Summary
In an alternate world that looks much like our own, the rise of religious conservative movements across the world has caused reality to fracture at the seams from the pressure exerted upon it by individuals who want to control its narrative. This results in the subtle incursion of old gods, new gods, and magic into the world, and the resurgence of paganism as a countercultural movement, largely housed in religious autonomous zones that are far less safe from the outside world than they appear to be on the surface. This seemingly idyllic situation is marred by the fact that, unfortunately, people in this movement are still people, and can be almost as socially conservative as what they left behind when faced with something they don't understand.
This isn't that story, though.
This is the story of a teahouse employee in the autonomous zone of Ivywood, Ohio, whose life is set on a new course after a chance meeting ends with their recruitment into a secretive order of misfits and outcasts. Now they must navigate the strange, esoteric, and often incredibly demanding apprenticeship process of the Children of the Antlered Doe, under the tutelage of a mysterious woman named Anya who may be more than she appears.

Mermin, first of all, is extremely old, now obsolete terminology for creatures currently called merfolk (inclusive of mermaids and mermen).
It is specifically used for the half fish, half human looking creature that uses their singing as bait.On this coast, the term has survived the years.
It is, in fact, still used by the paranoid people of Hermit Harbour to refer to this specific myth of theirs.
Although they never as much utter a word about the beings, it is the most notable myth in town.

Ведь и разозлённая сущность тоже может навредить сильнее при таком присутствии магии, а ещё боги... But in this life, Albion collapses on a weirwood, his blood spilling into the roots of a heart tree, and with a prayer on his lips. The Old Gods take notice.
