Silence After the Transition

Summary:

After another brutal night of rhythm and peril, BF’s exhaustion finally cracks his invincible stage persona. At three a.m., in the rain-soaked quiet of their apartment, his girlfriend reminds him he doesn’t have to fight, just rest, and be held.

Work Text:

The rain beats a frantic, rhythmic tattoo against the dark glass of the apartment window, blurring the neon streetlights of the city far below into smears of crimson and gold. Inside, the world shrinks down to a profound, dead-silent three in the morning. There is only the low, steady hum of the apartment's radiator, the faint, flickering blue glow of a television screen casting soft shadows across the living room floor, and the rich, comforting scent of old vinyl records stacked neatly beside the record player.

On the stage, under the blinding glare of the spotlights, everything is noise, velocity, and mortal peril.

BF stares down at his hands, his knuckles still faintly bruised from gripping his microphone through hours of relentless freestyle battles.

Boyfriend: (strained) Beep... boop-bop... bep ba beep skdoo?

(Translation: What if next time... what if my voice cracks?)

Girlfriend: You don't have to carry the whole world on your shoulders every single night, babe. The mic isn't a sword you need to keep sharp twenty-four hours a day. Right now, there are no speakers blasting, no judges keeping score, and no one trying to take you away from me.

BF looks up, his dark eyes catching the light, filled with a raw, exhausting vulnerability that he never shows anyone else. The crushing pressure of always needing to be invincible—of needing to conquer every rival, dodge every bullet, and out-sing every eldritch horror just to prove he is worthy of standing by her side—threatens to choke him. He takes a shaky, ragged breath, letting his shoulders sink as the tension vibrates through his long limbs.

Boyfriend: Beep boop bop... skdoo bep, skdaa beep bop bip boop.

(Translation: It feels like if I miss even one beat, everything shatters.)

Girlfriend: Then let me carry you for a change. You're safe here, sweetie. Let it all go.

BF gasps softly as her arms lock around him, his initial stiff resistance melting away instantly at the contact. He exhales a long, shuddering sigh that stirs the  hair resting against his chest, his massive frame folding inward as he yields completely to her embrace.

GF reaches up, her hands sliding up his back to cradle the back of his neck. She pulls him down closer, resting her cheek against his chest so she can feel the rapid, heavy thumping of his heart beginning to slow down to match her own steady rhythm.

Girlfriend: I'm right here. No microphones, no arrows, no monsters. Just you and me.

Boyfriend: Boop... beep-beep... skeep bop... skeepo beep bo bop skdoo beepo.

(Translation: I was so scared tonight... I thought I wasn't going to make the final transition.)

Girlfriend: But you did. You always do. Because you're the most stubborn, brilliant, wonderful idiot in this entire universe. But you don't have to fight right now.

To chase away the lingering shadows of adrenaline and fear, GF pulls back just a fraction of an inch, keeping her hands resting firmly on his shoulders. Without a word of warning, she leans in and presses a soft, lingering kiss right to the center of his forehead, right beneath the brim of his cap.

Boyfriend: (startled, breathless) Beep?!

Before he can even finish his surprised chirp, GF presses another kiss to his left cheek, right over the slight stubble of his jawline, followed immediately by one on the tip of his nose. The sudden, playful assault of affection catches him entirely off guard, breaking through the heavy fortress of his anxiety with the force of pure, unfiltered warmth.

Girlfriend:  One for every time you worried tonight, one for every crazy note you hit, and one just because I love you way too much.

Boyfriend: (chuckling softly) Bap... skidoo-boop...

(Translation: Hey... stop that... )

Girlfriend: (laughing quietly) Your tough image can wait until tomorrow afternoon. Right now, you're my sleepy giant.

The resistance completely evaporates from BF's body, replaced by a genuine, deeply relaxed smile that stretches across his face, lighting up his features in a way the stage lights never could. The nervous twitch in his fingers vanishes as he wraps his long arms securely around her, lifting her slightly off the floor for a brief moment before settling back down so her feet rest comfortably against his sneakers.

BF buries his face deep into the crook of his girlfriend's neck. He holds her with an intensity that speaks volumes of his absolute devotion, pressing her against him as if he could fuse their very souls together, treating her like she is the undisputed center of his entire universe.

Boyfriend: (muttering sleepily) Mmm... beep...

(Translation: You're my whole world... )

Girlfriend: (softly, melting into the embrace) I know, babe. And I'd sit on my speakers through every single one of them. Now stop talking and let's go to sleep.

Together, they migrate slowly toward the oversized sofa, their steps heavy with accumulated exhaustion and the profound relief of safety. They tangle their limbs together on the cushions, pulling the thick, fleece blanket from the back of the sofa over their shoulders. The television screen flickers silently in the corner, casting a cool, rhythmic pulse of blue light across the ceiling as an old, instrumental jazz record spins down to a gentle halt on the turntable across the room.

BF loops his arms securely around her waist, tucking her head neatly under his chin while his long legs intertwine with hers beneath the heavy blankets. The steady, torrential drumming of the rain outside becomes a natural lullaby, drowning out the distant echoes of the city and the phantom sounds of the neon arenas they left behind.

Girlfriend: (whispering into the dark) Goodnight, my love.

Boyfriend: (softly, murmuring against her hair) Boop... zzz...

(Translation: Sweet dreams... I'm finally safe...)

Within moments, their breathing falls into a slow, synchronized cadence. Locked completely in an unbreakable, warm embrace, they drift off into a deep, dreamless sleep, shielded from the chaos of the world by nothing more than the profound, absolute trust they have in each other.
