Yuna Hollander was cool under pressure, that's what everyone says at least. She is widely known as a momager, and that's because she does not play when it comes to her son. So, when she receives a call from a hospital in Boston, her cool as a cucumber mask begins to crack.
David Hollander loves his family. His wife Yuna is the best thing to ever happen to him besides the birth of their son, Shane. David knows that his wife is a doer. So, when she receives a call that their child is in the hospital and there is no immediate action she can take other than booking them flights, he knows he's going to have to be her anchor.
The plane ride from Ottawa to Boston is tense to say the least. David is trying to keep Yuna calm but her restless energy is rubbing off on him. Yuna's leg is bouncing, David puts a gentle hand on her knee and gives it what he hopes is a comforting squeeze.
It's the not knowing that raises their hackles the most. All the hospital could tell them was that he was in an accident and as of the phone call he was in a stable condition. What was he even still doing in Boston? As far as Yuna and David knew the rest of the Metros had already flown home after getting knocked out of the playoffs by the Raiders.
After landing in Boston they immediately get a cab from the airport to the hospital where Shane had been admitted. When they make it to the correct floor they are greeted by a kind looking nurse who clearly recognised them.
"Mr and Mrs Hollander." She greets holding out her hand. Yuna and David both shaking her hand.
Yuna doing what she does best takes control of the situation. "Hello, what can you tell us about our son?" David smiles apologetically for his wife's intensity right off the bat. Yuna Hollander was nothing if not intimidating.
"Shane has a concussion, a fractured collarbone and a couple of bruised ribs." She says calmly, clearly used to worse behaviour from patient's families. "He's going to be fine. He'll be sore for a while but he's definitely going to make a full recovery."
The tension that had held the Hollander's shoulders finally loosened its grip. "Oh, thank goodness." Yuna breathes. "Thank you."
"Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to disclose the condition of the other person brought in with Shane." The nurse says.
David and Yuna quickly meet each other's eye. "He was brought in with someone else? Is that the person who hit him?" David asks.
"No sir. He was with Shane when the accident occurred. The police took their statements when they first arrived and the perpetrators are now in custody."
"Perpetrators, plural?" Yuna's brow is furrowed.
"I am not sure that I am allowed to discuss the rest of the case with you since it’s ongoing. You will have to talk to your son and the police." The nurse explains gently. "There are officers posted outside his room just as a precaution. Follow me so I can let you in without you having to show your I.D."
They follow her down the hallway, gripping each other's hand. After speaking to the nurse they are way more confused than they were before. This was supposed to be a car accident, it didn’t seem like that was the whole story anymore.
The nurse shoos the cop off uttering, "Parents," to them as an explanation.
"I'll be right out here be the nurse's station of you need anything." She gently touches, Yuna's hand comfortingly.
"Thank you again." David says.
Yuna and David brace themselves for seeing their son hurt. No matter how many times Shane has been injured it never got easier.
"Mom and Dad!" Shane cheers when they enter closing the door behind them. They have clearly got him on some good medication.
"Shane, baby." Yuna coos, "How are you?"
"Can't move my arm." He pouts at his arm that's in a sling.
David has to hold back a chuckle at the petulant look on his kid's face. It’s an expression he hadn’t seen since Shane was little. "It's because you hurt it, bud." He says, joining Yuna at his bedside.
"I didn't hurt it, someone else did." He says, alarming his parents. "You're here now though so it's okay. I could use the better company."
They jump at the sound of a raspberry being blown by someone behind the curtain on the other side of the room. They had been so concentrated on Shane that they hadn’t noticed someone else was in the room.
"Sshh," Shane brings his finger to his lips with his good arm.
"Do not shush me." The curtain swings open to reveal a dishevelled Ilya Rozanov.
"Rozanov?" Yuna asks, looking between the two hockey players.
"Yes, Ilya." Shane sighs. "But it's a secret."
"I don't recall him getting hurt during the game." David observes looking to his wife.
"Neither do I." And if anyone knew when someone is injured on the ice, it's his wife.
"Нет, I played great game. Unlike some people." He smirks.
"Hey!" Shane exclaims. "You're out of the playoffs now as well." Shane smirks, gesturing at the other man’s injuries. Ilya childishly pokes his tongue out in response.
"Sweetheart, we can get you a private room. I don't know why they would put you in a room with Rozanov in the first place." Yuna soothes.
"No," Shane whines. "He's with me."
"He's with you?" David is even more confused.
"Yes, he came to the hospital with me."
Yuna and David take a minute to process what that means. Rozanov was the other person brought in with their son. Their son was willingly in a vehicle with Ilya Rozanov.
"Don't tell. It is secret." Ilya says solemnly.
"What were you two doing?" Yuna needs to know all the information available.
"We were going to Ilya's house." That was the second time Shane had used the other man’s first name. When had Rozanov become Ilya to him? "I was really looking forward to having time alone together. Mom, can you ask them to move Ilya closer? He's so far away." He laments, reaching his uninjured arm out towards the Russian.
Yuna is stunned for a second but stands and leaves, returning with a nurse that moves Ilya's bed and equipment next to her son.
"Yay!" Shane smiles, patting the other man’s arm.
"Mr Rozanov, do you want me to tell Mr and Mrs Hollander about your injuries? You didn't have any emergency contacts and you can't be discharged if you don't have someone to stay with."
"If they do not mind." Ilya says shyly. Yuna had never seen the Raiders' captain so small.
"Please mom." Shane begs, shooting her his best puppy dog eyes.
She looks to David who shrugs and nods. "We'd be happy to take him as well." Yuna hopes that she won't regret this later.
"Okay. So, Ilya also has a concussion and a few stitches above his eyebrow. He has a broken rib on his left side as well as few bruised ones. His shoulder was dislocated but we managed to get it back in place without surgical intervention." The nurse reels off. "He also has mild rope burn on both wrists."
"Rope burns?" Yuna exclaims at the same time that David let's out a rather loud, "What?"
"From the rope." Shane supplies unhelpfully.
"What the hell happened?" Yuna asks the two young men.
"I'll leave you to it then." The nurse exits briskly.
"We were driving. Ilya was driving the nice car I had told him to buy because he has so many sports cars but none of them are practical."
"New car is boring but reliable." Ilya adds.
"I noticed that there was a car that had been following us for a while and then they speed up and try to run us off the road."
"Oh my god." Yuna gasps.
"They were unsuccessful but they kept following so I called the police. I was able to give them a roundabout location before we were driven off the road and hit a tree." Shane must be on a lot of medication because he recounts these events with an uncharacteristic amount of nonchalance. "The impact bruised my ribs and probably Ilya's."
"Jesus." David whispers under his breath.
"Next thing I know I'm getting yanked out of the car. This guy had a crowbar and hit me, my knees are a little sore from hitting the ground."
"I see this and am not happy. I try to punch guy but another one appears." Ilya jumps in. "He grabs my arms and crowbar guy hit my ribs. Other guy ties my hands behind my back. He is not pleased with me. He says I betray Boston by signing with Ottawa for next season. Says I lose him a lot of money. Shane tries to speak up but they punch him in face." Ilya frowns deeply.
"I struggle against rope. No one hits Shane. It burns. I get pulled up during struggle and my arm goes pop. I have dislocated it before so it is already not best. I shake off man and headbutt crowbar guy as hard as I can. His crowbar cut me when he brings his hand to his nose that is now broken." Ilya says proudly.
"I heard it crunch." Shane supplies, his own nose scrunching up just thinking about it.
"I say choice words in Russian. Rope man picks up crowbar and is going to hit me but police show up just in time. They say to drop weapons, I drop to ground because I am tired. Feel like baby that lifts car to save mother."
"Ilya, it's a mother lifting a car to save a baby. Babies can not lift cars." Shane rolls his eyes.
"Mother can not lift car either. It is stupid. Anyway, people get arrested we get to ride in ambulance and come here."
Yuna and David are shocked. They'll have to get a more in-depth retelling of events when both boys were not high as a kite, but for now they're speechless.
"Police found more rope in their car and a bag. They think that they were going to kidnap Ilya and rough him up but the plan got out of hand because I was there and they hadn't planned for another person." Shane nods.
"Because Rozanov is moving to Ottawa?" Yuna runs a shaky hand through her hair.
"Hockey fans can be… a lot." Ilya says. "I am just sorry that Shane was there and got hurt."
"Sounds like if Shane was not their you would have been kidnapped." David leans heavily against a wall.
"Yes, but Shane would be safe." Ilya says like him being kidnapped was a better situation.
"Well, I'm happy I was there. I do not want my boyfriend to be kidnapped." Shane declares.
David and Yuna both hold their breath. It doesn't seem like Shane has realised what he'd said. They had suspected Shane might be gay, but they didn't expect him to have a whole boyfriend. That boyfriend being Ilya Rozanov somehow and they didn't think that they'd find out after an attempted kidnapping with them both heavily medicated.
Ilya did not miss this slip, his eyes wide. "Shane."
"What?" Their son's face scrunches up as he goes back through what he said. "Oh, fuck," he breathes. Shane's breathing immediately changes. "Oh fuck," He repeats.
"Shane." Yuna places a tentative hand on his knee. "It's okay."
"I really tried not to be but I just can't help it. I'm sorry."
"Oh no. Sweetheart, no." Yuna coos. "You never have to apologise for this. Please forgive us. We're sorry if we ever did anything to make you feel like you couldn't tell us."
"I forgive you guys." Shane sniffles as both his parents carefully wrap him up in his arms. "Meet my boyfriend Ilya, I guess."
Yuna and David chuckle tearfully. "Hi, Ilya. It's nice to meet you even if these are the best circumstances." David holds out a hand that Ilya carefully takes. Yuna goes a step further and pulls the Russian into her arms.
"Thank you for taking care of my son." She whispers, "I'm happy that he's had you." Ilya melts into her hold.
"How long have you had him?" David asks, turning to Shane.
"Uh, rookie season."
"Rookie season?" Both parents reply.
"No, not true." Ilya says. "Was the summer before."
"Not helping." Shane replies.
"You've been dating this whole time?" Yuna asks, looking between them.
"No." Shane quickly denies at the same time that Ilya shakes his head and says, "Нет."
"So, your were just?" David eyes them both.
"Lovers." Ilya supplies taking Shane's hand.
"No, Ilya. That's gross." Shane sighs but it's awfully fond.
"It got more serious when my father died." Ilya explains, "He was sick a long time. After he died I no longer had anything tying me there. My Mama died when I was young and I have brother but he is too much like our father. Cruel."
"It's not safe for Ilya to be himself there." Shane is looking at his boyfriend with so much love.
"Wait, is this why you're being traded to Ottawa?" David asks Ilya.
"Is part of reason. Canadian passport is also nice." Ilya jokes before turning serious. "It's so hard being in different countries all the time. We're starting foundation to give public a reason for us being friends."
"A foundation." David can see his wife's eyes light up. This is her place of expertise.
"We're thinking of doing hockey camps for kids during the summer. The money we raise will go to different mental health charities. The story being that we both were passionate about this issue and we bonded over starting the charity. "Shane says. "We are both actually invested, though. It's not just for show."
"That's a beautiful idea." Yuna smiles, "Do you have a name in mind?"
"The Irina Foundation." Shane squeezes Ilya's hand. Ilya smiles at him sadly.
"Is my mother's name. She was very sad. I don’t want anyone to think she was weak. She was strongest person I know." Ilya sniffles. "She was so beautiful, but my father was so hard on her."
"Oh, sweetheart." Yuna gets the implication right away and hugs himself again. "We don’t think she was weak. She must have been a wonderful person if she raised you."
"You are very kind, Mrs Hollander." Ilya mumbles into her shoulder.
"Yuna, please." She cups his face.
"David." David nods.
"Yuna and David." Ilya smiles at them both, he turns to Shane. "I am favourite son already."
"You are not their favourite son." Shane exclaims. Ilya just smiles smugly, settling back in his hospital bed.
Yuna and David locked eyes. They got it now. They were going to have a lot more conversations. Also legal proceedings because they were assaulted and almost kidnapped, which is a whole other discussion. They were ready to support both these young men any way they could.
