Summary
The Great Sacrifice to the Bringer of Life happened every five years, and it was a great honor to be selected. Upon completion of the whole process, the selected sacrifice lived well as a priest and bride of the Bringer of Life.
Catellus Anteros had not been eligible for the last selection process. The requirements were strict and testing was rigorous. The sacrifice had to be fertile, but untouched; born under the Bull-Snake of Vitus; blessed with the appropriate health and beauty; and, most importantly, not only fully willing, but fully enthusiastic.
Or, cuntboy of unspecified age (implied 16-19, depending on your level of historical accuracy) from an unspecified time and place decides to marry a vaguely Roman paganism-inspired god and become a priest of said god, which involves probably drugs, riding a statue's dick while high, and receiving the other priests' "offerings" the morning after.
