In the coming days, we'll be rolling out a code change that limits the total number of fandom, character, relationship, and additional tags that can be added to a work. This limit of 75 tags will apply to both new and existing works, but no tags will be automatically removed from existing works.

Why place a limit on tags?

Having a limit on tags will:

help keep work blurbs to a reasonable length, improving the experience of navigating work listings, and
encourage creators to tag for the most important elements of their works, improving the quality of search results.

Why 75 tags?

We looked at all the works on the Archive and determined that:

the average number of tags per work is 17,
the most common number of tags per work is 11, and
less than 0.5% of works have more than 75 tags.

A limit of 75 total fandom, character, relationship, and additional tags per work will provide the vast majority of creators with enough space to describe the content of their works while also keeping work blurbs to a manageable size.

Why don't ratings, categories, and warnings count toward the limit?

Ratings, categories, and warnings already have limits of their own. A work can only have one rating, and the number of categories and warnings a work can have is limited by the number of options provided on the posting form.

What should I do if I notice someone's work has more than 75 total fandom, character, relationship, and additional tags?

Nothing! Works that exceed the tag limit do not violate the Terms of Service and should not be reported to the Policy & Abuse team or the Support team.

What happens to previously posted works with more than 75 total fandom, character, relationship, and additional tags?

Nothing! The work will keep all of its tags.

However, if the work creator wants to edit the work or add a chapter, they will have to remove some of their fandom, character, relationship, and/or additional tags before they can save their changes. (An error message will tell the creator exactly how many tags must be removed.)

Thank you! Given there are people here who want a smaller limit, and people who want a larger one, it seems like a good compromise!
There are good reasons to have freedom of expression in tags, and it is true that longer fics and certain fandoms will be more affected. However there are good reasons to limit tag number, for example for people with screen readers, and for clarity. Giving to one group takes away from the other, and 75 tags feels like a fair middle ground to me. People with long fic still get 75 tags but may have to remove some, and people with screen readers don't have to read through hundreds of tags but will have to put up with up to 75. Of course there's no perfect scenario that can make everyone happy, because AO3 is so diverse, but I hope more people will recognise that one person's needs may not be compatible with another's, and that's just life. We need to be able to compromise in a public space.

I assume that this will reduce the number of ficlet works that are like 200 chapters each with a drabble on it. That'll be nice, those are atrocious to navigate and should be either series or collections. Unfortunately, it means that those will migrate to a fic each, which will make lists of authors' works a bit more tedious to navigate instead. Would it be possible to get a way to group a series or collection such that in the profile work navigation area it only shows as one entry? Maybe something toggle-able so that you can choose to see all the little fics individually as well?

  With authors that have hundreds of fics I just browse by fandom and then thin down the results by excluding or including tags. But authors could do something like making collections to organise their fics (e.g. a collection for angsty fics, or oneshots etc).

    Absolutely. I am simply suggesting an additional filter, that will automatically group any collections or series. This will be especially useful once people stop posting fics that are actually series of drabbles.

      I second this idea.
      It would be great if in the general work overview there would be a possibilitiy to filter out all works which are linked in a series (working the same way as filtering for "all works"/"complete works only"/"incomplete works only" does right now).
      When I want to see only the works belonging to a specific series, I can open the series overview (I love this option, I use it regularly), but currently there is no possibility to see only works which don't belong to a series.
      It doesn't happen often, but there are some prolific authors I like who write mostly series with the occational one-shot thrown in and then it's *scrolling... scrolling... scrolling... "huh, almost missed that one!" ...scrolling... scrolling... "ah, another one!"... scrolling... scrolling......*

  I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly, so maybe I'm saying something you already know, but for a series, you can see all the works grouped together by going to "Series" in the author's profile and then clicking on the series. For collections, the filtering options are even better. If you go to "Collections" via the profile, click on the relevant collection and then go to "Works", you can filter within the collection in the same way as in the general archive.     Yes, this is all true.
    But imagine someone with 500 works in the same fandom, 300 of which are in one of 3 series, 200 of which are drabbles from a "fic a day" collection, and 100 which are one-shots of varying sizes. In this situation, it would be useful to be able to group the series and collections such that the list of works is 104 entries long - 100 one-shots, 1 collection and 3 series.

        Yeah no problem!
        I feel like perhaps a nesting setup might work best? Where you choose this sorting method to list only the grouped fics and single fics, each being openable into a table of contents with a click and then folded up again with a second click. I don't know how difficult that would be to code though, as opposed to just having a filter that returns only oneshots and series/collection hubs. Especially if one were to set the grouping setup as a default view when looking at someone's profile.

      I do agree with you that a feature like this could be cool, although I expect blocking etc is the dev's next highest priority (fingers crossed against forest fires and other calamities), but in the meantime I was just in a similar situation and dug up how to exclude series from an author's page using the filter sidebar: type "-series.title: *" in the 'search within results' box and viola! Now you can browse all the non-series works and then catch the series ones from the author's series page. (Though I wish that would show the summary of the first work if there isn't a series summary...haha if wishes were infinite.)

Why not just automatically truncate after a certain files length, or that number of tags, and let people expand? Would be so much better IMO, and wouldn’t bother people. This will just make people that really want to have it longer mash together tags into one so they’re just as long anyway.

  I've implemented that solution for myself with a skin, but I know that that's a poor option for accessibility, and isn't compatible with all devices. But it's very difficult for people on a screen reader to skip.

In my opinion, the tag limit should probably be higher -- like 500, or 1000, or some other big number like that where only people who are trolling would be affected and not any legitimate works (yes, I do count those multichapter oneshot fics as legitimate works, as they do actually contain fics and are using the tags they are in good faith -- no, I may not like them, but that doesn't mean that the authors of them have any less right to post their fics the way they want to than I do -- ao3 is all about freedom for the authors, after all).

    If you keep reading through the comments on this post, you’ll find a comment from me containing an idea that would solve the screen reader issue. Also, I find it very interesting that people only seem to be aware of the screen reader issue now, when they can use it as a “gotcha” against people who don’t agree with the tag limit. It makes it seem like they don’t really care about accessibility, but instead care about proving that they’re right (which, the use of accessibility issues in that way is frankly a bit insulting to me as a disabled person who sometimes needs to use a screen reader).

      Yeah, this. Most of the people here commenting here likely don't use screen readers, just given laws of averages, and while I am all for making life easier for people who do -- with two legally blind people in my actual real life, including my actual real life roommate -- using it as a bludgeon against people who have legitimate concerns they're bringing up is pretty lousy.
      There are ways to make things easier for those who rely on screen-readers and also on big-fandom-longfic authors who find 75 tags a bit too tight. Not that I think anyone high up in OTW is listening -- frankly -- or that anything will change, because frankly, that's not how power works. But saying people can't bring up their issues with it in comments is also kind of lousy.

One of my readers just pointed this out to me and I have to say I've very disappointed by this decision. The tag system is the best thing about this site, so to limit that is to immediately start making it less attractive as a place to post and search for fic. As it is, I can already have trouble finding the type of fic I read as people aren't tagging them properly, so I think we need to encourage more tag use, not less. I don't know about others, but I never go to a fandom page when looking for fic, I use the tag system. Especially to avoid pairings I'm not interested in reading.
I can also see that this will result in authors of longer fic having to deal with a slew of people complaining that there weren't enough 'trigger' warnings on their fics. If you do fic of 100,000 words or more, then you generally need a lot of tags as there will be a lot of characters and pairings, then there will be a lot of stuff covered, which requires tags. When you start to hit fic that's over 200,000 or 300,000 or more words, it only increases.
Did you consider allowing more tags for fic of certain word counts? Or only allowing official tags after a certain number of tags?
And where can we direct people who will complain in the future that 1 scene in a 400,000 word fic wasn't warned for that would have before something like this was implemented? The tags were the perfect compromise between spoiling events and ensuring people had their warnings as those who wanted to avoid certain things could look for it or exclude it from fic searches.

    And spoil the scene? No, of course not. As a reader I hate it when that happens. Nothing puts me off a fic more than having the suspenseful bits spoiled ahead of time, that's just awful.

      Many people put detailed warnings in an endnote andalert the reader in a note at the top that that's where they can find them

      The point is: there are many ways to give readers the option of knowing about specific possible triggers. In fact it's *helpful* to separate warnings for recurring or pervasive potential triggers (in the tags) and those that are limited to only a small portion of a long story.

        You can't run exclusion searches on fic if they're not in the tags.
        In my experience, people are more worried about stuff that happens in 1 scene rather than recurring things. As the latter tend to fall into overarching story arcs and so will often be at least visible in summaries.

  Personally I find that more tags makes it harder to find fics I'm interested in. I'll search for fics about a minor character but so many fics will have tagged when that character only has a few lines. Or I search by kink and get lots of ficlet collections where apparently that kink turns up somewhere in 400,000 words, but I have no idea where, or with what ship. It was a lot easier on ff.net to find fics centred on minor characters because there were only 2-4 character tags.
  I've seen people tag for 'additional warnings in notes' and then have a list of warning or a summary of potentially triggering content in the endnotes. That works great because people who don't want to be spoiled don't see it before reading the fic, and the author can warn for content that isn't substantial enough to tag. Tags are advertisements as well as warnings, and I find this is a good compromise to avoid disappointing people looking for that content.

    I find what you mentioned works poorly as those notes don't allowing for searching. So they are only seen by those who have opened the fic, and there's nothing worse than doing so and being confronted by a complete spoiling of all the suspenseful bits of the fic right there at the start. It pretty much means I just move on to another fic. No point reading something I already know the outcome of? Having it in the tags is awesome as it's searchable and no one ever reads them all, so people who want to avoid something, can exclude it in their searches, while those who don't want to be spoiled, aren't.
    As for the first bit, it's never been a problem for me. I search on the minor character and the type of fic I want to see and I generally get a very manageable number of fic. I might just know how to word what I want to see. My biggest problem is finding fic that has only listed the 1-3 main characters and nothing else. It's like FF.N where it's a nightmare to find fic to read, which is why I never go there anymore when looking for fic.

      No, you put them in the endnotes. So you don't see the warning in the author's notes at the beginning, you just see a link saying 'read more in the endnotes'. So normal readers will only see the warnings after they read the fic, or if they click the link to the endnotes.
      I'm glad the tagging works for you. For me though, when I'm searching by tag I'm looking for fic focusing on that thing. But for example, searching for Bruce Banner will bring up lots of fics where he appears in a scene or two only there as a cheerleader or emotional support for the real main characters (who I don't want to read fic about). It's incredibly hard to find fics where he's the main character. So many authors tag for things/characters if they are mentioned or only appear in a tiny moment, and that's disappointing as someone searching for that thing.

        Are you saying that seeing a link to the endnotes is spoiling the story, but seeing the tag isn't?
        I've never minded the endnotes and have never been spoiled by the existence of them.
        Unfortunately explanations aren't going to do much about people using tags like that. If you see people tagging for everything, and adding an infinite number of tags helps 'advertise' your story by showing it to more people, then no wonder people do it.
        That's why AO3 putting in a tag limit, same as tumblr only indexes the first 10 tags, because it forces people to identify the focus of a fic, and therefore makes those tags more useful for people filtering the tags. Elements that aren't the focus of a fic can be put in the author notes.

        I deliberately don't look at the tags. I use them to find fic, but once I've got search results, I look at the summary and things like story length and completion status to decide if I want to read it. The search will already have excluded anything I don't want to read if the authors used the tags right. Beyond that they're really easy to skip as they're so different from everything else.
        Can't speak for tumblr as I've never used it.
        Guess you use tags very differently from me. It's the only way I find fic as the fandoms I'm currently reading in most are massive and so finding the good fic about what I want to read is hard.

  Agreed. I have a 100,000+ word fic (which yes, is in the minority already on this site) which is over the tag limits. There are fandom specific warning tags on it (requested by my readers!) so they can chose whether they're going to risk reading the fic. They don't make much sense to non-fandom readers and they're not searchable as a result, but they're there so that someone who is in fandom can make an informed choice. It's also a super complicated fic with a ton of canon characters and lots of tropes and identities which need to be separately tagged so people can search or exclude according to their preferences.
  Also agreed about spoiler/trigger warnings. The tags are a much better place to put them and don't spoil scenes right before they happen (and if only people would tag for stuff more often).

    I think a collapsing of tags that redirect to the same thing would be a better place to start. That isn't clear when authors are selecting tags and would help reduce numbers without more drastic measures!

This is a great change. For people who feel they need more than 75 tags, you can always add a tag to "check the author note" or "check the first chapter" and dedicate some space within the fic itself, but before people get to the actual content, to extra tagging space.

    If you write a very particular type of fic, then you tag for that very particular type of fic. Not for all the other types of fics, or types of fic your fic might resemble slightly if you squint. You also don't need ten different tags to say there's, for example, angst or Character X in the fic.

        And what if the obscure element is only one part of a much longer story? Fics that run to the hundreds of thousands of words will cover a lot of ground, even if you only hit the big points. They will also have a lot of characters and (likely) pairings. So they're going to be the ones hit the worst with these rules. There should have been some allowance for that.
        Or they could have done a better job curating the tags, there are lots for the same thing, if they made that more clear, or collapsed them down, then some fics would use less.
        This will hit people with triggers worst as authors will exclude warnings for smaller scenes in larger fics and so those readers won't be able to exclude search for their triggers.

        And this is where I keep saying the author's notes are an excellent place to add additional tags and details - for example, you can tag 'PTSD' and then go into detail about the various kinds of PTSD you might encounter within the fic so you can make an informed decision. That's one tag, but with multiple definitions and explanations. If the author doesn't provide that, well, that's not the fault of the site for having too few tags. Most authors tend to be very good with authors notes. I can count less than 20x I've been triggered over the last 25 years of reading fanfics, by reading the warnings and authors notes, and backing out as I recognize what may or may not be upcoming. At some point, you have to accept that surprises can and will exist in writing.
        How do you determine how to read a book at the library or buy one at the store? You read the synopsis. There aren't 75+ tags on the back of the book to warn you about all of your potential triggers, and yes, I'm saying this as someone with multiple triggers. I scan the tags, and then read the author notes before I decide whether or not the fic will trigger me. Good authors update each chapter with additional warnings so I can decide whether or not to continue reading it.
        Like I said, if you need more than 75 tags to determine if the fic is right for you, some people might be better off skipping it in general. I am not saying this to start a fight - rather, if you have that many serious triggers, you need to be super-careful and possibly either skip fics rather than risk it, or contact the author (if possible) and ask directly. I've seen people post about fics on tumblr asking about triggers that might be in them as they don't trust the tags. There's lots of ways to protect yourself when reading that don't involve hundreds of tags clogging the system.

        I guess you're luckily, I know a great many people who have either left fandoms or now only read fic that other's have personally recommended. I personally pass on recs to 5 other people who have been triggered too often to risk going into fic blind anymore. Good sites help to cater those as well.
        In my experience, most authors are very good with tags, so why are we punished everyone for the actions of a few?
        As for me in a library, I look for very different things. With fic I'm looking for stories about specific characters I loved in the movies and want to read more about, often in specific circumstances. In the library I'm not doing that. I'm looking for entirely new things, at most I'm looking for an area like mythology. If I want more specific, I do searches ahead of time online and then see if the library has the book(s) in question.
        I'm not speaking of my triggers, I luckily don't have any. But I've been blown up on by readers when I couldn't add a warning for something on other sites with limited tags.
        Good authors update each chapter with additional warnings so I can decide whether or not to continue reading it.
        While your opinion of what constitutes a good author is interesting, it's hardly pertinent. Others will say good authors put the relevant warnings in the tags and don't string readers along before letting them realize they wasted their time as they can't finish the fic. Both are correct depending on what each person thinks a good author is.

        Personally, if I'm looking for a particular obscure tag, I would much rather my search results weren't full of much longer stories which only briefly included the tag I was searching on. If that obscure element is only a minor element of a much longer story, that story is not what I'm looking for.
        This will hit people with triggers worst as authors will exclude warnings for smaller scenes in larger fics and so those readers won't be able to exclude search for their triggers.
        It will hit people with certain triggers. If you have a trigger which isn't one of the things which people consider standard to warn for, you're already in this position – it's inconvenient, but not an insurmountable problem. And even for common triggers, already there's no standardisation about what authors tag for. If you really absolutely need to completely avoid any mention of a particular trigger, relying on authors to tag it is already not a reliable system.

        It's often exactly what I'm looking for as there aren't always many fic of the type I want. Then I'd like to find all of the ones that are out there.

        I don't see that as a good reason to make the system worse.

        So actually, you can use the 'Search within results' box to search the author's notes. You can even exclude works that mention a keyword in the notes. Click the ? button next to the search box to learn more about it.

      Doesn't help if a very particular type of thing is addressed in a bigger fic. Some of us will read long fics that incorporate certain things, even if that element is only a smaller thing in the grander scheme. We have to if we like something that isn't popular in the wider fandom as a whole.

        Then you fit that tag into the 75 tags your fic can have. You don't need to tag for literally everything your fic contains. Pick the most important things and tag those, and don't use ten different tags to say one thing either.

  Currently there is no built in option for that on AO3.
  There is the possibility to create a site skin (or expand on one you already use) that minimizes the Tags field (the whole Tags field, with an added scrollbar). You have to be logged in to use the skin and it won't help if you use a screen reader though because the tags are still there, they are just in a field that takes up less space on your screen.
  Smiling_Seshat (amongst others) has made a wonderful guide how to add a site skin and the necessary code: How to: Block fanfics/tags/users & Hide too-long tag fields
  The explanation for minimizing the Tags field is under the header "Extra features" in chapter one and chapter three "Limit visible fandom tags with scroller" explains how to also minimize the field that shows the Fandom tags.
