Suddenly, I Had A Valentine

Summary:

"Will!" Mike exclaims, seeing him arrive. He lights up immediately, his expression changing from a worried frown to that smile that Will loves to see.

"Hey," Will greets, approaching him. He notices that Mike is holding a box of Reese's Pieces. "Those for me?" He questions, pointing to it.

"No, I got your favorite candy for me," Mike deadpans, teasing. He laughs, then hands them to Will. "Though, it depends on whether or not you can sneak them in."

Will raises his eyebrows. "Do you seriously doubt me, Michael?" He asks, shoving the box of candy into the lower pocket of his cargo pants.

Mike smiles at him. "After you, sir William," he says, gesturing towards the door.

Or...
Mike asks Will out for Valentine's day

Notes:

Flufftober day 13!

Don't judge me for writing a Valentine's Day fic in October, okay?? I'm a hopeless romantic and I love these two idiots 💙💛

Work Text:

Friday

Will just wants to get to his next class. Apparently, he can't have that!

There are so many slow walkers that he keeps getting stuck behind, and cheerleaders are taking up the hallways.

Finally, he makes it to his locker, but as soon as he opens it, his best friend appears behind him.

"Hey, Will!" Mike exclaims, getting Will's attention. Before Will can really process it, Mike says all in one breath, "You, me, movie theater, Monday, 6pm, I'll pay, no takebacksies."

Then he disappears down the hallway. Gone as if he was never even there.

What the hell was that about? Will wonders, turning back to his locker.

That's when he sees his calendar.

Next Monday is February 14th.

Valentines day.

Why would Mike ask him to go to the movies on Valentine's day? Does he even know that Monday is Valentine's day?

He probably doesn't.

For a while, Will just doesn't think about it too much. He focuses on class, and lets it sit in the back of his mind.

I'll deal with it later, he promises himself.

Lord knows he's not doing it alone though.

That's why, once lunch rolls around, Will sits at his usual table with Max and Jane. Unfortunately, the Party doesn't have lunch together. Mike, Dustin, and Lucas have the noon lunch, while Will and the girls have the one o'clock lunch.

"Hey," Will greets, sitting down with his tray. Max and Jane always get to lunch before him, since their previous classes are closer than his is.

Max smiles at him, taking a bite of her pizza. She swallows before speaking. "What's up, Will?" She salutes him.

He shrugs, biting his own pizza. It's the only good thing that their school ever serves. Probably the only thing that's actually edible, too.

"You seem... uneasy," Jane tells him. "Are you okay?"

"I don't know... I'm just... confused, I guess," Will admits.

Max furrows her eyebrows. "Confused about what?"

Will laughs to himself. "Ha, okay, so, hypothetically, if your best friend makes plans with you to go to the movies on Valentine's day... what would that mean? You know, hypothetically."

Max and Jane are silent.

"Mike did what?!" Max questions, astonished.

Will nervously chews on his lip. "During passing period, he just stopped by my locker, said, 'you, me, movies, Monday, 6pm, I'll pay, no takebacksies', then ran away."

"Does Mike know that Monday is Valentine's day?" Jane asks, and it's a valid question. Mike doesn't pay much attention to any holidays besides Halloween.

Max rolls her eyes. "He either doesn't, and just wants to hang out on Monday," she decides, "Or he does, but he was too scared to just ask you out."

Will nearly chokes on his pizza. "No! No way. Why would Mike ask me out?"

Max gives him an unimpressed look. "The same reason that I asked Jane out," she says. "He's gay and totally in love with you." Jane nods, agreeing.

Will can't believe that both his sister and his sister's girlfriend think that Mike's in love with him. Mike's never shown any interest in him!

As if she can read his thoughts, Max starts talking again. "And before you go telling yourself that he's never shown any interest in you, may I remind you of one, the D&D campaign that turned into you two just flirting with eachother. Two, all those times that he walks up randomly and hugs you from behind. Three, that time that you fell asleep in his arms on the couch and he carried you up to his room so that you'd be more comfortable. Four–"

"Okay!" Will cuts her off. "I get it, there might be a few clues that point to him possibly liking me back."

"More like definitely," Jane argues.

Will sighs. "I don't kn–"

"Look, Will," Max interrupts. "Go to the movies with him on Monday, and if nothing happens, then nothing happens. But if he does anything slightly romantic, well, I think you'll have your answer about whether or not he likes you."

Monday

At 5:30pm on the dot, Will leaves his house on his bike. He wasn't too sure what to wear, so he just played it safe with cargo pants and a band t-shirt. Hopefully Mike thinks it's nice.

He bikes all the way to downtown Hawkins, and leaves his bike at the bike rack in front of the movie theater. Mike is waiting there for him, leaning against the wall.

Once they have their tickets, and Will successfully sneaks the candy inside, they take their seats in the back of the theater. Almost no one is here for the 6pm showing of Radio Days. There are a few older people towards the front of the theater, but that's it.

"Can I have some?" Mike asks, as Will pulls the box of candy out of his pocket.

"You have popcorn," Will argues, gesturing to the red and white striped box in Mike's lap.

Mike pouts. "It's Valentines day and you're being mean to me. This is illegal."

So he does know. "How is that illegal?" Will asks, genuinely confused.

"Just give me the damn chocolate," Mike says, avoiding the question.

"Now who's being mean?"

Mike gives him that sad puppy dog look. "I can make it up to you," he promises.

"How?"

Unexpectedly, Mike leans over the armrest that separates them. He presses his lips to Will's, kissing him.

Holy crap! Will thinks. Mike is kissing me! This is Will's first kiss. His first kiss with Mike. Hopefully it's not the last.

"By being your boyfriend," Mike answers, pulling away. His expression falters. "Um, if you want–"

"Of course I want that," Will tells him, grinning.

Mike smiles back. "Okay."

"Okay."
