“What.. happened to you-?” he echoed softly. The smile stretched wider, too wide, and then it broke into laughter. It started quiet and grew until it bounced off the obsidian walls, until his shoulders shook and he had to brace a hand against the cold stone. His grip tightened around the totem until the edges bit into his palm, and he laughed harder, because it hurt, and because the pain was the only thing in the room that felt real.
What had happened to him? No one would understand. No one would ever understand how many people he had lost to get here. How many names he had stopped saying out loud. Leader of Null. Feared. Respected.
Mapicc. The laughter stopped. Just like that. His hand stilled.
“Commander. I need you to start initiating the plan,” he said, voice flat and calm, as though he hadn’t just been howling at an empty room. “Get rid of anyone who stands in our way. No matter who.”
The Commander emerged from the shadows. Any other person would have missed him, but he had been there for the entire conversation, and he had heard every second of the laughter. He knelt, bowing slightly. “As you wish, my Leader.”
