Homecoming

Summary:

Things are a little different

Notes:

Fictober day 13: "We're on our own."

Work Text:

She was so small in his arms. The hospital had had doctors and nurses and cots and schedules. But now? He tightened his grip around the pink-swaddled bundle that had stolen his heart from the moment he'd seen two pink lines. "We're on our own."

Marinette laughed. She sounded tired. Exhausted.

"Thanks to her, we'll likely never be on our own again."

Luka looked up; his wife was smiling, her hand hovering over the dark curls covering Harmony's head. That was probably true.

His eyes swept over his wife and back down to their daughter. "But she's ours. To love and care for. Without any help."

Marinette scoffed. "Don't let Papa hear you say that."

Luka smiled. Marinette was right. Between her family and his, they had a lot of help ready to swoop in. "You're right. I was just—"

"Worrying? I thought that was my job."

Marinette was a natural worrier… but she deserved better than fear. He moved, cognizant of the precious bundle in his arms, heading to their room and the crib he'd set up months ago. "We can take turns."

Luka laid his daughter in her crib as gently as possible before turning to Marinette. Her drooping eyes were on their sleeping daughter. He slipped his hand around hers. "Sleep when the baby sleeps, right? Come to bed and rest with me. I'll meet you in my dreams."

Marinette let him lead her the few steps to bed, falling into it with a sigh. "Too tired to dream."

Luka climbed in beside her and pulled her close, closing his eyes as she snuggled into him. "That's okay. I'll dream of you anyway."
