Summary
Thomas Thorne has always possessed an excess of sensibility.
What he has acquired, rather more recently, is circumspection.
Two years after the end of Alison’s marriage, another accident leaves her able to touch the ghosts of Button House. Suddenly Thomas can take her hand, sit beside her on the sofa, read Austen over her shoulder, and discover exactly how difficult two centuries of incorporeality have made ordinary physical restraint.
Alison, meanwhile, makes a rather more unsettling discovery.
Thomas never stopped loving her.
He had simply stopped laying the whole enormous weight of it at her feet and asking her to do something with it.
Which, it seems, makes it considerably harder not to fall in love with him.
