Chapter Text

The next few days were interesting.

Despite the lack of Anakin's memories of who people where, and where things were supposed to be placed, his memories of how to hold things such as a saber were still perfect.

"You should take it slow," Obi-Wan cautioned as they circled around each other, toes curling in to the mat that was underneath their feet in the training ring.

It was the middle of the afternoon, and the warm sun streamed in through the windows, casting everything in a pleasant and gold light, catching the light of Anakin's curls, and the front part of Obi-Wan's hair in just the right way.

"Right," Anakin said with a nod, and then unclipped the saber from his belt, spinning the hilt in his hand as if he had been handling the saber for his entire life- which he had, but he didn't remember that.

However, it seemed as though his body still did.

Obi-Wan watched as Anakin held the saber in his hand and set it on training mode- without even needing to be told to do so, with a sad smile.

He wasn't sure what to say.

For some things, it seemed as though he needed to tell Anakin explicitly what was going on, who these people were, or what to do.

And for other things, he could leave Anakin alone, and be completely blown away at how quickly he was recovering... from everything.

And while Obi-Wan knew that progress was not linear, it was still frustrating, fascinating, and everything in between to watch as Anakin would go from hardly being able to get out of bed to being able to stand in front of him, a curious expression on his face and his saber raised.

“Ready?” Anakin asked, with a smirk, and it was so hard for Obi-Wan to not make some kind of remark, some kind of joke about a past experience about something that they had done before, because he knew that Anakin wouldn’t remember it.

Instead, Obi-wan nodded, and watched as Anakin took the first step forward.

Despite not remembering much- he knew that the Force still guided him, and Obi-Wan watched as how Anakin seemed to grow more into his old self.

His old moves came back, and while Obi-Wan knew them, because Obi-Wan had taught him many of them, he wasn’t sure if Anakin was remembering them himself, or it if was the Force, whispering them into his ear.

And then, suddenly, while Obi-Wan was lost in his thoughts, his legs were swept out from underneath him, and Anakin stood over him, his saber pointed downward at his chest.

And then, they both just blinked and stared at each other for a moment in complete shock.

Anakin faltered after a moment, unsure of what to do, and that was when Obi-Wan realized that he had forgotten most of the sparring customs that happened after when one was victorious, because since losing his memories, Anakin had only watched others spar.

“Are… you alright?” Anakin asked tentatively, in a manner that painfully reminded Obi-Wan of the same way that Anakin would ask him when he was having a bad day shortly after Qui-Gon’s death.

“Fine,” Obi-Wan replied with a sigh as he got up, in the same manner as he did then.

Anakin didn’t remember that exchange being the same way it had all the way back then, but Obi-Wan did.

“I’m sure Ahsoka will never let me hear the end of this,” Obi-Wan muttered and Anakin laughed, but quickly stopped, and then the two of them looked at each other.

Obi-Wan didn’t remember Anakin’s eyes being that intense, and not that they weren’t before. But now, they seemed as if they were looking through him, and not just at him. And he didn’t think that was just a product of their new circumstance.

“You seem distracted,” Anakin began as they started to walk together.

“Who else are you thinking about?” He asked and Obi-Wan blinked.

“How did you know I was thinking about someone else?”

Anakin shrugged.

“Just a feeling.”

“Where did you get these plants?” Anakin asked as Obi-Wan came back into their common room.

Obi-Wan sighed heavily, and Anakin reached up to touch one of the leaves that was hanging by the door towards the balcony of their apartment, when he looked back at Obi-Wan.

“You’re thinking about the same person from earlier.”

“You are as perceptive as usual, Anakin,” Obi-Wan replied dryly.

“Did I know them?”

“Yes.”

“Where are they?” Anakin asked.

“Dead,” Obi-Wan replied softly, and Ankain looked away from Obi-Wan and back at the plants, dropping his hands.

“It was a long time ago.”

“Have I asked you about this already?” Anakin asked after a moment, looking back at Obi-Wan.

“Yes,” Obi-Wan replied with a sigh and a sad smile.

“The same person who found me,” Anakin said softly.

“The same person who trained me,” Obi-Wan whispered.

“I should have remembered,” Anakin muttered darkly, disappointed in himself.

“These things take time- for you, you’re learning all of this information for the first time,” Obi-Wan pointed out.

“But I’m not!” Anakin exclaimed, turning back to face Obi-Wan.

“I should know that Ahsoka doesn’t like caf, or that you take yours black, or that Master Windu likes theater or-“ Anakin stopped himself, his voice cracking.

“Anakin.”

“We have all lived together and known each other for years. The fact that you are able to regain this much knowledge about all of us so quickly, is remarkable. You should be proud of yourself.” Obi-Wan replied as he began to walk over to where Anakin was standing.

“You spent years studying, training, working on your saber technique, and you disarmed me today.”

“You were distracted,” Anakin pointed out.

“Regardless, you still caught me by surprise.” Obi-Wan replied.

“How do you feel about your progress?” Obi-Wan asked and Anakin shrugged.

“I feel like I’m missing something. I’m not… I’m not getting something that I should be.”

“It will come in time, my friend.”
