Work Text:
Turmoil had rolled through the ED. Pile up on the highway. 30 victims at least. Now at the tail end of it, things run down. The last trauma cases get send up to the OR. Lower priority cases stitched, cleaned and bandaged.
Abbot pulled off his gown and gloves. Smoothly scooping disinfectant foam into his hands. His eyes searched the room. For Robby. He had lost him going towards the end. Somebody moped up the blood spills.
"Where's Robby?" Abbot threw a questioning look towards Dana at the head nurses station. "Ehm. I dont know. Haven't seen him in a while." She added distracted with seeming like thousands of forms.
Abbot pulled up his nose. He didn't like his gut feeling. Robby disappearing around choas. When the adrenaline wore off and the shock hit.
"I'll look for him, tell him when you see him." He tapped his palm on the surface to mark his point. Concerned eyes flicked to Abbot. "I will."
The bay was still hectic. Ambulances strolling in and out. Peopel running left and right. Bikes parked shut. Cars honking. In this job you learned to overlook the choas, what youre searching for will stand out.
But no Micheal Robinavitch.
A distressed looking Mel was glued back faced to the wall. Chest heaving. "You alright Dr. King?" He called over. Her eyes clicked towards him. She nodded frantically. "Im fine." She pressed out.
He had stepped closer. Carefully, like a deer or cattle. "You sure. Isn't the bay too stressful?" "No im alright." She had her phone pressed to her side. "Scream if you shouldn't be." He turned on his heels.
Daunting, the roof it was. The elevator peeped knowingly. Way too slow it shuffled its way upward. The last few steps he sprinted up and ripped the heavy metal door open. Fresh and cold dawn air hit him.
The sky over Pittsburgh was painted majesticly yellow with deep reds marking the edge of the horizon. Soft pink and cyan mixed at the edges to blue. He had swung open the door quite dramatically.
A startled Robby jerked around. "Fucking hell Jack!" After identifying the intruder, he leaned back over the railing again. "Not cool Brother. To disspear just like that." Abbot sounded mad. He had been worried more than he realised.
Robby was calm. His shoulder relaxed, comfortable leaning on the railing, his words placid and unhurried. "Im just watching the sunset."
Abbot joined him. Robby nudged his shoulder. "Worried about me?" He hung his head. "Fucking hell Robby. Of course Iam." Robbys chuckle was genuine and warm. Like it had been for a few weeks now.
What had changed? Abbot blackmailed him to go to therapy. So he did. Had it worked this well already? Noone really quite knew. Not even Abbot.
The changes in Robbys demenear and relaxed status where visible by every person of staff. There were betting pools for what drugs he had taken.
But Abbot didnt trust this at all. Maybe they were good changes, maybe they were bad changes. Calm before the storm and all. He couldn't tell yet. And he didnt want to miss the point when its too late.
"You alright?" He asked sincerely. "Iam Jack really." Robby nudged his ellbow. He lowered his head, eying him carefully. "Are you okay brother?" Abbot laught at that. He couldn't quite tell why. The laugh died in his troat after a moment. Robbys question was real.
"No." He finally said, "Im not." His muscles tensed up. "Im not alright Robby. I'm fucking worried about you." Robbys expression got even more questioning.
"Yeah that whole," Abbot searched for the right word, "mood change. I can't get behind it." He eyed him carefully, deep concern in his gaze. This time it was Robbys turn to grin and laugh.
"Whats so funny?" He couldnt answer through his chuckle. It took a moment to get a grip. "Sorry man." He cleared his troat. "Im happy. Abbot. Im happy."
Abbot looked really confuesed. "Happy?" "Happy." "What drugs are you on?"
Robby raised his eyebrows. "None." "None. What has that therapist done to you?" Abbot eyed him carefully, like he would find the answeres in his expression.
The muscles around Robbys eyes relaxed even more. "Im happy. Jack." "Seriosuly what drugs?" "No fucking drugs man. I swear. Test me if you dont believe me!" Abbot crunched his nose.
Robby looked tense again. But not like he didnt want to talk about it like usually. He was confuesed. "Then. Why?"
Robbys eyes snapped to his, something deep inside trying to analyse or decide something. He chuckled, shaking his head for a second before returning to Abbot. "Why. Because I fucking love you Jack Abbot." He pressed out.
Abbots brain came to a halt. And what a halt. Like a train tried to stop. Screeting and rattling. And then silence. Utter silence. He lowered his head, eyes not leaving Robbys. "Are you sure you want to say this?"
Robby shook his head in disbelieve. "Am I sure if I want to say this? Fucking hell Abbot." "What." He followed Robbys eyes like a green gimble. "Seriously what drugs? Or is it hypnosis?"
"Jesus. You make this difficult." He tipped his head to the first signs of stars. Fists balled around the railing. "I love you too." Abbot spoke casual. Robby snapped to him. A smile on the side of his lips but pure confusion in his eyes.
"You idot. I loved you since the first shift we worked." He paused, not leaving Robbys eyes. Who was speechless. Sort of. Jack grinned. "What. It took you 20 years." "Actually it was the therapist." Robby stated dry.
"She made you realise this?" "Man, she told me. First session." Abbot laughed with him. The tension between them subsided.
They bumped shoulders. "What now?" Abbot asked, making him take the lead. Big brown deer eyes faced him.
And before Abbot could think a second thought, Robby had grapped his neck and pulled him into a kiss. The akward bumb made Jack grin into it. But Robby was calm. Again. He had waited his turn. Not given up on it yet.
"Sorry I wanted to do that since I realised." Robby said calmly when they parted. "Mmh. And what am I supposed to say. 20 years and so on." Jack grinned slyly and so did Robby.
This time it was Abbot who pulled him in. Depp and longing. Enjoying every second of it. Robby melted like putty into him.
And thats how they kissed infront of the sunset for the very first time. Very comical. But noone cared even a second.
