Summary
Shane already knows what is coming for him, but he still hesitates when he hears the heavy-handed knock on his door. Not that Ilya can do anything to hurt him. The idea is laughable. But even after all his years of living, he never likes to disappoint. It may be a fault, but he feels it nonetheless. Knowing that he can't wait forever, he steels himself for the worst and opens the door.
If his heart still beat, it would sink at the sight of Ilya's infuriated expression.
"I don't need to hear it," Shane says curtly, stepping aside to let him in.
He knows how terrible he looks, from the dark shadows beneath his eyes to the paler than normal complexion of his skin. Even his lips are drained of color, and there's a dullness in his eyes that he's noticed for days now. He waited too long. He knows that.
But he has his reasons.
