Work Text:
Lance was a romantic. He took every excuse he had to spoil his boyfriend with gifts and affection to prove his love to him. A few years back, he would have rather wanted to beat him, but time made it that today, Keith was the happiness of his life. The man of his life.
And Lance wanted to prove it to him.
He had carefully saved his money to buy him a wedding ring. He had booked in their favorite restaurant for Valentine's Day. And he planned to propose during the evening.
Keith had tried to convince him they didn't need to go out on february 14th, but the americano-cuban wouldn't have it. His plan was already on the move anyway.
He entered quietly into the restaurant, his hand in Keith's, and they sat at a table slightly set back, like he had ask. He didn't want to be in the center of the restaurant for someone to see him get the little box out and ruins the surprise ! That was out of the question !
The evening passed nicely, and he had decided to ask the big question during dessert, while diverting slowly to his idea before getting his little box out of his pocket. It appeared another man in the restaurant had had the same idea, and while their desserts were placed in front of them, they noticed the man getting up to get down on one knee to ask his girlfriend to marry him. She screamed, litterally, then shooted positively numerous times and jump to his neck, making them fall down. Applause resounded around them, and both young men clapped their hands. Lance putted. He had just been overshadowed by the man.
_Proposing on february 14th... tss, that's stupid.
Lance looked at Keith, which looked away for the other couple and was concentrated on emptying his glass of water. Lance swallowed, a sudden weight in his stomach.
_What? It's a good day for that, right?
Keith put his glass down et looked at the brown-haired with a put.
_Yeah, but what if your other half says no? In front of the whole restaurant? Valentine's Day won't ever be the same after that... People can propose anytime, but not today, you know...
The brown-haired wouldn't admit it, not right now, but Keith was right. So he did like him, finishing his dessert in a heavy vibe. The box in his pocket weighted too much all of a sudden, and he didn't like the idea he had just let his chance go.
They exited the restaurant after paying, Keith putting his hand in Lance's. Keith lloked at him with tender eyes, like he tried to dissipate the uneasiness surrounding them for the last 20 minutes. Lance smiled at him and got closer, tenderly kissing his lips, then getting them back to their cozy home to enjoy the rest of the evening in their bed.
Several hours later, Lance awoke. It was still early, the sun barely casting his first rays. Next to him, Keith was hugging his pillow and still peacefully asleep. The brown-haired couldn't help his index finger stroking the pale cheek of his most loved one. He had thought about the cancelled proposal since last night, but all of a sudden, it came back to him. While looking at the serene and peaceful face of Keith, his other half, his heart, his love, he thought to him that he should have asked anyway. He didn't want to spend another day without asking him, without having his answer and, if it was affirmative like he hoped, to call him his fiancé from now on.
Keith moved and opened his eyes slowly, a gentle smile growing on his face when he saw Lance.
_Morning, he said while he got closer.
_Good morning, Keith.
Their voices were but a whisper. They were still in a cocoon of awakening, between sleeping and being awake. A cocoon that voices too loud would break.
Lance got closer too and embraced Keith while sighing of happiness. He felt his lover's nose against his brown neck, cuddling, and his hand stroking his back. His blue eyes closed and he felt a little like he was in cotton, Keith's smell relaxing him.
_Keith?
_Hmm?
_Marry me.
Keith looked up at him with a frown.
_What?
Lance stroked his hair, getting a black lock behind his ear.
_It's february 15th, so if you agree, I... I want us to be fiancés.
Keith's eyebrows rose and his purple eyes widened. Lance let him have a moment to think, he could see he was a little lost. Then Keith put his nose against Lance's neck and sighed.
_Impossible... you're incredible...
_Hum... Is that a no?
_No, I want us to...
He rose up. The cotton like atmosphere disappeared, but it wasn't any less benevolent. Keith smiled at him while stroking his cheek.
_To answer your question... yes, I wanna marry you.
Lance smiled and took the hand against his cheek, kissing his palm.
_And if I acted weird, it's because I wanted to be the one asking this question...
_You needed to be faster then.
Lance sat up to kiss him tenderly, cupping his jaw with his hands. Keith smiled.
_I should have been able to ask you yesterday, but... but the ring was late...
_The ring?
Lance backed a little, looking surprisingly at him. Keith bit his lip while nodding.
_Yes. I ordered the ring because there was only the expositional model left in store... and the delivery got delayed.
_Keith...
The black-haired sighed heavily, and was suddenly in his lover's arms. Lance kissed his shoulder, then got on his hands and knees to crawl on the bed to get his jacket still on the floor and get the jewelry box in his pocket.
He and Keith were still naked, the first rays of sun getting weakly through their window's curtains. Lance revealed the little box and Keith's smile grow from ear to ear. He opened it to the black-haired, which bit his thumb when he saw the ring nested inside. It was nothing eccentric, just a golden ring but with a heart with K & L engraved into the inside.
They looked at each other, their lips stretched into two wide grins. Keith took the ring and turned it around between his fingers. Lance got it back and stretched his hand to get Keith's. The black-haired offered it to him, extending his annular and by extension his auricular. The ring was on his finger in a matter of seconds. He took a moment to look at it and touch it on his skin, then he went to kiss his from-now-on fiancé. Lance kissed back, slowly and getting his finger into his black hair.
_My ring is arriving tomorrow, he said against Lance's lips.
_Good! You'll put it on me then.
They unlocked their lips, Keith stared intensely at him.
_I'm sorry for yesterday when I said Valentine's Day wasn't a good time to propose... but it was my idea and because of this delay, I was so angry...
_So we had the same idea?
He nodded. Lance got them back to their pillows, cuddling the man he loved the most. The man that loved him so much he too needed to have him by his side all their life.
In the end, his proposal wasn't perfect, but it was even better than he had imagined it.
