Work Text:

"You look absolutely pathetic, you know."

"No I don't," Luffy says, his voice nasally as he gives a mighty sniff, the blanket around his shoulders unable to hide the thin line of sweat across his skin and red tint to his cheeks. He's wobbly even though he's seated on their bed, "Move Torao, I need to go to work."

"You aren't going anywhere," Law says firmly, hands on his hips as he stands in front of Luffy's swaying body. "How do you expect to fight fires like this? I already called your chief and told him that you're running a fever of over a hundred. You're just lucky that I'm off duty this week or you'd be having Nami-ya coming over to take care of your pathetic ass."

"Noooooo…" Luffy moans as he slumps back against the pillows, a violent sneeze escaping him and making him sniff back the mucus. "She charges a sick fee Torao, I just got out of debt."

Law shakes his head, he grabs the box of tissues and tosses it to his husband, "Wipe your nose, you know that I took this week off to get away from sick people, not to get stuck in my own house with one."

Luffy blinks his large doe eyes at him, a shine of sweat across his face and a dazed look across his eyes, "Torao… I want some tea."

Law stares at him in disbelief then he sighs and turns to leave the room, "Of course you didn't hear a word I said, of course you didn't. Why would you? Who am I? Oh just your average surgeon who decided that getting married to their collage sweetheart would be a good idea. Did I listen to my parents? No. Did I…"

Law keeps this stream of disgruntled mutters as he marches into the kitchen and starts the kettle. He grabs Luffy's favorite mug from the top shelf and brings the breakfast tray out of the cabinet before going to the pantry to grab the box of tea and a bag of plain crackers.

He pulls his phone out of his pocket and sends a quick text to the group chat, otherwise he'll be getting at least five people knocking on his door asking about his husband when he doesn't show up for work or bombard their phones with his constant memes throughout the day. He ignores the stream of well wishes and 'get better' texts that come through first, then he smiles at the next flood of 'I told you so' that begins.

See Luffy had been off duty yesterday and got stuck in a sudden down pour of rain with his friends. And instead of taking shelter with them, he decided to dance in the rain in the middle of November, thus the result of him now laying in bed sick with a fever. Law had no sympathy.

At least that's what he tells himself as he carries the tray laden with their typical at home sick kit back to the bedroom. Luffy hasn't moved an inch from where Law left him but his eyes are closed and his snores are interrupted by bursts of coughing and choking on mucus.

He gives a sigh, laying the tray down on the floor before going over to the bed, "Come on, you idiot, you're going to kill yourself on your own mucus."

"Torao…" Luffy whines as Law slides his arm under his shoulders to make him sit up, quickly grabbing the pillows to pile them up behind him before laying him back against them.

"Now, here's what we're going to do," Law says, bending over to pick up the tray and place it across Luffy's lap. "You're going to drink your tea and eat as many crackers as you can while I start the shower, then we're going to get you cleaned up and try to get some of the mucus out of your system with the hot water. And then we'll build our fort."

Luffy blinks slowly as he takes a small sip of his tea, a smile peaking on his face, "Our sick fort?"

Law nods, patting Luffy's knee under the blanket before standing and heading for the bathroom, "Where do you want it set up this time, Lu-ya?"

"Living room," Luffy says softly, giving a big sniff as he ruffles through the cracker bowl. "We can catch up on Seafarers, we haven't gotten a chance to watch it."

Law chuckles under his breath as he steps into the bathroom, he pulls out a pair of clean towels from the closet and lays them down the counter. He opens the cabinet under the sink to grab the unscented body wash and shampoo, Luffy's nose was extra sensitive when he was sick even when it seemed like he wouldn't be able to smell anything at all.

He steps over to the shower and takes out the body washes and shampoos from the shelves, just in case Luffy grabbed them by accident, before placing the scent-free ones inside. He glances into the bedroom as he passes the door, Luffy is still sipping his tea but the bowl of crackers is empty, he nods his head as he stuffs the bottles into the closet and heads back to the shower.

"Come on, Lu-ya, you need to get in the shower, you know it'll make you feel better," Law says as he walks into the bedroom after turning on the shower, the hot water already starting to steam up the bathroom. Luffy blinks slowly at him, the mug between his hands shaking slightly with the effort to hold it up. Law sighs as he reaches over and takes the empty mug away from him, placing it on the tray before pick it up and setting it on the floor. "This cold has really wiped out whatever brain cells you have left, huh?"

Luffy sniffs, "That's mean Torao."

"Yeah well," Law mutters, pulling the blanket back and scooping his husband into his arms. "I'm not the one shivering like a wet cat under the blanket."

Luffy curls into himself against his chest as he carries him into the bathroom, "I'm cold, Torao."

Law places him on the counter, placing the back of his hand against his forehead, "You're actually burning up, Lu-ya, you're going to have to take some medicine this time."

Luffy curls his nose in disgust, his shivers subsiding when Law closes the door and the room starts to fill up with steam, "That's yucky, Torao."

"Would you rather go to the emergency room?" Law asks, hiding his smile when Luffy immediately shakes his head, whining about it making him dizzy as he takes his sweaty shirt off. "Then you'll just have to suffer with the yucky medicine then."

Luffy grumbles under his breath as he steps out of his pants and into the shower, Law can hear him moan with relief as he picks up the dirty clothes off the floor and throws them into the laundry basket. He slips out of the bathroom when he hears Luffy aggressively blowing his nose and starts stripping the bed.

He comes back into the bathroom with an arm full of Luffy's favorite comfort clothes, he places them on the counter and he can see the outline of his husband scrubbing his hair through the fogged glass of the shower, "You feeling better, Lu-ya?"

"Yes," Luffy says softly, the door opening a crack as he looks at him, the suds from his hair falling in clumps at his feet. "I'm still hungry Torao."

"That's nothing new, you nauseous?" Law asks, grabbing the laundry basket into his arms when Luffy mutters a quiet yes. "Soup is is then, I'll call Sanji-ya."

Law tucks his phone under his ear against his shoulder as it starts to ring, he scoops the bedding into the basket before carrying it into the laundry room.

"What do you want Law, I'm busy, the old man is gonna get on my case for stepping out for a smoke break," Sanji's voice greets, Law can almost smell the cigarette smoke through the phone. "How's the invalid?"

"Whining as usual," Law mutters, setting the basket down so he can open the washing machine, Sanji chuckles on the other end of the phone. "He has a high fever, mucus pouring out of his nose, and he's nauseous, but of course none of that is stopping his insatiable appetite."

"Of course it hasn't," Sanji mutters around his cigarette as Law stuffs the entire contents of the basket into the machine, shutting the door and grabbing the washing liquid. "Let me guess, you need Sanji's special sick soup delivered and sealed by this evening?"

"No I need a five course meal to feed ten people," Law sasses, smiling at the bark of laughter Sanji gives. He shuts the tray and starts the machine before turning to leave the room, "Make me enough to last a week, hopefully he'll be better by then otherwise everyone will have to take shifts with him."

"Let's hope he gets better fast then," Sanji says, the sound of blowing air tickling Law's eardrum as he takes a hold of his phone. "I'll have the mosshead bring it over when I'm finished, since he's got nothing better to do today."

Law pauses in the hallway, "Isn't he at his sister's wedding?"

"It'll be ready by the time he heads here," Sanji dismisses before hanging up the phone. Law shakes his head, stuffing his phone back into his pocket before opening the linen closet to pull out the first set of blankets, sheets, and pillows to start building the fort in the living room.

"Lu-ya, are you alright?" Law calls as he leans his head into the bedroom, the door to the bathroom wide open and the steam slowly dissipating as the shower is turned off.

Luffy's wet head pokes out from the opening shower door, "I'm okay, Torao, the shower helped."

Law smiles, "I told you so, the towels are on the counter, I'm going to the living room. Don't you dare sit on the bed, Lu-ya, I just pulled the sheets off."

Law lays his pile down on the couch before going over to the coffee table and picking up the remote bowl, magazines and comic books, and last night's empty tea mugs to take them to the kitchen. He moves the coffee table to the other end of the room before pushing the couches closer together.

He spreads a sheet across all the couches, tying the corners to the back with some random hair ties that Robin and Nami have left behind in their apartment. He puts one more sheet, untied, across the couches before crawling underneath and spreading the blankets across the floor and pillows against the couch sides.

"Torao, you in there?" Luffy's nasally voice calls softly, Law pokes his head out from under the sheet to see his husband standing in the doorway in his bright yellow hoodie.

"I didn't give you that," Law mutters, crawling out from the fort and standing to his feet. "How are you feeling now, Lu-ya?"

"Worse," Luffy sniffs, crossing his arms over his chest as a shiver runs down his body. "I wish I could have stayed in the shower."

"The hot water clears the sinuses and relaxes the muscles, but you hate it when your fingers get all pruney," Law teases, placing the back of his hand against his forehead. "I'll take your temperature later but I think your fever has done down. Sanji-ya is going to bring the food by later, you want to lay down? I was just gonna grab some more blankets."

"I wanna lay down, Torao," Luffy says softly, leaning into the hand on his forehead. "I'm tired."

"Come on then, let's lay down," Law says, dropping his hand down onto Luffy's shoulder and guiding him to the fort. "You need to start resting now, I'll grab the big fluffy blanket and then we'll start watching our show."

"Can you grab Sunny please, Torao?" Luffy whispers, laying down across the nest of blankets and pillows.

Law smiles, nodding his head as he stands to his feet, "I'll get her, baby."

Law goes to the linen closet first, grabbing their fluffiest blanket from the top shelf, then heads to their bedroom to the shelf holding the three stuffed animals. Merry, a white ram, Tang, a yellow penguin, and Sunny the orange and brown lion, which Law grabs and tucks under his arm. They were all gifts from their friends, anniversary gifts of the day that everyone claimed they knew that Luffy and Law were "it" for each other. Everyone got a turn each year to choose what gift to given them and Robin always got them a stuffed animal when it was her turn. They had become comfort toys for when they were sick and Luffy always liked to take turns with them.

Law looks around the room once more, looking for anything else they might need for the next couple of hours. His eyes linger on the book he was ready last night but he turns and leaves it on his nightstand, he'll have plenty of time for reading later. He grabs the thermometer off the top of the dresser before heading back into the living room.

"Here you go, Lu-ya," Law says, handing over the stuffed lion and spreading the blanket over his legs, Luffy wraps his arms around Sunny as Law places the thermometer into his mouth.

Law waits for the beep before taking it out and looking at the digital numbers, 100.6, lower than this morning but still a high fever.

"How am I looking, Doctor?" Luffy asks, smiling his thousand watt smile as Law crawls next to him.

"You'll live," Law states evenly, picking up the remote and turning the TV on as Luffy lays his head down against his shoulder. "Lots of rest and fluids, you're fever is already going down and some of Sanji-ya's soup will do the rest."

Luffy hums in agreement, tucking his chin down against Sunny's mane as Law flicks to the right streaming service with their show, "I love Sanji's food, it's the best."

"It is that," Law agrees, setting the remote to the side as the start of the show rolls across the screen.

"Thank you for taking care of me," Luffy whispers, his voice slow and sleepy as he leans heavily against Law's side.

Law leans over and places kiss against his hot forehead, "You're my husband, it's my job."

Luffy's face twitches into a smile, "I love you, Torao."

"I love you, baby, sleep. I'll change the show so you don't miss anything," Law whispers, pulling the blanket further up to Luffy's shoulders as he starts to snore against him.

Law only hopes that whatever Luffy caught, he doesn't get it next.

Notes:

Law does end up getting sick and he's a bigger baby than Luffy about it, Luffy still takes good care of him though.
