Work Text:

The day the sky fell was a stressful one. Seokjin woke up late so his boyfriend already left for class and he didn’t have a chance to bid his farewell, he was late for his double shift and someone, somewhere nearby decided to do something so the entire day the coffee shop he worked at was swamped

Sometime after sunset people in the café started to ‘ooh’ and ‘ah’ at something outside that turned out to be the most beautiful meteor shower he’s ever seen, he only went out for a second, just to get a better look at it, but before he could go back inside, one of the falling lights hit him

His coworkers tried to make him go to the hospital, or at least home, saying they’ll cover for him and that he can’t carry on like nothing happened after getting hit by one of those weird lights. Seokjin refused all their suggestions, he shook off whatever bizarre thing he was feeling and got back to work

He couldn’t help but worry a little more when he found out Namjoon was also in the same situation as him but seeing the vastness of the phenomenon and the lack of knowledge on TV, he realized there was nothing much either of them could do at the moment that would help

As the days passed, Namjoon’s hair changed colors, as well as the hair of some of the customers, but not his

In an already abnormal situation, being even more different made Seokjin feel uneasy – why wasn’t his hair changing? Is he in danger? Is Namjoon? No one had answers. Then things had to get even more complicated

“I think I can control water” Namjoon said as he came out of the bathroom

“Did your friend teach you a new trick?” Seokjin wasn’t fazed, he only turned a page and kept reading his magazine, not even bothering to look up

“No. Look” Namjoon brought a glass of water from the kitchen, set it down on the coffee table and sat down next to his boyfriend. Seokjin couldn’t do anything but stare as Namjoon stuck one of his fingers in the water and then when he pulled it away a string of water stuck to his finger for full two seconds before falling and splashing on the table

Seokjin was speechless, he couldn’t move a muscle, he just gaped at Namjoon, thinking ‘what the fuck

“Holy shit” Namjoon looked like he saw a ghost

“What is it?” Seokjin turned around in search for whatever spooked Namjoon

“I- I just heard you voice in my head, but your lips didn’t move and your eyes were glowing”

“Glowing?”

“Yeah, your irises were completely silver! You were thinking ‘what the fuck?’, weren’t you?”

“I was! What the hell is going on?”

“You don’t think…this could be from that weird meteor shower?”

“It has to be, but how is any of this even possible? We just grew superpowers? And what is it with the hair colors? If we both got hit and we both can do freaky things, why didn’t my hair change like yours?”

“If yours didn’t change there must be others like you, the problem in this mess is that no one can know anything – no one knows the cause, they say no one can learn anything about it because people’s physical tests come back normal, the hair colors thing made a pretty big wave and now these powers, we can’t be the only ones to discover them, there will be some sort of hysteria for sure” Namjoon sighed

“What do you mean?” Seokjin looked at him worriedly

“You don’t really see it since you yourself have normal hair but whenever I go on a train or a bus or anywhere public with a lot of adults, people will look at me strangely or even would try to avoid or keep a distance between them and me. The moment this will become known to the general public, there would be a witch hunt”

“Are you sure you are not just pessimistic? Everybody saw how it happened, it’s not like we asked for this, or like we are evil”

“I might be, but you know how people treat those that are different, most people can’t wrap their heads around something unfamiliar. But as you said, it could just be me, we’ll have to wait and see”

The troubles started the day after. When an overly demanding and especially obnoxious costumer clearly heard what he thought about her, Seokjin faked an ache and fled home. He spent the next couple of days at home, trying to find a way to control his new power, only to be fired by a phone call when Namjoon’s gloomy prophecy came true

“Yeah, I don’t think I should go out in the next few days either, people saw some shady guys going around campus and some teachers refuse to be in the same room as us”

“This is a catastrophe Joonie, we need to make money somehow, we don’t have any savings”

“I can still mix and write from here, I work on my laptop even in the studio”

“Which is nice and all, but you don’t make a whole lot, we somehow managed with the two of us but now what?” Seokjin was halfway into a panic attack. He knew his boyfriend wasn’t the one to blame for the shitty situation but he didn’t step out of their apartment in couple of days and the helplessness was getting to him

“You need to find a new job, it won’t be that hard since you don’t look like you have powers”

“But what if the same thing would happen again? You know I’m bad at controlling my thoughts”

“Then you just have to find a job where you won’t raise suspicion”

Easier said than done. It took Seokjin another three restless, sleepless days to find a little convenience store that was missing some staffers that suddenly disappeared. But while Namjoon could afford working few days a week if he made sure to cover himself, he worked the night shifts, hoping that the only people that he would encounter are going to be too tired or too high to notice if his control will slip

But then, one night few weeks later, Seokjin was in especially bad mood – he didn’t like working those night shifts, he liked working with sunlight surrounding him and busy people and coworkers, being alone at night with the only light coming from shitty fluorescent put him more and more on edge, not to mention it took from the time he could be spending with his boyfriend, sleeping. So when two shady teenagers walked into the store, trying to hide their faces from him and clearly planning something noxious, he just about had enough

At the first note of rustling bags he shot them a thought, ‘back off, don’t even think about it’. The boys were trying to flee from the shop but Seokjin blocked their way, ready to give them a lecture about stealing, only for the words to die in his throat when he got a glimpse of their colorful hair and shabby state

Instead of kicking them out he asked them to stay and they talked until his replacement came

Their names were Jimin and Jungkook, they were three and five years younger than him and they’ve been homeless for a while now. He didn’t want to be too invasive but he couldn’t just let them go back like nothing happened, so he invited them over to Namjoon’s and his apartment. He pretended that he couldn’t see the tears in their eyes while they frantically gobbled what he assumed to be their first proper meal in forever as he went to wake up his boyfriend

“Joonie, Joonie” he shook him, not especially gently “there are these guys here-“

“What?” Namjoon jumped awake, eyes wide

“They are not here to take us, I invited them over” Namjoon visibly relaxed at his words “they are like us, ‘stardust’ or whatever, they’ve been homeless for few weeks”

Namjoon rubbed his eyes “let me guess” he groaned “you want to adopt them. Jin, people aren’t like stray dogs”

“I know that, but I can’t just let them live on the street” he looked at Namjoon pleadingly

“Let me take a wash to wake up, I can at least meet them before deciding anything”

Gleefully, Seokjin returned to the dining table to find two empty plates and two pairs of wide eyes glancing around like they are about to be ambushed

“Namjoon will join us soon. Is there something else you need? Are you still hungry? Thirsty?”

“No, we are okay” the one with the gray hair, Jimin, said “we should go, you must be tired after work” the boys were getting up but Seokjin stopped them

“Don’t worry about me. Was something wrong with the food?”

“Everything was great, really, we just don’t want to burden you any more, I’m sure you have stuff to do”

“Not really. Look, I wanted to wait so all four of us could talk about it together, but what do you think about moving in with us?”

“M-moving in? Like living here? No way, we can’t ask you for something so big!” Jimin looked like he was going to have a mild heart attack

“I’m the one who’s asking you, there is no way I can just let you sleep out there when I can help, even if you managed until now, what will you do when winter will start for real?”

“We’ll find a way, I can keep us warm”

“What will you do about clothes? What will you do when it starts snowing?”

“We’ll find a way” Jimin repeated, somewhat frantically

“The real question is how long you can hide” Namjoon’s deep voice said before the man himself walked in. Seokjin could see Jungkook becoming even more tense as Namjoon’s looming figure got closer, Namjoon himself didn’t notice it since he was too busy drying his hair with a towel “I don’t know how much you know but there will be people searching for you and the likes of you, I assume you ran away from home, they don’t really have the whole hunting people down thing perfected yet but they will soon, not to mention stars are reappearing in the sky, people are dying”

“Which is even more of a reason for us to get out of here, we are only putting you in danger!” Jimin insisted

“We can protect ourselves, we can help protect you, this apartment is ten times safer than being out in the open! At least consider it” Seokjin pleaded “stay for a little longer and talk about it”

“We can’t possibly do that, we just met you, we can’t ask you for something like this” Jimin was just about to break, Seokjin could see that the promise for meals, showers and a roof over their heads was too tempting

“I’ll tell you the truth” Namjoon spoke before Seokjin could push further “Jin here wants you to move in because of completely selfish reasons – he always wanted a dog but we can’t have pets in this apartment, not to mention he’s been worrying himself sick with all that happened, having the two of you here to take care of would give him an outlet for stuff, as well as will give me a break from his endless maternal caring. Not to mention that if we’ll let you just go back out there and something will happen to you it would definitely be our fault. So please at least talk this over before giving us your final answer”

“I…we…it’s just…” Jimin looked at Jungkook a couple of times “we really can’t” he said weakly

“We are just like you. We are just as deep in” Seokjin tried. Both of the boys sent wary looks toward Namjoon and he realized he still had the towel on his head so they didn’t know he was like them so Seokjin pulled the towel off, the boys visibly relaxed when they saw his hair and Jimin nodded “we’ll be down the hall” he said and exited the kitchen with Namjoon

“I get it now, they look adorable, there is no way I can let them go out there again” Namjoon sighed after they got to their room

“Jungkook is still in high school age, what kind of monsters can force him to live like this?”

“They say they are afraid, they always do. I heard they have concentration camps for us now, with fences and everything”

“If they won’t agree to stay I think I’ll just lock them in” Seokjin shuddered

“But you know…we going to have money problem again”

“Yeah, I thought that much, we’ll just have to eat cheaper things, less meat and all of that. People without a heart must be living so peacefully and wealthily”

Jimin and Jungkook ended up agreeing to their offer, but not without Jimin insisting on giving them all of his savings

they learnt to live with each other, all having to get used to their new roles and roommates. That is, until Jungkook found Taehyung.
