Work Text:
Samira’s day had been going well.
She had had nice patients
Easy patients
A sweet mom with a sick baby
An older woman who had a cough that wouldn’t go away
A regular who came in for something she knew was a cover for wanting comfort
Her mom hadn't called
Robby hadn’t yelled
She hadn’t had a breakdown in the bathroom
She had gone 4 days without one
A new record
That was, until hour 7
Her patient wouldn’t tell her anything
She could hear Whitaker’s patient screaming from across the hall
It was all becoming too much.
Then Gloria came to the floor
And she was called over by Robby
And brought upstairs into her office
And told she was done
Their voices sugar soft
Their words sharper than the scalpel she had used to cut open a chest
An hour ago
They cited how she would be better suited somewhere else
Somewhere smaller
Somewhere where taking her time
Wouldn't be as big of an issue
She begged
She pleaded
Her eyes wet
Robby stayed stony
Gloria smiled pityingly
Samira broke
Her world collapsing
Every built wall
Every bridge
Every night out drinking
Every med student
Burning in the house she couldn’t escape.
Her time at PTMC was done
And she hadn’t even begun
She walked out before she signed the papers
She slammed the door.
She walked out.
She walked past the face of Jack.
(the one who cared)
Feeling the words begin to leave his lips
You ok, sweetheart?
(She tried not to throw up.)
She walked past the face of Trinity
(the one who was brilliant beyond measure)
Feeling the smirk drop from her face
She walked past the face of Cassie
(the one who she loved)
Feeling her eyes stay, creased with worry
She walked out.
The cold air hit her like a slap in the face
She couldn't breathe
But she had to
There was nowhere to go
There was no one for her
There was no one
She ran.
Ran as far as she could away.
Away from Gloria
Away from Robby
Away from her heart
Away from her mind.
Slo-Mo her ass
