren’t you supposed to be manning the ship right now?”

Red paused, gave a nervous glance and laughed once more, “It’s… clear outside! I checked! Don’t worry about it.”

“Very reassuring.” They sarcastically replied, “Well, as you can see, I’m fine. I’m not hurt or anything, and I’m kind of busy so… bye now.”

Purple turned in their chair to face away from Red, looking back at the cameras. They half expected Red to take the hint and walk off to annoy someone else, but Red didn’t.

“Wha-! Hey! Come on, Purps! It’s been a while. Can’t we just… chat?”

Purple didn’t turn to face Red, just giving them a dismissive noise as they rolled their visor, “We’ve got nothing to ‘chat’ about. Now, if you excuse me-!”

Purple was cut off by Red spinning their chair around so they were directly facing Red. Red was much closer than they were before.

“Gah-! What the hell is your-!”

“Come on, Purps! We haven’t spoken to each other in years. Why are you trying to push me away?”

Purple scoffed. They couldn’t believe this. The absolute gall of this asshole to act surprised by the fact that they didn’t want to see Red was astounding. Purple knew Red was stupid. Everyone knew Red was stupid, but come on!

Purple glared at them, their patience now running thin, “Look, I don’t owe you shit, okay? Especially after everything you did to me. So, why don’t you just fuck off and leave me alone?”

Red looked stunned for a moment, their visor widening in shock by Purple’s sudden outburst.

“Woah, hey, what’s with all of the aggression, Purps? Is it that time of month or something?”

Purple nearly exploded. It really did take them everything to not sock them in the face.

“Oh my god! You cannot be this stupid! Did you just forget what you did to me?”

Red titled their head.

Purple slapped their forehead, “You know? Back when we were interns? And you just accepted MIRA’s NDA and left me to take the blame for the colony’s reactor failure? Does any of that ring a bell for you, Red?”

Red was silent for a few moments, looking down at the ground. They gulped, “Look, Purps, that… I was trying to fix a bad situation, okay?”

Purple scoffed, “Oh, really?”

“Yeah, really.” They argued back, “I-I mean… look, what did you want me to do? MIRA’s a giant company! There’s nothing that we could have done. Even if we did expose them, so what? They have people everywhere. They could have had us killed or snatched away in the middle of the night to never be seen again!”

Purple just glared, clearly not believing any of this bullshit.

“And, look… in the end, it worked out, didn’t it? It’s not like anyone even died at the colony anyway! And, I got promoted to being a captain and now we’re back together so… all’s well that ends well?”

Red said this with an awkward shrug, hoping Purple would understand.

Their glare told Red otherwise.

“Are you kidding me?” Purple shouted, “You seriously think that’s a good excuse?”

“Well, now, I didn’t say that-!” Red started, only got Purple to cut them off.

“You abandoned me! Instead of being my best friend and sticking by me, you went off and joined a shitty organization and became their little lap dog! They fucking blacklisted me from everywhere! I couldn’t find a job for years. I was barely scraping by, Red!”

Red looked away awkwardly, unsure of how to respond.

“And where were you, huh? Oh, that’s right! Being a corporate bootlicker!” They argued.

Red raised up a finger, “Now, that is NOT true-!”

“Why didn’t you ever call, huh?” Purple asked, completely brushing aside his comment, “Several years passed and you never once tried to call me! I waited. I hoped, but nope! You never did. Guess you were too busy sucking up to your bosses, huh?”

Red glared, starting to get fed up, “Okay, Purple, what did you WANT me to do? Call you and say I’m sorry? Would you even believe me? I didn’t know what to say!”

Purple said nothing.

“See! That’s the problem! You’re selfish, Purple! You only think about yourself, don’t you? What did you want me to do? Throw away my life so you could play hero? Did you want us BOTH to be poor and blacklisted?” They said, getting even closer to Purple’s face.

They continued, “I bet you had this whole idea in your head where we expose the ‘evil’ corporation and we’re all hailed as heroes, right? Well, guess what, Purple! You need to wake up and live in the real world with the rest of us! That was never gonna happen! There was, and is, nothing that you or I can do against MIRA! And it’s stupid of you to blame me for not wanting to give up on my life and my dreams to follow you into… nothing!”

The two of them said nothing as they just glared at each other, breathing heavily. Red looked into Purple’s visor for a while, and his heart softened a bit.

Red didn’t say it, but they could tell that Purple looked more… defeated? They still kept their angry glare at Red, but Red could tell something had broken.

After a moment of silence, Red tried to speak up.

“Purps… I-!”

Purple held a hand up, “Don’t. Whatever. Nice to know that’s how you really feel.”

Their voice was sarcastic but tinged with bitterness, “In that case, I promise you, the moment we get on Industria and ship off these stupid ore plus crap, you will never see me again, okay? Okay.”

The room was somehow even more empty now. Again, the two just stared at each other. No more words were exchanged. Nothing more needed to be said.

Red’s legs began to ache from standing for so long. Their fingers drummed lightly against their thigh as their chest ached, more than it had ever done before.

This… this wasn’t right. They didn’t want this. This was supposed to be their chance of clearing the air with Purple and fixing their issues and their friendship; not break it away completely.

That’s why Red had hired them in the first place. The truth was… Red was aware of Purple being blacklisted. It’s what the MIRA higher ups told him when he joined their organization.

“Someone has to take the blame for this unfortunate incident, after all.” Red was told, “And between such a handsome and up-and-coming leader like yourself and your bitter, lonely friend there, it’s obvious who’s responsible for this tragedy.”

Red thought… they didn’t know what they thought. They weren't REALLY expecting forgiveness but maybe… gratitude? Or at least, Purple would know Red still had them on their mind even after everything? Just… something!

Red knew they fucked up. Granted, they knew it from the day they signed the NDA but they really fucked up this time. How could they have said all of that? They didn’t REALLY mean any of that. They were just…

Stupid. Purple was right; Red really was a dumbass.

Red couldn’t have their relationship end like this.

“P-Purps, come on…” They stammered, “You know I didn’t REALLY mean that. I’m… look, can we just start over?”

Purple didn’t say anything. They simply glared at Red.

Red was starting to get a little desperate, “O-Okay, look, you were right, okay?! I’m an idiot! I don’t even deserve to be here! I’m a terrible friend who betrayed your trust and you have every right to hate me, okay?”

Still nothing.

Panic set in, “Come on, Purps! What do you want from me? What do you want me to say?! Please! I really am sorry! You’re all I have left…”

Purple scoffed, their visor narrowing in on Red. They couldn’t believe this! The gall of Red to come up to them and tell Purple that they were all they left? Were they joking?

What an asshole.

“I’m all you have left, really? You sure didn’t fucking act like it. Don’t come to me like you’re sorry this time when we both know you’re not.”

Red stayed silent as Purple glared at them.

“Fuck you, Red. Go to hell.” They declared, making Red’s visor widened in shock at the harsh words thrown their way.

“Purps…”

“Now, can you PLEASE do me this one last favor and just leave me the fuck alone?”

“…Purps…”

“RED!” Purple yelled out, slamming their hand against the security desk and hitting a button.

Almost immediately, alarms began to ring and a voice called out, “LOCKDOWN INITIATED! LOCKDOWN INITIATED!”

Red and Purple both looked to the door as it slammed shut and locked behind them, the alarms still ringing out throughout the entire ship.

Purple covered their ears as the noise became overwhelming, and scanned over at the security desk before pushing another button, turning off the alarm and setting the ship back to normal.

The two crew mates stared at each other in shock for a moment before Purple rushed over to the doors, trying to get it to open but to no avail.

“Fuck! FUCK! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!” They yelled out, slamming their fist against the locked metal door.

“Woah, Purps? What happened?” Red asked.

Purple turned back to face them, “I hit the stupid fucking… security lockdown button… shit. These doors aren’t gonna open for at least two hours.”

Fuck. Goddamnit. Now Purple was trapped in here with this idiot for 2 hours. Could this get any worse?

They leaned their head against the door, unsure of what to do. They could tell Red was staring at them from behind, their gaze burning into their back.

Purple banged their head against the metal door in frustration before taking a deep breath and turning around, “What do you want, Red?”

But Red didn’t respond. They instead looked down and rubbed their side with their hand. Purple looked at them for a moment before shrugging.

Whatever. Not their problem. At least Red would now shut up.

Purple walked back to their chair and spun around in it in boredom. They weren’t sure what they should do now. Sure, it was good that Red wasn’t gonna bother them any longer, but they still had no way to leave, and they had nothing else to do.

So they just spun around in their chair. Spinning and spinning and spinning as the gray colors of Security flew by them in a flash.

Their fingers drummed against the handles of their chair in a rhythmic motion. Their feet brushed lightly against the floor before they stopped, not wanting to make themselves dizzy.

They turned over to Red, seeing them now sitting against the wall, staring down at the floor as they curled themselves up into a ball position, looking guilty.

Purple tilted their head, staring at the broken captain. It was a bit strange to see him like this. It was like all of the energy was zapped out of them.

Purple wondered if they maybe went too far in what they said. Yes, they were mad at Red, but maybe telling them to go to hell was a bit too harsh.

…

No. Of course not. This guy sucked. It didn’t matter how guilty Red felt. It wasn’t Purple’s problem. They weren’t Purple’s responsibility. Red made their choice and now they had to accept it.

A sniffle. Purple heard a sniffle. They could see Red’s chest heave up and down as they sniffled again, rubbing their visor aggressively. Red started to shake a bit as they buried their face into their knees.

…

Goddamnit. It wasn’t Purple’s problem. It wasn’t their problem. It wasn’t their…

Without even realizing it, Purple had already scooted over to Red. What the hell were they doing? This was stupid.

Red was an asshole. A no-good, selfish, spineless, corrupt, arrogant, oblivious and honestly downright stupid asshole.

And yet… and yet…

Purple found themselves leaning against the wall that Red was sitting in front of and took a seat next to them. Their visor softened with empathy as Red really started bawling.

This should have been pathetic. Purple should have been happy. Red finally realized their actions had consequences? That should have been their dream.

And yet…

“I really am sorry.” Red said, muttering underneath their breath, “…If that even means anything to you at this point.”

They shivered, the bitter taste of their vulnerability and failures felt like bile in the back of their throat as they spoke, “I… I don’t know. I guess I was… scared? I was just really scared of MIRA, but I was honestly more scared of you.”

Purple didn’t reply. They only sat there and listened.

“I… I knew I messed up, Purple. I really messed up. I didn’t want you to take the fall for it, but… I… I didn’t want to say anything to MIRA. And then you got blacklisted and I completely chicked out.”

They continued, “I didn’t know how to tell you what I did or why I did it. I didn’t want to call you and feel bad about what I did. I… I was scared I’d find you and you’d tell me you hated me and we weren’t friends anymore.”

They let out a bitter laugh, “Guess it happened anyway.”

“We don’t… we don’t have to be friends anymore. If you really don’t want to see me ever again after this, that’s okay. I… I understand. I guess I just… wanted to tell you how I really feel about you.”

Purple’s visor widened as they realized what Red was saying.

“Wait-!”

“I love you, Purple. Like… I’m in love with you.”

Purple was frozen, their expression stuck in a look of shock, confusion, fear and a slight bit of relief.

“A-And I’m not saying this because I’m e-expecting anything! I mean, I know you hate me but that’s okay. I just… I mean… I-I… I just wanted you to know but you don’t have to DO anything about it! We can just sit here and… oh god.”

Embarrassed, Red pulled down their captain’s hat to cover their face.

They were shaking now. They couldn’t believe they just said that. Their deepest, darkest secret was now exposed for Purple to hear and react to and… oh god.

What was their reaction? Fear? Disgust? Contempt? Laughter? Red could imagine it now. Purple looking at them disgusted before scoffing and laughing it off. They could never actually like someone like Red. Not after what they did to them.

Red really was…

“God, you’re such an asshole.” Purple remarked, breaking through Red’s thoughts.

Red looked up at Purple as Purple face-palmed.

“I mean… ugh! Why’d you… why’d you have to say that now?!”

Red blinked, looking around the room awkwardly, “…Uhh…”

Purple continued anyway, “I-I mean… fuck! Now, I gotta rethink everything you did and said and…”

Purple got into Red’s face, making them squeak, “When did this start?”

“I-I… uhhh, I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?!” Purple asked, irritated, “What do you mean you don’t know?!”

“I-I… I don’t know! What do you expect? Do I think I have the date written out?!”

Purple grimaced as they leaned their head near Red’s body, instantly making them tense up.

“Great. Fucking great. As if this situation couldn’t get any worse,” Purple moaned.

“…Sorry? What do you want me to-!” Red started to say, their argumentative side starting to flare up.

They paused, realizing they were in no position to demand anything from Purple. Not to mention, starting another argument wouldn’t be too helpful right now.

“…I’m sorry.” They said, their voice barely above a whisper.

“Fuck my life.” Purple said, rubbing their hands against their forehead before sliding them down their face.

Purple turned towards Red, “You’re a real piece of shit, you know that?”

Red nodded in agreement.

Purple looked up, letting out a sigh. “I mean, if you’ve been in love with me this whole time, then why did you… why did you do any of this?”

The captain looked over at the ground, “…I’m… not too smart.”

“Well, yeah, but that’s not the real reason, is it?” Purple asked, before curling themselves up into a ball. “I mean, it’s still a shitty thing to do no matter what, but… I’d, in some fucked up sense, get it if you just saw me as a friend, but…”

Red thought about their response as Purple trailed off. They gulped. They really didn’t want to be here. They didn’t want to give an answer. Despite everything, they still didn’t want to be honest, but…

“…I was scared. I was so scared. I wanted to call you. I really did, but… a day passed and another day and… eventually, I… stopped thinking about it. I didn’t want to pick up the phone and hear you yell at me and tell me how much you hate me and never want to see me again and how we’re not friends anymore and… and…”

Red steadied themself, “I thought I blew my shot. Not just… being with you, but of fixing this. So much time had passed since we were interns and what happened and I… I just didn’t want to deal with it anymore, I guess.”

Red scoffed at their words, “What a shitty response, right?”

Purple was silent for a while. Red felt the uncomfortable tension between them rise as they waited for a response. Maybe they should say something? Offer another apology? Just do something other than sit and wait with nothing but their thoughts and racing heart.

…No. They shouldn’t. This wasn’t about them. They had to wait until Purple was ready.

A few more moments passed, those of which were spent by Red nervously tapping their fingers against their thighs.

“…I would have answered,” Purple responded, turning to Red. “I mean, you’re right. I would have been super pissed off, but… I’d be happy knowing you were still thinking about me.”

“I was thinking about you! All of this time I was thinking about you! Purps, I’m always thinking about you! You’re always on my mind!”

Purple raised an eyebrow, “Always?”

Red felt their cheeks turn red…der than their normal skin tone, “I mean… not always always but like… always, you know? Because saying always sounds like you’re always on my mind and you are, but not always, you know? And, I’m talking too much, aren’t I?”

“Too much.” Purple replied, their voice sounding a bit lighter. It fell back to its neutral tone as they said, “Why didn’t you tell me this years ago? I mean, why are you telling me this now? Is this supposed to convince me or make me feel bad or something?”

“No! Of course not,” Red said, shaking their hands, “I just… wanted you to know, I guess.”

Another chuckle, “And I didn’t tell you because… who likes being rejected, you know? I know you haven’t said it, but it’s obvious you don’t feel that way towards me…”

And there it was. Red gave them the opening for it. To break their heart and confirm what they already knew deep down inside. As long as the possibility exists, Red couldn’t truly move on.

It was better for both of them this way.

“Go ahead. You can say it. I… I won’t be mad. It’s… more than fair, really.”

“…Do you think I’m that much of an asshole? Saying stuff like that makes me feel worse, not better. You sound so… pathetic.”

Red frowned, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you-!”

“…And, I don’t know how I feel! I mean… I hate you. I wish you would just go away sometimes. Every time I look at you, I get angry and I wish you were gone from my life,” Purple ranted, “But, I also look at you and I… want… something? I don’t know. You have such a stupid, punchable face, but you also have a…”

Purple stopped, but Red could have sworn they saw a bit of blush on Purple’s face. A small smile twitched on their face for a second before Red force themself to stop.

No! Now was not the time to start fucking smiling like an idiot! Focus, Red.

Purple glared at Red as they saw their stupid smile. Stupid. So fucking stupid. So many crewmates out there, and yet… and yet…

As Purple said before; fuck their life.

“Uhh, it’s okay that you don’t know,” Red said, breaking the silence, “Even if you do like me like that, we don’t have to be together.”

“Even though I would really want that,” Red muttered under their breath.

Purple deadpanned at Red, “It’s not that easy, Red. I mean, even if I do… love you, it’s not like we can just start dating like nothing happened. I still… hate you and I can’t trust you anymore. How could we ever be together like that?”

Red clicked their tongue, “Right… yeah, you’re right.”

Another few moments of silence passed.

“…Shouldn’t be stuck in here for much longer. Just a bit more time and the doors will open.”

“Gotcha.”

Red began to fiddle with their hands.

“…What are you gonna do now?”

Purple raised an eyebrow, “What do you mean?”

“I mean, you said you’re gonna leave. Are you still gonna…?” Red hesitantly asked, “Because it’s okay if you still want to go. Even if I don’t want you to…”

Purple sighed, “Well, I dunno. I… I can’t just leave now.”

“You don’t have to feel obligated to stay here because of me.”

“It’s not that,” Purple said, “I mean… after everything that happened between us here, I’d be a major asshole to just leave.”

Red frowned, putting a hand on Purple, “Purps, you’re not an asshole.”

Purple looked away, “Thanks.”

Red flashed them a smile and their heart did that stupid thing where they felt warm on the inside.

Stupid. So fucking stupid.

“But, don’t take this as if we’re friends again. You've got a long way until then.” Purple sternly said, glaring at them.

Red scratched the back of their head, “Gotcha. I mean, I’d figured anyway.”

“Yeah.”

Another awkward moment passed between them, but it wasn’t too bad this time. They waited for the time to pass as they took small glances at each other until the doors opened.

And eventually, they did.

“LOCKDOWN OVER! RESUMING ALL NORMAL ACTIVITIES.”

The Security door opened slowly and Red and Purple stared out into the hallway.

“Fucking finally.” Purple grumbled as they brushed themselves off and stood up. They stretched a bit as they could see Red starting to get up too from the corner of their visor.

“Well, uhh, I guess we’re done now.” Red said with an awkward chuckle, trying to keep a smile.

“Yeah, I guess so.”

Despite the open door, neither one of them left. They instead seemed very interested in looking around the Security room.

And each other, but they didn’t want the other to know that.

“…So, uhh, are we… I mean… are you… can I… do you…” Red started to say, stammering all the way before suddenly going silent.

“What?”

“I mean, like… are we cool now? Not like… ‘cool’ cool since I know you’re not cool with me because of everything that happened but I just wanted to know if we’re ‘cool’ li-like… you know! ‘Cool’, you know? Like, can I… you know, like… ah, forget it.”

Purple snickered slightly. Just slightly though.

“We’re… ‘cool,’ I guess. You can like… hang around me and stuff. Just, you know, don’t push it.”

An awkward smile plastered itself on Red’s face.

“You got it!”

Their heart flickered once again.

Stupid. So stupid.

Well, at least Red would never know based on their outer appearance. Purple was pretty good at keeping a poker face.

The two of them stared at each other for a bit longer, until Green popped in through the doorway, peeking their head in.

“Oh, hey cap! There you are! Orange wants to talk to you about what just happened with the lockdown. Something about how MIRA wouldn’t like this and it had to be reported?”

Red sighed and grimaced, “Figures…”

They turned to face Purple, “Well, uhh, I’ll see you later?”

“Yeah. See ya, Red.”

Another soft smile from that idiot. Another fluttering of their heart as Red left and Green followed after them. Purple could hear Green asking if they were stuck with Purple in Security the whole time.

As soon as the two were out of sight, Purple let the mask drop. Their heart started to race rapidly as they felt themselves begin blushing.

Fuck.

Purple was in love with that idiot.

Notes:

If I had a nickel for every time I wrote about a masc character betraying a fem character and that masc character revealing that they're in love with a fem character, I'd had two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice. But, luckily, this is a one-shot and won't devolve into a 300k fic I've spent 2 years writing. Hahahaha...

Also, fun fact, in the original version of this fic, Red and Purple were going to fuck before Green interrupted them, got embarrassed and made up some excuse about White needing them (I love PaidIntern), but when I actually wrote the damn fic, I realized there was no way to make it fit without making it REALLY forced so I went with this instead.
