Chapter Text
Enid woke up and immediately felt like she was gonna pass out again. Her body ached and her head throbbed like she’d been hit over the head with a sledgehammer. The grassy ground beneath her was wet and cold. Patches of melting snow were scattered around. The wind blew bitterly despite the sun peaking through dark clouds. Enid looked around, trying to remember what had happened but it was difficult.
She remembers searching for food.
She remembers the other pack circling her, eight fully grown werewolves with pure white fur.
She remembers slashing one of them in the snout with her claws.
She remembers successfully drawing back the smallest one before the rest jumped her.
She remembers the feeling of their claws digging into her abdomen.
And she remembers a girl coming to defend her. A girl with two black braids.
“Wednesday” Enid breathed.
Wednesday had been there. She had helped her fight the wolves off. Together they managed to stir the rest of the wolves back except for one. The last one was clearly the leader, their wolf was bigger than the others and stronger too.
The wolf had lunged at Wednesday and raised its paw in a shift motion, claws extended. Wednesday had managed to dodge the attack just enough to avoid getting cut but the white paw still collided with her face. The contact caused a nauseating thud to sound off the trees. Blood dripped onto a wilted flower.
Then, with a great howl, one the pack raced towards Wednesday. She had no choice but to run or get mauled.
Then the memories stopped coming, as if a brick wall was blocking their path.
Enid cursed and stood up shakily, her legs wobbled like a baby as she took a step. She wondered how long she’d been stuck as a wolf. Each step felt like walking on solid ground after ice skating, her feet tingled. As she walked her eyes scanned her surroundings, searching…hoping.
A snow crunched behind her. Enid turned around to see a figure standing across the way. Most of her features were drowned out by the sun but Enid could make out a few things. She was wearing a long coat with thick boots. Her black hair was styled in two braids.
A relieved breath escaped the blonde girl. Her voice came out hoarse and soft but she willed it to carry as she spoke.
“Howdy Roomie.”
Wednesday huffed fondly before sprinting toward the young wolf. Enid didn’t know what she was expecting, but it definitely wasn’t a hug. Yet, their bodies collided with such a force it knocked Enid over. She fell back on the wet grass as Wednesday’s arms wrapped around her waist.
Without hesitation Enid raised her arms to return the embrace. She nuzzled herself into the seer, she smelled like almonds and leather. She felt Wednesday breath on her neck.
“If you ever do something that stupid again, I will kill you myself!” Wednesday threatened, her grip tightened around Enid like a cobra.
“Saving your life was stupid?”
“Sacrificing your humanity for me was stupid.” the goth girl corrected,
Enid smiled, “I missed you too.”
“Why did you run from me?” Wednesday asked, her voice muffled by Enid’s shoulder.
“What?”
“After you fought off the last werewolf you ran, why?
Enid paused as she tried to recall what Wednesday was talking about but she couldn’t. It reminded her of when her dad would tell her stories from when she was really little, yes they happened but she would never be able to remember them fully.
“I don’t remember that.” Enid confessed. “I fought off the leader?”
Wednesday nodded as best she could while still holding on to Enid. This was no doubt the longest physical contact they’d ever shared, and Wednesday initiated it. The thought made Enid’s heart flutter.
“I haven’t seen you fight that fiercely since Tyler.” Wednesday said with a slight amusement. “I think you’re even stronger now.”
“Did I scare you?” Enid wondered.
Wednesday looked at her with a raised brow that made Enid laugh for the first time in who knows how long. It felt good despite the pain in her ribs. Wednesday had pulled away just enough so Enid could see her face, moving her hands to Enid’s shoulders.
“You’re freezing,” The goth frowned before removing her coat, reaching out to give it to Enid. As she did she caught sight of the wound decorating the lycan’s side. It was just below her ribs and about five inches long. The cut was raw and bright red in color, half-dried blood stained pale skin. “And bleeding.”
Enid took the coat from Wednesday and wrapped it around herself like a blanket. When she was finished, she finally focused on Wednesday’s face. It was exactly like she remembered. The only difference was the crimson blood pooling from her nose and down her chin. Slowly, she raised her thumb and wiped the blood off her face but more started flowing. The seer’s skin was as cold as ice.
“So are you,” Enid replied, worry clear in her tone. Her hand lingering on Wednesday’s cheek.
“It will stop eventually.” Wednesday muttered while bringing her hand up to rest atop Enid’s.
They stayed like that for a moment, sitting on the forest ground hand in hand. They were both too scared to let go in case the other would disappear again.
“You’re alive.” Enid whispered with a soft smile, finally taking in the situation.
“So are you.” Wednesday echoed with a look in her brown eyes that could only be described as a mix of relief and admiration.
