Work Text:

Eda slowly opened her eyes and immediately regretted it. “Ugh,” she groaned, pulling the blanket over her head. The sun was way too bright, and her head was pounding as if a horde of ratworms had run through it. She couldn’t remember how much apple blood she’d drunk, but it couldn’t have been that much. As far as she could remember, it had been a great party. The mood was good because they’d finally managed to break the coven sigils. That called for a celebration, but that’s where her memories ended.
She slowly sat up and scratched her stomach. It was already after 10am, but it was the weekend and she didn’t have to go anywhere. Still, she needed to do something about her hangover quickly before her whole weekend went down the drain. So she got dressed and stumbled down the stairs. The smell of freshly brewed coffee wafted toward her, but it only cheered her up a little. For some reason, she felt a queasy feeling in her stomach when she saw Raine in the kitchen. Raine had gone to the party with her, but didn't seem to have a hangover at all.

“Morning,” they said, and something in their tone made Eda flinch. She’d done something wrong. If only she knew what. “Morning,” Eda said and sat down at the table next to Raine. The atmosphere was tense. “Wow, what a party,” Eda said, trying to break the ice, but Raine didn’t take the bait. “You could say that,” Raine replied curtly and took a sip of their coffee. Damn, she had definitely done something, and it had to do with Raine.

What on earth could it have been?
Did she throw up on them?
Did she tell everyone that Raine whistled songs in their sleep?
The harpy thing?

Her thoughts were racing so loudly that Raine must have heard them. “You don’t remember.” It was a statement, and Eda nodded guiltily. “I’m sorry,” she said immediately, and Raine gave her a sour look. “You know I don’t like being in the spotlight, and then you just ask me something like that out of the blue? I can’t believe it,” they threw their hands up in the air. Eda’s heart sank. “What did I ask you?” Her face flushed red with a mixture of embarrassment and nervousness. She had a vague idea of what she might have asked Raine, but she needed to hear it from Raine directly. “You asked me if I wanted to become ‘your person,’ and then you just fell asleep in my arms. Everyone was staring at us—it was…” Shaking their head, they left the room. Eda could understand their anger. She knew about Raine's fear of being the center of attention, and she had practically put them on display. But there was one thing that weighed on her mind even more than her guilty conscience.

“Raine,” she called after them and followed closely. “What did you answer?,” she asked aloud, but to her surprise, she couldn’t see Raine in the living room. As she entered the room, she looked around, searching. “Eda,” she heard Raine’s voice and looked down to see Raine kneeling on one knee next to the couch. She covered her mouth with her hand when she saw the little box in the other's hand. “Raine,” she whispered, unable to say anything else. Raine chuckled, “You really surprised me yesterday. I’d actually planned something else, but since you beat me to it,” they looked up at Eda and smiled at her lovingly. Their heart was pounding wildly in their chest. Raine wasn’t mad at Eda about yesterday, quite the opposite actually. “To answer your questions from yesterday,” Raine smiled at Eda, who had tears in their eyes. “I, too, don’t want to have to do without you in my life anymore. I love you, and I can’t imagine ever wanting anyone else by my side. That’s why,” their voice trembled as they opened the little box with nervous fingers. “Eda Clawthorne, will you be my person?”

Instead of answering, Eda swept Raine off their feet and kissed them passionately. “Of course I want Rainestorm,” she said between kisses, and Raine happily pulled her closer.
The little box and its contents, a pair of identical earrings, lay on the floor, unnoticed by the two of them. It wasn't until later that each of them would wear one of them and never want to take it off again.
