“999, what’s the address of the emergency?”
“Oh, thank god, hi, I- I don’t have an address, my boyfriend and I are, we’re stranded in… the forest? I don’t- I don’t know where we are, we’re at a rest stop out here and there was a payphone, my boyfriend is injured and- and we need help, is there a way to, um, to trace the call?”
“We’re tracing it now. Is your boyfriend there with you?”
“Y-yes, he’s on the bench behind me right now.”
“In what way is he injured?”
“Um, h-he, there’s a knife wound, in his chest, under his right shoulder, I stopped the bleeding and cleaned and bandaged it, but he’s still- he’s lost a lot of blood, we need- we need help, he’s…”
“Okay, stay calm, we traced the call, there’s a search and rescue team on the way.”
“Okay, o-okay.”
“Is your boyfriend awake right now?”
“L-let me check.”
[muffled] “Jon? … Yeah, yeah, it’s gotten through. … Yeah, they are. Hang tight, okay?”
“He is, yeah, he’s trying to stay awake.”
“He can still talk to you?”
“Y-yeah, he’s, um, he’s hurting, but he can talk, he’s awake.”
“Alright, good, we’ll have officers there in half an hour. How are his pulse and breathing?”
“I- I checked his pulse when we stopped here, it wasn’t- it was closer to normal, and he was, er- he was breathing slowly when I was stopping the bleeding, b-but it’s evened out now, yeah, it’s- it’s evened out. I- don’t think he’s in shock, he’s, he’s cold but he isn’t, er- he isn’t panicking or anything.”
“Good, okay, can you run through what you did to stop the bleeding?”
“Um, yeah, I- I put pressure on it, for- I want to say f-four- four minutes? Cleaned it out, just had water over it, had gauze and bandages to wrap it with, and then when he could- could get to his feet we walked here, he’s sitting down now.”
“Okay, if it bleeds through the bandages, add another layer. Keep him awake the best you can, if you have an extra jacket to keep him warm, use that. If he falls unconscious, monitor his breathing, and perform CPR if needed, do you know how to do that?”
“Y-yeah, I do, h-have practice.”
“Great, alright, and what about you, are you injured at all?”
“Oh, m- me, no, I’m fine, kind of scraped up but not bleeding too bad, I’ll- I’ll be okay-”
“Well, if you have first aid and your boyfriend seems stable, I suggest that you take a minute to clean those, we don’t want them infected.”
“Okay, I- I will.”
“Good. And what’s your name?”
“Um, Martin, Martin Blackwood?”
“Alright, Martin, the search and rescue officials should be there soon, both of you stay calm. I’ll stay on the line if you want to leave the phone off the hook while you go check in on him, or just call from the same line and I'll be here.”
“Okay, thank you again, y- you said around half an hour, right?”
“Half an hour, they’re on their way right now, you stay right here.”
“Okay, I’ll- I’ll go give him my jacket, I’ll call again if anything happens."
