Upcoming changes to comments

In our next release, we'll be rolling out two changes to comments on the Archive. The first change will provide both work creators and site admins with the ability to freeze comment threads. The second change will provide site admins options to restrict comments on news posts, much like creators can restrict comments on their works.

Comment freezing

Creators will soon be able to freeze comment threads on their works using the "Freeze Thread" button. Freezing a thread prevents new replies from being added to a comment or to any of its replies. It also prevents comments in the thread from being edited.

A comment with replies. Each comment has a Freeze Thread button.

Frozen comments will have a "Frozen" indicator and the "Reply" button will be hidden. An "Unfreeze Thread" option will allow creators to re-enable replies.

A comment with replies. The first reply and its replies are frozen and have a Frozen indicator, which looks like a pressed button. They also have Unfreeze Thread buttons.

Although "Freeze Thread" initially prevents replies to all comments in a thread, creators can use "Unfreeze Thread" to selectively re-enable replies for some comments in a thread.

Site admins will also be able to freeze comments on news posts, and the Policy & Abuse team will be able to freeze comments anywhere on the site.

News post comment settings

In August, we gave creators more control over who can comment on their works, enabling them to choose between allowing comments from anyone, restricting comments to registered users, or turning comments off completely.

Site admins will soon have the same options when creating and editing news posts. This will allow our teams to turn off comments on outdated news posts and prevent newer ones from being overwhelmed by spam (e.g. advertisements or, more commonly, short series of random letters left by bots).

If comments on a news post are turned off, or if you're logged out and comments are restricted to registered users, the comment form will be replaced with a message indicating which setting is in use.

If you can't comment on a news post, you are always welcome to contact Support with any feedback.

We hope both of these changes will help the users and volunteers who read, write, and receive comments on the Archive!

Lovely of AO3 to give new features, but looking through the comments here, I feel like I'm on Livejournal-lite. You kids are getting close. It's nice you can freeze, I suppose, but you could always delete. Or you could Idk, suck it up and grow a pair and tell your harasser to shut the fuck up.
This new feature doesn't stop any determined, extremely bored asshole from commenting anon, or even if you have a fic set for only for registered members, they could make an account. So basically in AO3's attempt to do something helpful, they have invited the socks. I'm old enough to remember this stupid bullshit. Harassers will ALWAYS find a work around. Socks, VPNs, throw away e-mails. It ends in a bunch of bullshit arguments over the stupidest of crap. Maybe people could learn to live and let live and stop caring about things other people write. I know though, that would be too simple.
You think regular politics are ridiculous, look at fandom politics.
The only reason I can see to freeze rather than simply deleting and ignoring is to advertise the wank. Yes, the wanky wank. Unless of course, you don't like the wank. Then you could always delete, not reply, etc... This could so easily be be abused, but if y'all want AO3 to become FF.net, keep spending your time whining about this "missing" feature or that instead of reading or writing.
As someone who's been in fandom too long, I suggest enjoying yourselves rather than worrying about comments and what you can do with them. I don't know what it is about fandom, but it seems to attract the most dramatic people on the face of the earth. Go write. Go read. Enjoy your life. Stop worrying about what some jerk said about your fic.

  You seem to be under the impression that people can create multiple accounts within seconds on ao3 like a social media site, like you don’t have to submit your email address to join the queue and wait more than a day to receive an invitation to create an account.     You seem to have missed my point: The part where I said determined harassers ALWAYS find a way.
    Yes, years ago, way back when AO3 was new, there weren't a ton of invite codes floating around. You couldn't just request one. I was there. I remember. I was given one (which at the time was a scarce commodity) by a fellow writer who was working to help grow the site. The account I use now, which is near six years old--I believe I waited two days after requesting it.
    But never underestimate the determination of fandom trolls. There are places on the internet you can still find the chronicles of wank. The dregs of the great wank wars of the 2000's still exist in places like a snapshot in time. Journal_fen bullshit, FF.net forum wank, FF.net comment wank, LJ wank. Harassers, flamers, sporkers, scandals.
    Thankfully, it seems like fandom has got away from that crazy viciousness to a degree, but this smacks of "oh we're going down this road again," imo. I love AO3, I hate FF.net. I don't fancy AO3 becoming FF.net.
    Currently, I have eight invite codes to give out. You can make an account right away with them. If I were the type who was bored or obsessive or had no life, I could make several accounts for the purpose of rabid harassment.
    From what I see, the majority of authors don't lock their fics for registered users anyhow.
    But, I digress. Comment freezing is a slippery slope. As far as I know, AO3 doesn't ban at the IP, and even if they did, these days, it doesn't require special computer knowledge to use a VPN.
    Spammers probably don't spam here much because what would be the point? It's a horrible target for spamming. Who is going to bother with an obviously spammed "fic?" Who is going to read comments that may be spam and click on them? Spammers have so many easier targets to go to get clicks. Example: social media or the comments sections on most political sites.
    The block button might be a better feature, but it still would have the same issues. Honestly, as a member, I'd rather AO3 spend their resources (donations) on fixing tag issues (like the fact reordering them is a pain in the dick and sometimes impossible), other works related features, or defending our right to publish transformative works.
    The Archive has always been a place for people to post any story they write. It's a place of freedom for artists and writers, but whining and (wahh, this isn't good enough) always leads to shitstorms and nothing is ever enough for whiners.

      Why bother with anything? We can never have a perfect solution so it's better to not try at all.

        The site had enough moderation for years. You don't like a comment? Delete it. You don't like comments from anons? Don't allow them. You don't like non members reading your fic? Don't allow unregistered members to access them. You were harassed? Use the report feature. Bots? Delete. Report. I've had to contact AO3 before, not for a harassment reports, but questions. They do a great job of responding quickly.
        I saw bot fics, but you're being intellectually dishonest. This isn't about bot fics, nothing I addressed was about a rash of bot fics. Nothing about the feature announcement had anything to do with bots other than administrators dealing with them in these site posts. And yeah, freezing bots on the news posts, sure. Sounds good.
        This is about crying for "My features!" "My buttons!" Which, based on experience, are NEVER enough.
        Riddle me this... why would you need to freeze a thread? Someone harasses you, argues with you, makes you feel uncomfortable because *gasps* they gave you concrit--why not just fucking delete it? Why not stop responding, or at it's worse (actual harassment, not my feelings got hurt), report the user? There are very few reasons to leave a thread or comment standing and freeze it unless you want to leave the shit sitting there. If it's so horribly upsetting, delete it and/or ignore it and get on with your life.
        That's not how it works though. A frozen comment thread full of wank makes a lovely screen cap when you want to go bitch and get attention and engage in stupid ship wars or whatever the fandom outrage du jour is. And make no mistake, I've written the kind of shit I could easily be attacked for. Underage, I hardly tag and and go with "creator chose not to use archive warnings," I don't trigger warn. I do a bit more than what any author of a fucking book gives you, so I could be a real nice target of assholes. And I have been at times over my fanfic writing years. So it's not as if I don't know the woes of dealing with antis (or what we used to call them--fucking flamers (stop giving them a special name, btw, they are bored flamers)). I delete bullshit. I delete "Omg, why didn't you say who was the top, I'm going to cry. 😭"
        Really, a lot of you need to grow the fuck up, and learn to take a fucking breath. AO3 provides you a place to read for your joy and/or write for it, and this is what people want them to spend time on? They provide a place free of charge as your playground, and this is the bullshit you want them to bother with--giving us a demon child of Livejournal and FF.net.

        If someone thrives in wanks, they can still do it with the current state of things. Not deleting, continuing pointless arguments, making screenshots etc. This new feature may be a new weapon in the arsenal but one that doesn't really make much difference if someone is so set to being a bad internet user.
        I've never had to deal with wanks, trolls, flamers and the lot (and maybe that's because I never really interacted online that much, so maybe I don't fully know what I'm talking about), but I can imagine very plausible scenarios in which this feature, used correctly and responsibly, could come in handy to actually prevent or stop the wank more than already existing ones.
        For example: I post a work; a reader gives me feedback and criticism (which I always, always appreciate and encourage, for the record), maybe they do so a little bit aggressively; I surely don't mind and answer to them wishing to enjoy constructive discussion; another reader who is far less chill than I am reads the comments, misinterpretes them as aggression or whatever and wrongly assumes they need to intervene against the critical reader to come to their beloved author's rescue; they start to argue and the thing escalates, with more people jumping in to just "destory the troll" or whatever they might think they are doing. It could totally happen, especially to authors who have a big readership and/or who write about controversial themes.
        At that point the civil discussion I was having with my reader is disrupted; that thread is unsalvageable. I could just stop reading, leave them go at one another's throats, and that would make me a bad author, letting my work be used that way, and it would only add to the now pointless shitshow. I could start just deleting, but they could very well keep coming and writing pointless shit to one another and I'd have to keep deleting.
        What I could do with this feature is: keep the con-crit comments, delete the useless wank and freeze the thread to avoid more new useless shit that I'd have to waste my time deleting, and that people could worsen before I get there to delete. What's so bad here?
        Or think about those volatile people who cannot, for the life of them, ignore trolls or flamers or wankers; as soon as they see a comment they must answer, usually escalating and adding to what they were trying to avoid. There are so many of these easily triggered folks out there. To these peple, freezing when they see the thing is starting to escalate beyond the scope of the comments could be good, and for the community as well, since it would prevent more useless wank before it can even happen.
        Of course it's not that we need this feature so bad otherwise "omg our experience on here is terribly lacking, what shall we do"; because I totally agree with you that we are here for writing and reading and sharing our works. And it's perfectly true that there are very many circumstances in which already existing moderation tools are perfectly sufficient. But one doesn't need to see this feature as a warning for the coming of Armageddon on the AO3 for god's sake, and there are good uses to be made out of it. For the bad uses: the effects would be the same of already existing features.
        And if some people will abuse this one, as they maybe already do the others, perhaps to avoid criticism or to protect their fragile ego, or to showcase ship wars on their works: their bad. They are disrupting their own experience, their own space, their own work. Let them. As you said, trolls and bad internet users will always find a way. They already do. This feature doesn't really make any difference to them, but could make some positive difference to responsible internet users, who should be the focus, always. It's because there already are many bad internet users that this kind of features exist and are implemented, not the other way around, that they generate bad users.

        Sounds like you've very concerned about being flamed. The majority of my fanfics are underage or noncon or both and I tag for their content because I like reading that stuff and I want to other people to find it and read it.
        I can delete flames, report harassers, and freeze threads that have descended into readers arguing with each other (THAT'S the reason for freezing). Easy peasy. But you know, carry on hiding your fics under sparse tags instead of using the tools AO3 provides you because freeze peach or whatever.

Glad to see all of these updates for making a user's online experience more positive.
There's constructive criticism, written in a positive and friendly way.
Then there's trolling, which should go immediately into the trash, IMO. I won't waste my valuable time on it.
I haven't had a whole lot of trouble, just a few questionable occurrences. But it is wonderful that online bullying and harassment is discouraged, and to allow writers to be able to handle it the best way for them. A blocking feature will be a good thing too.

        It is hard to get potential views on fanfic sites these days. It's a great place to practice though if you want to write Original fiction. And you probably don't want to mix names. I don't read in those fandoms, but I do editing work and beta and write fanfic and original work.

        Thanks a ton. I swear, these guys are just opening the floodgates for sock accounts. And Anons are nigh-immune to deletes anyway since they can just post faster than their comments can be deleted. I fear that this is gonna set a precedent for the staff to allow these preppy high schoolers to straight up turn off comments like they do on Youtube, just to "wash their hands of it" as they put it before. And once that happens, their works will get the "Mishonh from God" treatment, where thwir fanfics get read on youtube and mocked to hell and back, And nobody wants the only way their work gets seen to be the "Mishonh from God" treatment because there's no block button for a Youtube video on Ao3.

        I truly do. I ignore this shit 99% of the time, this is actually the first time in ten years I've decided to throw my hat in the ring and deal with the onslaught of this garbage. Why I went anon. I know how they are. Maybe not these guys bitching left and right at me (honestly after writing for years and watching wank, they seem pretty weak), but these type of people In the past have doxed, stalked, flamed, actually harassed people, trying to make writers lives a living hell doing what they like--writing. Because they don't have the right opinions.
        Fandom has always had a certain groupthink, if you're not down with it, it's a pain in the ass.
        I warned people about this years ago, dealing with their precursors on LJ and other spots. The PC police. The criers. The controllers. The authoritarians. I'm sure somewhere you'll be accused in this thread of wearing a MAGA hat or being a fascist or racist or homophobe or transphobe or harasser or whatever "ism" they would like to use. I'm sure I will be too, then again, I've dealt with far worse.

        But Twitter and Tumblr's communities shouldn't be the basis to base future internet circles. Anyone who's been on those site will either tell you that they should never be emulated, or that all internet sites should be like this. Discord is an outlier in that good servers tend to not abuse their mod powers, since that is frowned upon in Sonic discord servers, while bad server will do so right out of the gate.

I have to warn the site admins this final warning on the concept of freezing threads on my own works: do not under any circumstances do that, for if you do, same with the abuse team, you'll be violating the rules by committing harassment. This's your final warning, if you do, you *will* be banned, same with the site owner if anyone of you does cross that line. I am saying this not to threaten, but to be safe, and to be safe to you.

    That's the problem. We're running out of places to go to freely post what we want. And the looming death of Section 230, assuming you follow what's happening there, is not gonna help matters at all.

      You could just make your own fic archive if you don't like the way AO3 is moderated instead of throwing a shitfit. Nothing is preventing you from "freely posting what you want" in your own space.

        Again, the problem is that people like me are running out of places to do so before that becomes impossible, not that you'd mind, of course. With the way the internet is being sterilized to weed out human nature being human nature, they are creating a society of insecure, incredibly pozzed, highly volatile wokies to practically run the site by siccing Policy and Abuse on anyone they deem a heretic to their religion.

        The problem is the Archive worked just fine until recent culture embraced crying over every god damned thing. Maybe some of us who have supported the Archive from the beginning thought it was fine how it was in most respects and having been around and/or donated for are annoyed at an onslaught of people crying "not good enough" constantly.
        Maybe some people are sick of the entitlement. Ever think of that?

        And some of us have been here from the start and have even supported the Archive from the beginning too and really like the new changes. You're not exactly special here.
        Maybe some of us are sick of your entitlement whining about changes being made by the site admins. Ever think of that? Sorry not sorry that websites aren't static and evolve with user needs. If the site doesn't match your need because they introduce a function that you don't even have to use, you can walk out the door.

        Lol, that really depends on your fandom. If you think every fandom is identical and everything across all fandoms are just wonderful and great nowadays, then I think you need to remove those rose-tinted glasses and have a better look around outside your slice of fandom. And why change it? Because AO3 thinks it needs changing based on their expanding userbase. Not every single user on AO3 or any website in fact have the exact same needs and your insistence that there's no need for change because you know best because you've been here forever is kind of ridiculous. If you don't think it needs to change so you don't have to use those functions.
        The rest of us also have the right to give our opinion. You go around saying everyone is entitled because they have a different experience to you, so we also have the right to give our opinion that you're being incredibly entitled by demanding the website never change and should only cater to your preference.

        As for your question, first, i'd assume the report is filed through the Policy and Abuse team, then they go and see if whatbwas posted violates the TOS. If it does, then it's up to them to tell them what the creator did that violated TOS so they can get rid of it if they want to keep their clean record on their account. If not, then nothing should happen. After all, "No Harm, No Foul", and the TOS accusations should be removed from the record since the matter would be resolved.

        There already are rules against harassment here. From your earlier comments, I'm not convinced that you think enforcing site rules isn't a curtailment of freedom of speech or whatever inconvenienced your discourse on some other site.
        I've already left my opinion on this update earlier. (I like it. Whatever.) Chances are that the ability for users to freeze threads on their work will postpone some reports (not necessarily a bad thing). It's another matter if the other person can't take a hint from that, which, again, is up to the user. Exactly how, then, do admins intrude by enforcing the abuse policy?

        I got to say, I'm not gaslighting you, never was infact. But they can wind up violating the terms of service, especially if a member has already told them not to contact that member, even the abuse team then is violating the rules by harassing a member- even in the course of doing their jobs they wind up breaking the rules, and so since their ability to do harm is greater, their punishment has to be far greater than they could possibly endure.
        The other things aren't bad advice, except that they're unethical advice, so they simply won't be used on my part. This's merely a response to your statement, out of sheer politeness to you as a fellow member. But you *did* comment on my response comment to that directly to me; so this is entirely justified on my part.

The difference between you and me is that I still remember that my work is for an audience, and I want that audience to give me feedback because that's how community works.     I genuinely don't get people who only write for an audience. I write for myself, because I feel inspired and feel the need to get the story out of my head. It doesn't matter to me if no one reads it. I post it to AO3 because I think maybe there's someone out there who enjoys it. If there isn't an audience for it and the story sits forever with zero hits, that's cool too. I certainly have no interest in getting ~critique from a stranger who I don't know or respect and whose opinion is worth absolutely nothing to me.

      I do as well. I fully realize whatever I write won't be everybody's cup of tea, and am fine with that. I have made my peace with that a long time ago.
      Writing is subjective; someone will love one thing, another will not. I was once told that writing will always resonate with someone, and it is true. That's good enough for me, I'm not going to worry about hits-to-kudos ratios, or counts. I write for the love of words and writing. People reading it is a bonus. Harassment is not the same as a negative comment. Luckily, I haven't had much trouble, just a few odd things - but from what I have heard others have and over-and-above of what should be.

      Because an audience, or at least the promise of one, gives us an incentive to work. Without that, people like me tend to procrastinate, and achive nothing.
      Should writers write for themselves? If they want to, sure. And if possible, you could even turn comments off altogether to make it blatently obvious that the only intended audience for your work was yourself, much like how Sonichu's intended audience was Chris-Chan himself, and not the reader...         But writing is something I want to do. And I WANT an audience because I want to make my craft for OTHERS. I want a reason to wake up, and continue my craft because if I don't, i'd be letting my fans down. I do not hold myself above others to such a degree as to give them a shit fanfic just to make them fuck off. As a writer, my job is to do one thing: ENTERTAIN.
        It's why I maintain that writers who only write for themselves are inherently selfish by nature because despite writing in a public archive, the archive, nor it's people are the target audience. It's the author, and only the author. The "good job asspats" that Thrawn, jfc, and I warn about merely serve to bloster these inherently selfish authors' egos, and the Freeze/Delete/Block abuse potential that is now a direct possibility, serves merely as a warning to any who endager their already inflated egos.

        Having an audience is very important, I agree - feedback and healthy, even heated, discussion too. Writing is meant to be read, and hearing back from readers means a great deal. Personally, I don't at all expect to have nothing but fawning comments, and delete any that are not positive.
        Blocking or freezing probably would be used only in rare instances of real harassment.

        I agree, because let's be real, even if you do the research to make your fic as lore-friendly as possible for that franchise's fans, there will always be those people who have a grudge with you as a person, and just want to start trouble... Even if they go after your fans to get to you.

        This sounds like a very good reason to install an option to freeze threads. If they go after your fans, you can simply freeze them out and leave your fans to comment in peace. Then they won't get chased away by harassment and be able to focus on enjoying your work.

We'll add it to the suggestions for the PM system - though as I said in another comment, that feature is still extremely early in discussion, because the ToS, harassment, and privacy issues arising from such a feature are immense. As for forums per se, we have no plans of adding such a feature, as we feel we do not have enough volunteer-hours to maintain and moderate them to the extent they would need to be moderated.

        Just in case you forgot what AO3 is short for, this is a fanfic archive, not a forum. It's in the name and everything. If you want fanfic authors to talk to each other, then you're in luck! We've been doing that since forever, including in the comments sections of fic posted here. Come to places such as Discord, Tumblr, or Twitter, even some DW blogs, and you'll see it in action. It can still happen in fic comments on AO3, just with more controls for the users like they would have on platforms such as Discord where you can easily block or mute anyone at all. I understand a writer of your status may not get any meaningful engagement, but I can guarantee you'll find that communication is happening between authors and their readers, and usually with gusto.

        Nope. Having the power to freeze the comments on a fic that isn't yours wouldn't make sense, and it'd kill the idea before it could be used responsibly.
        I'm talking about freezing comments from people because, idk. Maybe I felt lile making his/her day worse. I wouldn't really need a reason, and even if I did, who'd stop me?
        Maybe I felt like thining out comments, and an argument I had with somebody on a news section would make that person a prime canidate for getting the guillotine. Who cares if that person had a good point about my fic, or was a genuine fan? I'd be mad, and would want to make him pay regardless, and again, who'd stop me?
        That's the kind of abuse i'm talking about. The kind of people that would use the feature as a means to end criticism on the site altogether, and any discussion on the comments better be "approved" to the writer's likes, or they'll freeze/delete/block you to end any discussion you or someone else would have. It could also be used as a weapon to divide writers and cltheir communities if they ever happen to be in a feud.
        Instead of being one website, figuratively speaking, the staff have given petty, jealous, spiteful people the means to divide, and segregate communities into their own cliques like it's high school, hence my use of the word "preppys" because that mindset stems from that type of environment.

      forums and a pm system are a good idea yes, but i think you’re missing a key point of what Ao3_Support told you— lack of resources. this site is still in beta, has limited servers, uses donations to help it, and is run by volunteers.
      secondly, as others have said, this isn’t a social media site. it’s not really ao3’s job to mold the site into whatever would be convenient, because that’s not how websites work. a PM system, like what fanfiction.net has, would be quite nice, but remember that ffn doesn’t have the ability for people to reply to comments and so that’s mainly what the pms are used for. plus as Support said they’re working on that; it’ll just take a while to implement, which is understandable. the ao3 staff is doing incredibly with what limits they have.

        Well, the first part of your comment is why I stopped asking for a PM system yesterday. As for everything else, let's just say you may be the voice of reason here. After all, you've said it yourself, if anyone's gonna do it, socks and anons be damned, they will.
        However, despite that... I want to keep my comments where they are, mostly for context's sake as to why the comments section is the way is ended up being for newcomers. Otherwise, people might be confused as to who this Greenraccoon97 fella was, and why they can't see his comments anymore. Because some curious souls WILL want answers.
        But in the end, i'd basically be repeating myself at this point, so i'm just gonna concede until somebody tries to pick a fight, if that happens, i'm sticking around just to spite that person.

Deleting an obvious troll comment is not suppression. Brutal honest isn't called brutal for nothing; it is cruel and inconsiderate of another person. It might even discourage someone from writing. There's nothing wrong with tempering a criticism with a little courtesy. That's all people want -

Site admins will soon have the same options when creating and editing news posts. This will allow our teams to turn off comments on outdated news posts and prevent newer ones from being overwhelmed by spam (e.g. advertisements or, more commonly, short series of random letters left by bots).
If comments on a news post are turned off, or if you're logged out and comments are restricted to registered users, the comment form will be replaced with a message indicating which setting is in use.
Thank you for this! I've gone back to (very) old news posts looking for specific information and I've seen comments from, frex, 2016 on a 2012 post inquiring about specific things. I highly suggest that the Closed/Restricted Comments message include a link to the Support form.

If I may make a suggestion to the AO3 support staff:
I think it may be very fitting to test out the new 'freeze thread' feature on this comments section. It has gone far enough and there seems to be nothing more of substance to be added. Also, thank you for all your hard work.

Thanks for this update, and for demonstrating exactly how it seems to be functioning on the page 4 comments. :)
While I don't think I'll necessarily need this function, it's good to know that it's there if something unwarranted does happen in the comments section. How some users are wilfully misrepresenting shutting off an avenue that can be abused into a statement about being deplatformed and silenced, looks like we are back to LJ days: trolls and sockpuppets everywhere.

Yeah, I concur with the recent posts. At this point, i've already said whati've needed to say, and the preppy's who just want control have already outed themselves, so at this point, i've already won since they will no doubt bring the socks upon themselves should they make liberal use of the Freeze, Delete, or Block buttons, and I still maintain that they will, but that's beside the point.
The point is, this thread is dead, Jim, and the only way to get a point across now would be to test this new feature out for ourselves. Here's to the LJ days returning... whatever those were like.

  So silencing dissent via the site's moderation tools is bad and shouldn't be done, but silencing dissent by mass harassment and abuse via a sockpuppet army is acceptable?
  You realize that users already have the ability to moderate comments on their works by screening, deleting, restricting, and turning them off outright, yes? Where are the swarms of sockpuppet armies out to ruin everyone's time? Where are the tender, tender readers all meek and mild begging and pleading to not have their comments screened away?

Addendum to the matter on my previous comment, this one regards the site admins and the news posts; aren't the news posts their own works, specifically, and thus their call about such things as freezing the comment threads and the like?
Overall, I do not have the slightest doubt that they themselves are the creators of their own personal works on this archive, and shall not have any problem theretofore with the individual ones deciding things about posting comments and other matters to them about their works in question, as a neighbor and fellow member that is entirely expected on my part for them to do- that's not even remotely in question.
Where the issue came up is the idea that they might even get it in their heads to do things like freeze comments on *other people's works*, things they are completely bereft of any say on; *that's* about it, not the matter of this ability for all members, yes, logically including them themselves.
And as members they are bound to the same rules as other members, even moreso due to their higher place they are *more* restricted In what they are permitted to do, regarding other members, than average members are to be. But as members? Sure, I haven't any problems with that principle at all, never did, and rightly never will.
This's simply to clear things up about any objections I voiced.

  Yeah, the staff are not going to go around doing that. Why do I know that for certain? Because it would go against the Ao3’s (and OTW’s) very existence, which is to protect writers’ rights to write about transformative works (i.e. fanfiction). The Ao3 is there to defend a person’s right to write whatever they like essentially, without fear of it being taken down, or worse, sued by the original author of a major professional work. To simplify: they set healthy boundaries to protect writers like you and me. The writers are the priority.
  The idea, the thought, the hypothetical scenario of being victimized by the very staff on here runs contradictory to the mission statement. If anything were to be taken down at all, it would have to violate the ToS or get a DMCA takedown request.
  If this helps to alleviate some of your concerns, Section IV. H states the following:
  H. Illegal and inappropriate Content
  The Archive of Our Own is a place for fanworks. Content may not be uploaded to OTW's servers if it contains or links to child pornography (images of real children); warez, cracks, hacks or other executable files and their associated utilities; trade secrets, restricted technologies, or classified information; or if it consists entirely of actual instruction manuals, technical data, recipes, or other non-fanwork content, including non-fanwork creative work (refer to the ToS FAQ). Uploading such Content is a violation of the ToS.
  We may determine that we need to remove Content to resolve a threatened or pending lawsuit or mitigate other liability. If so, we will remove the Content. Unless said Content or data otherwise violates the ToS or was submitted by an Age-Barred Individual, removal for such reasons will not lead to a suspension.
  If you believe Content violates a specific law, you may report it to us. Please, however, read our Offensive Content Policy below.
  I. Offensive Content Policy
  As provided in part I.E.3 of the Terms of Service, the OTW is not liable to you for any Content to which you are exposed on or because of the Service.
  Unless it violates some other policy, we will not remove Content for offensiveness, no matter how awful, repugnant, or badly spelled we may personally find that Content to be.
  Edit: Forgot to mention that we, the writers, already have a feature that allows us to turn off comments altogether. The staff is not going around doing it for the author. That feature is already in use at the discretion of the author, as will this ‘freeze thread’ feature. It’s just an additional way (a healthy use of boundaries) for the writer to protect themselves. Again, the existence of the Ao3 is all about the writers—not commenters.

    *This* has effectively resolved the conflict, so long as the site authorities do keep to this... I shalln't have any objections to this policy of improving the site, as long as they stick to doing that to their own works, and not any member's works I am going to be fine with this idea.

I have a question that may or may not relate to this new change: does this change affect new comments from showing up in my inbox? My inbox was at 0, but then after a few days I realized I had 5 new comments on a new chapter I posted and didn't realize until I saw them manually; the new comments also don't show up in my inbox history.

  Sounds like either a bug or you have gotten your settings messed up somehow. I'm pretty sure you can turn off notifications for comments. Maybe check on that?
