Work Text:
Young Prince Grox and his little friend, a frog, lay in the courtyard of flora native to the county (withered flowers). Wearing flower crowns made poorly but worn none the less. Neither of them really cared about how it looked. Just about who made them.
Grox was 15, froggy just a few months away at 14.
They were young and free, free to do what they loved and liked.
Normally the two would get into some trouble together, stealing bread from the royal kitchen or accidentally knocking over vases, which Grox took the accountability for every time while ignoring froggy trying to confess. Today however had been tiring so they opted for the courtyard instead.
Froggy and Grox talked back and forth for a while. The conversation shifted fast but what are you to do? They are just teenagers who chat alot. Sometimes you run out of things to talk about when your side by side everyday.
‘Hey Grox, when do you think your gonna get married?’
Froggy blurted out. He had never been the best at timing but the wither had grown fond of his habit, maybe even finding it a little cute at times.
‘When my father tells me too. I’m not bothered though. I mean that’s ages away! I need to find a good lady to court or whatever before I even consider getting married.’
‘Sounds boring.’
‘It is, even with all my lessons about it they still keep drilling it into my head like I’m a little kid! Like all I’m good for is to be married off somewhere!’
Grox fell onto the soft grass, looking at the clouds. Froggy observed his face so closely.
‘I-if you had to choose right now. Who would you marry?’
‘Uh….if I had to choose right now…probably you.’
He rolled over to avoid the frog seeing his flushed face. Immediate embarrassment washed over him. Oh wither why did he say that?!
‘I would marry you too. In fact I don’t think I could see myself with anyone but you.’
Froggy lay down next to Grox and turned his head so that they were looking at each other. He gave the most beautiful smile. And for a moment, the world stopped. It was just them two and the flower field.
Until Grox broke the moment.
‘That’s kinda gay tho’
Froggy burst out laughing.
‘Yeah I guess bro’

August 28th. Today was the day, he was getting married. But it couldn’t be worse. She was chosen out of little selection. A month before was the first time he even met her. The only reason he chose her way because…her green and blue hair, the fact she was a frog. She ever so slightly resembled Froggy. He wished he was there, Grox had invited him to be the best man but Froggy couldn’t bear watching it. Honestly neither could Grox. But it would have been better if he was there, just to see his eyes before he wasn’t his anymore.
A knock on the door snapped Grox awake.
‘Come in.’
His father, the wither, walked in. Suit and tie with a black withered flower in the front pocket.
‘I’m so happy for you son.’
He placed his hand on Grox’s shoulder and looked to the mirror. It made him want to throw up slightly. This isn’t how it was supposed to be.
‘Thanks…father.’
He took a deep breath as the wither adjusted his hair.
‘Go on, make me proud out there.’
It smiled. But something in Grox’s chest pained. He couldn’t do this. No, not without froggy. What choice did he have though? They had last gotten into a big argument a week ago. They hadn’t talked since then and it was driving Grox insane. He needed him, didn’t Froggy see that?
‘I will.’
He said with a mass amount of unease. His hands sweat.
‘I will…’
He repeated, smaller,more uncomfortable.

Froggy watched from the balcony as people flooded to the castle, right…the wedding. Taking another swig of the beer, Froggy watched as people filtered in.
He hadn’t forgotten, just tried to convince himself it was fake, would be called off any moment. Yet the day still came. Grox was to be married. His prince, his…boyfriend. If you would still call them that. Some part of froggy foolishly believed he could go against his family, choose him. Choose them. Maybe- maybe… It had been all over the news paper, everyone was so happy for their prince that no one ever questioned his happiness. Froggy could remember the look on his face when he told him, first to know. There was no joy, only grief. He could feel how he didn’t want this, how could Froggy even blame him? He had begged Froggy to just stay with him for the wedding, he needed him there. But Froggy couldn’t do it. Even the concept ached his chest too much. Maybe it was for the better I mean he always knew this day would come. He couldn’t marry a lowborn boy. This girl was a stranger. She was beautiful, sure but Grox deserved the world. Grox deserved to be happy.
He didn’t bother getting dressed, his casual attire. Button up dress pants with a sheer top you could see his chest through, long blue and green hair down to his waist flowing behind him. Crown given by Grox himself on his head.running down the apartment building without much thought on how stupid this idea was. No, it couldn’t be stupid. It was Grox. Flower crown in hand, he sprinted through the empty streets. Everyone was there, guests waiting with a cake as tall as them. Beautifully decorated in forget me nots. Grox hated forget me nots. The bride would be in a beautiful dress, the wither waiting at the altar.
The castle doors were in sight. Guards that recognised him spotted and for some reason nodded, making way for him. He was grateful. Slowing down to nod back.
‘Make our young prince happy.’
He smiled, grabbing another guard my the hand as they looked to Froggy. He instantly recognised them.
‘Thank you, cookie, yeahjaron. (Cracksship lol)
They opened the door for him.
‘STOP THE WEDDING.’

Everything was just as it “should’ve” been. Everyone sat, almost the entire city came. He could feel all of those eyes on him. This is what he needed, this is what he wanted…right? Blue flowers decorated the massive hall, the other kingdom's colour. He fidgeted with his hands. Straightening his blazer and adjusting his hat. Part of him was grateful that Froggy wasn’t here, he wouldn’t have been able to hold anything in. He could imagine how hurt his eyes would have been, tears watering in those beautiful waterfalls. How his tail would sag ever so slightly when he didn’t want Grox to know he was upset.
Trumpets sounded, the bride walked down the aisle. But Grox didn’t see a stranger, instead he chose to imagine her as Froggy. Hair tied up in a bun as his father walking side by side with him. Carrying a bouquet of his favourite flowers they used to pick from the flowerbeds. Wearing that same flower crown.
Taking his place beside Grox as he hesitantly lifted his veil. But it wasn’t his frogs face. No.
He couldn’t listen to the vows, watching as this random person's mouth moved in and out. It was so wrong. The way the corners of her mouth automatically turned down, contrasting froggy, or how she didn’t forget to blink every so often. No. Why did he do this.
Suddenly, the doors burst open as all eyes turned to look at the person of cause.
‘STOP THE WEDDING!’
He screamed. They made eye contact from across the hall. The world disappeared once again. He tugged at his hands to let go of the woman’s. Turning to face his beloved.
‘GROX, YOU CANT DO THIS. DONT WASTE YOUR LIFE AND WEAR YOUR HEART OUT. YOU DON’T HAVE TO PRETEND! Please. Come with me.’
Grox ran down to meet him. His father tried to pull him back but it was no use. Grox had his mind set on his froggy.
‘Froggy!’
Tears streamed down his face as he picked Froggy up in a princess twirl, kissing him in the landing.
‘There’s my sweet wither.’
They pressed their foreheads together.
‘Aight bet! fuck all of you!’
Grox picked Froggy in one hand and flipped off everyone else. They all stared in shock. The girl sobbing at the altar as they left.
