Work Text:
The sound of fighting reached Peter’s ears as he stepped into the Compound.
The Compound had been unusually quiet when Peter had entered. He had been dropped off by his Aunt May who had kindly driven him out to the Avengers building. Peter hadn’t been there in a few weeks due to school commitments. He had spent one week in DC with his his decathlon team, bringing home a first place trophy. This trip had gone much better than the last time and Spiderman hadn’t made an appearance much to his Aunts pleasure. Then Peter had spent the weekend celebrating with his team before they got stuck into their studies for their upcoming exams.
Between studying and Spiderman, Peter hadn’t had the time to see his mentor and father figure, Tony Stark. The genius had been busy himself but had promised that once Peter’s exams were over, they would celebrate.
“We’ll start at the Compound,” Tony had said. “Then we’ll head out to the Lake House.”
And that had been enough incentive for Peter to work hard. It had been too long since they had been at the Lake House. With Morgan starting pre-school, the Stark family had decided to move back to New York to be closer for Peter and Morgan’s schooling. They kept the lake house, using it as a getaway for long weekends and holidays.
Peter loved that he was still close to the Stark family. And it had brought tears to Peter’s eyes when Tony had said;
“You’re my kid too. Morgan’s big brother. Of course we want to be close to you.”
It had been overwhelming in the best way and Peter had hugged Tony tightly. With the aftermath of Thanos and returning from being dead, Peter had seen a lot of changes. The biggest, but maybe not the most surprising, was his relationship with Tony. The genius was much more open with his affection and calling Peter his kid. Meeting Morgan had been a huge shock and it had almost knocked him to his knees when she had called him his big brother. Tony’s eyes had been sparkling when he had looked at the two of them, his smile watery and Peter had understood. It had taken some getting used to, but Peter now called Tony ‘dad’ freely and he vowed to be the best big brother to Morgan.
He had missed his little sister while he had been in DC, FaceTiming with her every night. Now that his exams were over, Peter planned on spending some quality time with his little sister and the rest of his family.
But all thoughts of spending time with his family left when the hairs on his arm raised, along with a familiar tingle that ran down his spine.
Peter dropped his bag, fiddling with the webshooters on his wrist until his latest Spiderman suit was encasing his body. The usually hustling compound was empty, no staff anywhere in sight. Peter sprinted down the hallways, launching himself on the wall and using his powers to stick, crawling along and up to the ceiling.
“Hello Peter,” Karen greeted as Peter crawled his way along the high ceilings.
“Karen! Can you scan the building for anyone?” Peter asked, trying to keep the panic from his voice.
“Scanning now,” Karen said. There was a beat before his AI spoke again. “I am picking up several signatures in the gym.”
Peter crawled faster as his heart picked up in speed. As Peter got closer to the gym, the sounds of the fighting picked up. Peter was able to pick up Tony’s strained grunts and Peter picked up the pace.
As soon as the gym was in sight, Peter was crashing through the doors and throwing himself into the fight. Peter only had eyes for Tony, who was without his Iron Man suit, sweat beading on his forehead, face set in concentration as he fought a blonde woman that Peter had never seen before.
Peter reacted. He swung himself full force at the girl. He aimed a web at the girl, catching her arm and he yanked her out of Tony’s way and into his path. Peter’s legs connected with the girl and he kicked, the woman flying through the air and landing on the padded mats with a loud thump.
Peter landed in front of Tony, his stance protective.
“Whoa! Kid! Stand down,” Tony said, placing a hand on Peter’s shoulder.
“Dad! Are you okay?” Peter asked, not taking his eyes off the girl who was climbing to her feet.
“Fine kid,” Tony said.
“Who is she?” Peter demanded. “What’s going on?”
“This is my sister, Yelena,” Natasha said as she approached the blonde woman. When the spy reached her sister, she held out her hand, helping the blonde to her feet.
“That was a good kick, Spidey,” Yelena nodded, accent thick. “Very quick.”
“Dad?” Peter said, swallowing thickly as he slowly straightened.
“Yeah kid?”
“Did I just attack Black Widow’s sister?” Peter asked, voice barely above a whisper.
Tony chuckled. “Yes you did. I forgot to let you know that she was going to be here.”
Peter nodded. “It was really nice knowing you, dad. Tell Morgan I love her.”
Tony barked a laugh, wrapping his arm around Peter’s shoulder and hugged him into his side. “You’re not going to die, kid.”
“No. I’m just going to disappear and never be heard of again,” Peter panicked. “Ned get’s all my Legos.”
“No need to start your will yet, kid,” Tony said.
“I don’t think you are taking the seriously enough,” Peter hissed as Natasha and Yelena made their way to them. “Oh god. This is the end. Quick, I need a quote for my tombstone.”
“Here lies Peter,” Tony said, deadpanned. “He was a dramatic little shit.”
Peter squawked.
“You are much better than what the media makes you out to be,” Yelena said, nodding at Peter. “Smart. Keep your enemies guessing.”
“Thank you,” Peter said. “Please don’t kill me.”
“She won’t kill you, Peter,” Natasha smirked.
“Yet,” Yelena added with a smile.
Peter’s knees almost buckled.
“Leave the kid alone,” Tony said. “He was protecting me, even though I’ve told him a million times that it’s not his job too.”
Peter rolled his eyes. “Yeah, like I’m not going to try and save you.”
“You have very good form,” Yelena said. “We should spar.”
Peter perked up. “Really?” Peter looked at Natasha. “Is this a trap?”
Natasha smirked and said nothing.
“If it is, you’re already in it,” Tony said, squeezing Peter shoulder tightly. “Good luck kid.”
Peter sent Tony a panicked look but before he could beg his dad to hide him away, Yelena was attacking.
Peter was thrown into a fight, his attention shifting to focus entirely on Yelena. As they sparred, Peter founding himself not thinking that he wasn’t about to die and found himself keeping up with the Russian spy. Its a workout that Peter hadn’t expected to be involved in but by the end of the fight, Peter had enjoyed himself.
“I like you,” Yelena grinned at Peter as he took off his mask, sweaty and panting for breath.
“You’re so awesome,” Peter panted through a grin.
“Nice work,” Natasha praised as she approached them again, Tony by her side.
Peter preened under the compliment.
“And as much as I am delighted and terrified of you two bonding,” Tony said. “Pepper just messaged, she’s arrived with Morgan.”
Peter lit up. “Mo’s here?”
Tony face softened in that paternal smile Peter had come to recognise. “Yeah, kid. She’s been pestering us all week to see you.”
“Go,” Yelena said. “Spend time with your sister.” Yelena gave Natasha a look. “It’s important.”
“Thanks,” Peter said. “How long are you here for? Maybe we could catch up later.”
“I’m not sure,” Yelena hedged. “But I would like to see you again.”
“Cool!”
“Hit the showers, kid,” Tony said, steering Peter away.
“Bye!” Peter waved to Yelena as he let Tony guide him towards the exit of the gym.
“She’s so cool Mr. Stark,” Peter breathed as they made their way to the showers attached to the gym.
“Got a crush, kiddo?” Tony teased.
Peter felt his face flush. “No.”
Tony sent Peter an amused look but didn’t tease him further. He opened the door to the showers for Peter and let him through. Before Peter could could get to far, Tony stopped him by calling his name.
“I wanted to say thanks,” Tony said, giving Peter a proud look. “For ‘saving’ me.”
“Any time, dad,” Peter said, infusing as much sincerity as he could.
“I love you, kid.”
“Love you too,” Peter beamed.
“Go. Shower. Prepare yourself for Hurricane Morgan,” Tony grinned right back.
Peter let out a little whoop and headed for the shower. It wasn’t the reunion he had expected but he was glad to meet another member of the Avengers. And his heart fluttered as he recalled Tony’s proud and thankful expression. Fake or not, Peter would do anything to protect his dad. The world may need Iron Man but Peter needed his dad, his family, and he would do anything to protect it.
