Work Text:

It was another cold night, like the rest, as a phantom of a girl inside of a wolf body stalked its next prey. The fog of the hunt clouded who she once was and left a beast who kills anything to survive. Through the bush she used as cover was a male, 4 pronged deer. She watched his every move as it looked around cautiously and continued to eat the berries off the bush.

MoSt eaT. MUst huNt.

She hasn’t eaten a meal as big as this one in a while. By which, a while she doesn’t know for sure. The days have been blending together. She desperately needed this kill to have energy for the next. Her stomach twisted and turned unforgivingly, drool pooling in her maw.

Ears back, legs up and ready, she made her move. In one swift moment, the deer's eyes met hers and booked it. By an inch, she missed her lethal swipe.

No nO- thIs caN’t hApPen-

Without much thought, she chased it through the forest, thorns and uneven ground slowing her. She kept up pace until they were in an open field and some homes a good ways apart from each other.

She didn’t care about anyone or anything except this deer as her main course. Hunger and her wolfie needs gripped her being.

She felt like she was barely breathing but heard her pants of exhaustion. Her paws were numb with the cold of the north. She was gaining on him, muzzle just shy of a hair to sink her teeth into.

Then a shot rang out and she first felt something throw her off balance, almost toppling her over. Then the burning in her shoulder began to spread like fire through her body.

The next step she took was her last as her front leg that was hit failed her and made her eat the ground with a loud thump and a whimper of pain.

NEed to gEt up- neEd to Go- neEd to rUn!

In a haze, she saw the deer disappear. The cold wind bit her fur as she forced her whimpering to become growls to intimidate, but came out like a desperate dog being beaten by its owner.

The pain pinned her in place as she tried getting up. CAn’T… CaN’t geT uP…

Through her peripherals, she saw blood spilling from her front shoulder. It wasn’t healing. Silver… It wasn’t healing like it should with a regualr bullet. And the panic was eating her up and swallowing her whole.

MOVE- PLEASE MOVE! Enid screamed in the back of her mind.

She heard footsteps approaching her. She growled and moved her head to her attacker. She has been hunted by many for a while now, both animal and man. She always manages to be on top. But not this time.

The human figure loomed over her, hearing it laugh.

“Oi haha! Finally caught up to you. Mighty big you are, aye mate?” The gun he discharged at her rested over his shoulder, though not for long as he took it in hand and reloaded it. She didn’t see many details apart from the wolf skinned winter coat and short dark hair with haze eyes.

“Big and a pretty coat. Nothing personal but you've been terrorizing these parts too long I hear. You have a prize over your dead body. And a feral werewolf as yourself needs to be put down.”

He cocked it and started to aim at her head. Her wolf screamed, struggling to move.

Can’t die. Can’t die. Weak Child.

“Don’t make this harder on yourself mate. Close your eyes. It’ll be over soon.” His voice dropped to be more sincere in a weird way, like he didn’t want to do this despite what he said just seconds earlier. She caught his eyes and stared into his soul.

“It’s for the best…” He took a breath. “Your family sends their regards, Enid.”

Her eyes widened as bursts of memories of her childhood, her family, mom and dad, brothers, classmates, friends, her roommate.

‘If I wolfed out and couldn’t you know… change back. Would you come and find me?’ The bottom part of a blurred out face softened before her eyes through the lupin cage.

‘I have no problem hunting you down.’ She felt herself smile and the other….

Dark long braided hair and dark eyes looked up at her in astonishment, face dusted in dirt. A stare so long it was intoxicating. But you made a choice and the wolf consumed you, her face becoming a ghost. You feel her eyes watch you as you run.

Running was always the best thing. Running away from her family after an argument. Running away from what bothers her and changing the subject. Running from what she fears and doesn’t understand. Running from lovers that turned into ex lovers. Running from her whole life… She can’t run anymore.

Her rib bones were visible through her pelt. Her fur was soaked in dirt, mud, snow, and dried blood. Her eyes once a nice blue, now completely yellow and wild.

Can’t win this time. She closed her eyes and went limp, accepting her fate.

“Good girl.” There was a shot that rang out, but what came after wasn’t her end. She heard a yelp and thump, then the sound of a gun barrel hitting something with a ‘oof’ following.

She kept her eyes squeezed closed, thinking it was another hunter wanting to take the prize from this hunter.

Panting was heard and then a name. “Enid-“

Enid. She opened her eyes and saw heaven itself.

Wednesday? She fell to her knees and took the Alfa’s paw in her small hands. “Thing, get Fester now! Enid, it’s okay. Breathe. I found you.”

She heard her own shallow breaths, vision blurring that beautiful face of a semi friendly face. How cruel. She could stare at her all day if she wasn’t dieing. The pain was immense.

She let out a small huff, eyes heavy.

“Don’t you dare- Enid! If you don’t stay awake I’ll-

Despite Wednesday’s wishes, Enid fell away from the waking world and into a dark slumber.

Wednesday glared at the wolf sightings in the dim light of her tent. Why won’t you stay in one place, you dumb wolf.

‘Phantom wolf spotted in Canada borders’

‘Phantom wolf seen in Frelighsburg, shop owner injured’

‘Phantom wolf has caused havoc in Bedford, local werewolf hunters massacred.’

‘Phantom wolf is spotted near Farnham wooded areas! Stay vigilant.’

She groaned and stood, exiting her tent. Thing silently followed her.

Without much effort, she walked past Fester, who was chopping wood and then zapping it as target practice.

“Going out.” She let out without stopping.

“Alright my favorite niece! Don’t let the black bears bite!” He giggled.

She didn’t say anything as she pushed through the forest and into open land with a few homes here and there. Thing caught up to her and ran ahead to gain her attention. She stopped and looked down with a straight face. “What.”

‘You should sleep Wednesday. You can’t find her like this.’

She scoffed and kept going. “Results aren’t found by sleeping. She was last seen here. Clues are about.”

Thing seemed to give up almost immediately and jumped and climbed to her shoulder.

‘Fine.’ He definitely wanted to say more but didn’t. He knew better than to get between her and finding Enid. They had this argument many times and it usually ended with her passing out to get a lick of some sleep. It wasn’t healthy. She knew it wasn’t. But time was her friend and enemy. Enid could be anywhere, already dead or alive all alone. Her visions haven’t been too helpful with this endeavore either.

I don’t break promises.

After a while of looking and staring bullets into any sign of life, she grew exhausted and propped herself up against a lone tree.

“There is nothing here.” The ever looming fear of failure and wellbeing of her friend was a heavy burden. She still didn’t understand why Enid would make such an idiotic decision to save her. It wasn’t the plan of her departing but her death would be a favorable outcome compared to this. She knows devastation follows her wake. She spent the whole last semester just trying to keep Enid alive after all.

Thing jumped off of her, now in front of her. ‘You can barely walk straight. Get some sleep. I’ll keep watch.’

Wednesday glared at him. “I’m just taking a break. Not a cat nap.”

Thing practically sighed in frustration, signing almost too quickly for her to understand.

‘You need more than a cat nap! You've been getting one hour of sleep everyday and you have fainted multiple times! If you keep this up, when you find her, you won’t be able to help her or chase her or do anything! Enid would want you to take care of yourself Wednesday. Your family wants you to take care of yourself.’

“Don’t bring Enid or my family into this argument. They aren’t here. You don’t need to follow me everywhere. If you don’t like my methods then find another relative to bother!” She almost spat out and stood up on worn out legs. “You know I can take care of myself.”

As if the universe was laughing at her naivety, she went off balance and righted herself on the tree bark.

Thing just stared at her, saying ‘are you sure about that?’ in his stance.

Before she could retort, she heard a gun shot. Wednesday immediately saw a man from a house porch carry his gun on his shoulder as he approached what he just shot a ways away. She can respect a good marksman shot at that kind of distance but the target was yet to be known.

“Let’s go.” She told Thing, he jumped back on her shoulder and they followed the man. She was a safe distance away from hearing him a bit but she was too busy looking at the fallen wolf. A big dirty blonde werewolf.

“Thing…” He heard the fear in her voice and immediately scurried to the scene. Wednesday tried to follow as silently as she could but her body was betraying her. Another laugh for the universe.

No… No not Enid-

She heard the man speak again. “Good girl.” Nonononono please don’t!

Wednesday watched as he pressed the trigger, Thing jumping up and pointing the shot to the sky. The lethal bullet missed. Wednesday forced her legs to corporate as adrenaline took her. Thing punched him in the face and took his gun, knocking him in the head with it and going unconscious.

Once she was finally there, her heart dropped at the sight of her. Adrenaline was pumping in her ears as she told Thing to get Fester.

She yelled her name, holding her wolf’s head in her hands. Her eyes were drooping, breathing shallowing out. They made eye contact and she let out a huff. Yellow eyes turning more dark blue and trembling.

“Don’t you dare- Enid! If you don’t stay awake I’ll personally resurrect you and torture you until I kill you myself!”

Enid’s eyes rolled back and body was now completely limp.

“Enid! You can’t leave me like this again-“ She set down her head and assessed where she was shot. The front right shoulder. She got her flashlight out and assessed the bloody mess of the wound.

A silver bullet was still in there. If not taken out soon, she would die of its poisoning to werewolves.

Without wasting a single moment, no matter how unsterilized the environment is, she plunged her finger in the wound and worked the bullet out. If she was awake, she would scream and squirm. But she was out cold, lucky to not experience such unimaginable pain.

Once she got it out, she took her scarf and put pressure on it. She then took her jacket off to keep the wolf warm.

Thing and Fester arrived. “Holy smokes! I see you found something better than a bear!” He joked and got his canteen of water and wetted his scarf. He handed it out and Wednesday quickly washed the wound. Thing came with gauze and helped wrap it. She put more pressure on the wound but Wednesday noticed her heart was beating dangerously slow, still bleeding out.

“Roll her on her back.” They immediately move her and watch her breaths and she keeps pressure. “Call mother. Now.”

“Aye aye!” Fester pulled out his burner.

They were running thin on time. They managed to order a private plane with healthcare outcasts. She coded twice already, one before the plane and Fester jump started her heart. The second wired up to machines that zapped her back once more. It was the most stressful and torturous thing the raven has faced besides the time Thing almost died to Thornhills back stab. She felt so useless.

By the time they get to New Jersey and have the emergency room ready, Wednesday feels the lack of sleep hit her. Of course she refuses to leave Enid’s side until they are in the operating room. It was a big risk to take the bullet out in the moment but it would be a bigger risk to leave it in a werewolf.

She sat and waited for hours on the outside of the glass, watching the family doctors work. Anything Thing or Fester said to her was ignored.

Soon however, her limit was passed and eventually passed out in the chair unwillingly.

Beeping first reached her ears, mind in a fog and disoriented. She wasn’t in the forest anymore, or the biting cold for that matter. Her wolf instincts kicked in immediately, taking the wheel as always.

She wildly ripped all IVs stuck to her and pried the oxygen mask off in a frenzy. She was in a white hospital room but was made to contain as well. She didn’t care that she trashed the whole room or made her injuries stitches pop out and bleed. Her howls and growling made a certain raven bolt up awake.

She was frenzied and panicked for a while, unable to take the reins from her wolf until she heard her.

“Enid! Enid listen to me right this instant!”

Her wolf swiveled and ran to be up against the window and clawed at where the raven girl was.

“I know you are in there Enid. Do not hide from me. You have been gone long enough mi lobo. You don’t need to fight anymore.”

Her wolf was confused by that and put her snout against the glass to get a good look at this girl speaking to her. “I made a promise to you, remember Enid? We are pack, you said that. And I have been hunting you down since you ran after saving me.”

The wolf only stares back for a moment, then continues to try breaking the glass. Her wolf needed to get to her, and Enid agreed. I needed to get out. Special girl. Mine. No one else. The girl groaned.

“Enid you are stronger than this. Don’t make me come in there.”

Her wolf instantly stopped and put her head against the glass. She could only howl until she started to hit the door handle.

“Enid no! What are you-“ She broke the handle off and used her body to force the door. It eventually gave way and the wolf was on her in a second. She pinned the raven to the ground and sniffed her all over.

WEdneSdAy. It’s Wednesday- Oh no it’s Wednesday- Oh yEs iT’s WeDneSdaY!

Enid watched in horror as her wolf pinned her down and licked her hair until she was at her neck.

“Enid, what are you doing?” Wednesday used her leg to push her stomach away a bit. “If you aren’t out to kill me, what are you trying to-”

Enid grabbed control for a second and got off of her, her wolf screaming indispleasure.

“Enid?”

Enid held herself there, staring at the ground to avoid the temptation that Wednesday was oh so unaware of.

“Why did you stop?” Wednesday admits she didn’t take the necessary time to understand the world of werewolves. She just felt uncomfortable since she started dating Ajax around the time they met. It felt like forbidden knowledge to know werewolf puberty and mate rituals. She just knew the basic knowledge.

It was an internal battle in the wolf's head. To be completely honest, she has been hiding her love for the raven since the Rave’N Dance. At first, denail held her to stay with Ajax. Her mom didn’t exactly approve of him since he wasn’t a werewolf, hence part of the reason she didn’t keep touch with him during the break after Crackstone. The second reason was that her wolf wasn’t approving of him, making her claws grow out when he got too touchy. The third reason was her inner crisis screaming at her from all sides that she loved Wednesday. She kept thinking about the raven constantly but had no means of communication with her. She wasn’t ready to break up with Ajax but at the same time, needed another destraction.

Her mom pushed her to be with Bruno and she went with it to keep her mind off Ajax and Wednesday. A plus was to apess her mom of suspicion that she was in love with a girl that wasn’t even a werewolf. Her mom would have her head if she knew. Her relationship bettered with her family when she was with Bruno, but it at the same time, she was burrying her true self.

It worked a little while, until the kisses and touch they shared made her feel a sense of dread, all while Wednesday was galaventing with Agnes. It felt like Xavier and Tyler all over again.

Jealousy had a death grip on her. Then the body swap and her Alfa status happened and Enid knew her true feelings. Especially after Bruno loved another thanks to Wednesday break up with him for her. But Wednesday being herself, there was no way it was mutual. She grinned and beared it, letting it slip that the raven was her pack in a moment of vulnerability. Because she was scared of being alone and forgotten.

Then it happened. The day she sacrificed her humanity to save the girl she loved deep inside. They were ment to be lone wolves, they were meant to hate each other's differences. They were ment to never be friends. But yet they were so dynamic and complemented each other so well that it just made sense to them.

Now her wolf wanted to imprint Wednesday as her mate to seal their relationship that the raven didn’t consent to. How fucked up is that?

Without thinking, she turned without making eye contact and ran. Running is all she is good at now after all. She heard Wednesday yell for her in a fury and her wolf whimpered in sorrow in the back seat. Tears filled her vision in this labrinth of walls. The pain from moving too swiftly hurt her wound, making it easy for Wednesday to catch up in her confused rage.

“Enid Sinclair lobo estúpido! Do not run from me again!”

She became disoriented from all things considered. She panted heavily and the pain caught up with her quickly. She fell to the floor and squeezed her eyes shut, covering them with her paws as she whined aloud.

“Enid…” Wednesday whispered next to her, feeling her cold hands touch her paws. Enid pulled them more into her face as Wednesday tried to pull them away to see her eyes. “Hiding won’t help anything mi amor.” The wolf only curled into herself.

“Something is troubling you. But as you are, I can’t understand you.” Wednesday sighed and rubbed her thumb into her paw. “Why did you save me, Enid? Why did you run until you got deeper into trouble, you almost met your demise.” The wolf peeks her eye through her paw, seeing Wednesday almost look sad through the concern and frustration. Then in a blink of an eye, something dawned on the other girl. The thumb rubs stopped but she didn’t pull away.

“You know your fate is what you want it to be.” She touched her own abdomen. “I thought mine was sealed until I saw the premonition of your death, because of me. I refused it. I fought so hard to stop it because…”

She paused, seeing Enid's eyes looking at her through her paws.

“I’m… I’m not good at emotions but this attachment I have for you stalks me everywhere I am. Pierces through me like an arrow to the heart. I cannot bear to accept you losing to yourself when I…” She closed her eyes and took a breath. Enid’s paws fell away.

“I’ve grown to value and trust you, more than anyone else. I… As much as I despise to abmit, I love you, Enid.”

Enid was shocked with this information, frozen in place as Wednesday pulled a paw to her chest. This can’t be real right? There is no way…

It seemed the look she gave the raven spoke of her confusion. “Do not doubt the feelings I have revealed to you. It is no lie.” As if to get the point across, she gave a small kiss to the outside of her paw. What-

Her body suddenly cramped and bones cracked. She knew what was happening. It was said to be a myth, yet she was, full heartedly accepting the other girl's words. Of love and trust. Never in all her lifetime would she think Wednesday wanted someone, especially her, to be her mate.

The transformation was longer than usual, hurting similar to her first but the anatomy around the wound hurt the most with the bones shifting within her.

She was left out of breath when it was over, partially kneeing and laying on the cold ground on bare skin. Wednesday still had her hand, giving a grounding squeeze as a reminder she was here.

There was silence as Enid caught her breath, then just went limp as all her energy left, along with the senses her wolf grasped her with for all that time. Wednesday caught her forehead and gently layed it in her lap.

She willed her voice that hasn't been used since the day she left to speak.

After a few sputters and stutters failing on her lips, she managed to say one thing among all the rest.

“I-I… Love.. too.” With the energy zapped right out of her, she lulled to sleep despite the excitement that someone finally loved her as much as she did.

She could have sworn she felt her head being pet with an amused hum.

When she woke up again, she was back in the room she was in before. She now wore a black tank top and sweat pants, wires and IV’s in a few spots on her arms and belly. She blushed at the idea of someone dressing her while being knocked the fuck out.

Then she notices all the bruises and scratches with her pale and malnourished body. Not to mention she felt clammy and sweaty, mind foggy. She hadn’t felt this thin and sick before. It felt cold, hot, and uncomfortable.

She lifted her head and moved her eyes to find her new mate. She was to the side of her, leaning against the wall, asleep. She could see how dark her eye bags were, no doubt she lost sleep because of her.

Before she could feel guilty about herself, she heard a shift next to her, finding a dismembered hand jumping to her lap and his fingers moving with purpose. She barely understood what he was saying but she got a few.

“Enid! … … awake! We …. .. worried about …. How … … feeling? … you speak?”

She opened her mouth, her voice unfamiliar to her now. “H.. hey Thing… I…” Her mouth felt dry. “Water?”

Thing flinched at her voice but nodded at her request. He got off the bed and went out of the room before saying a quick ‘be right back.’

Enid smiled and turned to the still sleeping Wednesday. She is so beautiful… She longed to just go up to her and give her a kiss to wake her but her body currently felt heavy.

Thing came back with a glass of ice water, setting it down before speaking again, slower this time for Enid’s slow brain to comprehend.

‘Do you need help drinking it?’

Enid thought for a moment. “Let’s… find out.” She willed her hand to move, wiggling her fingers and then went to lift her arm. It felt so sore that she lost her breath and rested again. “Okay… yeah.”

Thing picked the glass with his thumb and pointer and balanced it as he used his ring and pinkie to crawl. He climbed up to her chest and slowly tinted it to her mouth. Luckily there was a straw to easily drink.

It felt like a god sent, having needed to drink river and pound water for a while. She did have a few bowls of dog water but that didn’t count…

Once she was done, she breathed a thanks. Thing put it on the bedside and started talking to her.

‘You feel hurt?”

“Heh.. very.” She let out a huff. “Better though.”

Thing was unconvinced but nodded. ‘You have been feverish for a few days, in and out of sleep since you changed back.’

“Oh…?” Enid didn’t recall but being shot by silver had to have given her an infection.

‘Wednesday hasn’t left this room to watch over you. Though, I guess it caught up to her.’

Enid smiled weakly, cheeks warming again. “She… didn’t need to… Do that.”

‘Well she did. Since you had been gone, she hasn’t slept much at all. She was obsessed to find you. Stubborn to do anything else.’

“Sounds like her…” Enid wanted to hold her hand, but she was too far.

Without a warning, Thing jumped off the bed and tugged Wednesday's pants. Her breath caught as the raven’ eyes snapped awake with a sharp inhale, looking down to find Thing talking to her. She was too focused on Wednesday's face to know what Thing was saying before their eyes met.

“Enid. Welcome back to the waking world.” She promptly stood up and came to her bed side. “How do you feel?”

All she could focus on were those piercing dark brown eyes, getting lost in them. The growing need to touch her and kiss her clouded her thoughts.

“Enid?” She shook her trance to find that Wednesday had put her head over her forehead.

“Hm…?” She said dumbly.

“Are you okay?” She furrowed in concern.

She blinked. “No! Uh… Yeah! I’m fine.” She looked away, embarrassed. “Sorry…”

“Do not apologize. I am sure Thing told you about your fever. Looks like it's not making you delirious anymore. You can be awfully clingy, you know…”

Enid flushed more and looked down. “Oh yeah… Sorry you had to deal with me like that.” She felt a sudden shame, being reminded of her youth. She would get sick a lot and her family just hated to deal with her. Reprimanding her for being weak and unable to transform. All because they would make her survive the night in a random forest. Rain, shine, or snow.

“Enid.” Wednesday took her chin and made her look at her eyes. “You are never a bother. You have survived yet another encounter from death and your body has gone through what it needs to get better.” She looked so certain in her words, but years with a family like hers made her doubt.

“Still… I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. Touch is something you hate. Plus you are practically allergic to me, because of the color…”

“You don’t make me uncomfortable, just overstimulated at times. As for my allergy, I take medication as much as I need to have it handled.”

“I…” Enid gulped and closed her eyes, then looked down at her arm as the raven's touch was shaken off. “Are you sure about this? About what you said about loving me? I get if you said that to bring my hum-”

Wednesday forced her chin to her once again, now nose to nose. Forehead to forehead. Enid blushed at being so close, smelling her scent of cedar wood on a rainy day. Her blue eyes of anxiety met confident and challenging dark brown eyes. “You doubt me again, Sinclair?”

Enid’s breath hitches and finds her own eyes going past her eyes, down her cheeks with her light frickles on pale skin, to her dark lips. ShE iS riGht thERe. Wednesday’s lips quirk up and Enid snaps back to her eyes.

“Your eyes turn yellow when you look at me sometimes, Enid.” She said matter of factly, glancing at the blonde's lips as well. “Go on then.”

Her wolf was screaming now. SHe Is ouRs sHe iS oUrS wHAt arE yOu wAitiNg fOr! She doesn’t know what will happen if she is ours! My family- DOn’t Be aN iDoT cLuB, wE aRe alFa. ShE waNts uS. DOn’t nEed to be aLonE nOw. SHe is PACK.

She is my pack… Enid squeezed her eyes shut, her lips on the others. Wednesday let out a sharp inhale and pulled her closer since Enid couldn’t move much. Her cold hands caressed her scared cheek, only making her swell in yearning. With all her might, she used the palm of her uninjured hand to lean in too, a fang growing into the kiss and poking the raven's lip. Enid didn’t notice and Wednesday didn’t mind it.

Once they had to part, they were panting to catch their breath, looking at each other to find any doubt or rejection. None found any, only love for one another.

“I’ve been wanting to do that for a while…” Enid whispered in bewilderment.

Wednesday hummed in amusement, pushing Enid back on the bed to not strain herself. She wiped a little blood dripping from the fang bite. “I have been adamant to never fall in love, but unfortunately, my damned family curse pulled me to you. I hope you know what this means for both our parties.”

Enid smiled nervously. “More than you know… And sorry about the fang.”

“A intoxicating addition Enid.” Wednesday smiled a little, then pulled away and assessed her injury, which the gauze was loose and nasty. “Your family will know true pain when I have the luxury to meet them face to face.” A murderous look came upon her face as she went to the counter to retrieve something.

Enid let out a nervous laugh, not sure what to say to that since they decided to hire hit men and other wolves to take her down. “I’ll change out your bandaging now. Hold still, mi magnífico lobo.” Enid only nodded dumbly.
