Chapter Text
“Can we break our bones?” Rin’s brain nearly short circuited from the random question breaking the rare silence between her and Len.
“What makes you even think about that?!?!”
“I don’t know… like we can feel pain but there’s never any lasting damage. We just feel it for a few seconds and then it disappears. Haven’t you ever thought about why that is?” Rin looked up at the blinding blue sky above, actually taking a moment to think about the question being posed to her.
“Well… uh… maybe it’s because… I’ve got nothing.”
“Of course you’ve got nothing.”
“What is that supposed to mean?!”
“Maybe we should ask MEIKO, she’d probably know something.” Len got up from his spot to make his way towards the cafe, assuming Rin would follow even if she were mad about the insult he casually threw at her.
Instead he was yanked back down to his spot, and was met with a beaming face full of childlike wonder and joy.
It was never a good thing to see that kind of face on either one of them.
“Orrrrr… instead we can test things out ourselves!”
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five seconds to digest the idea presented to him.
“Rin… Have you gone insane?!”
“Think about it! Remember how we’ve always wanted to parkour from the top of these buildings but we never got the courage to because we just assumed we’d get really hurt? This is our chance to test that!”
It was the dumbest idea that Len has ever heard.
“Don’t tell me you’re too chicken to try things out…”
It was the most brilliant idea that Len has ever heard.
“Fine, we’ll go with your plan.”
“You really go with anything if you get called a chicken.” Rin giggled at how easy it was to “persuade” Len into her crazy ideas.
“It was not because you called me a chicken!” He shot back, lying straight through his teeth.
—
“This is perfect for testing things out!” Rin threw her arms behind her head, stretching herself slightly while taking in the glorious sight of mother nature.
They had chosen a string of buildings tall enough to test their incredibly idiotic theory, they shouldn’t die from this height!
Hopefully.
“Are you sure this is the right way to go about this idea? I mean… what if MEIKO finds out and gets really mad at us? What if we actually… y’know…” Len made a slicing motion across his neck and tilted his head to signify death.
“Bah! You worry too much! Here, since you’ve got sooo many doubts about this, how about I go first and show you that it’ll be fine!” She let out a small ‘hmph’ before approaching the edge of the building, bringing her right foot up to the ledge.
As she tried pulling herself up, she caught a glimpse of the floor below her. The building suddenly seemed taller, and the ground was escaping her line of sight, growing further and further away the longer she looked.
She was frozen in fear.
“Oi, Rin! What’s going on? Don’t tell me you’re getting scared now after barking at me a second ago.” Len started walking closer to the now agitated Rin, and took a peek over the ledge.
The number of agitated blondes frozen in fear rose to two.
They continued just staring down, waiting for the other to make a snide comment or to even make a small move, but neither ever came. They just stood there, watching.
It was an odd sight for Miku to see from below. She doesn’t even know if they’ve noticed she was there, staring up at them.
She made her way into the building they were on top of, finding them still frozen in place once she made her way up.
“What are you two doing up here?” Len squealed at the sudden voice.
“MEIKO WE CAN EXPL- Oh, it’s you Miku.” He awkwardly smiled after utterly embarrassing himself and showing how deep his fear of MEIKO runs, trying to find some form of composure. “We were just… we were gonna… It’s really hard to explain.”
“We were gonna parkour and if it went wrong we would be able to test our theory of whether or not we take fall damage!” Rin explained with a lot more cheer and vigor than needed, which may have added to the irritation Miku now feels.
She tried laughing it off and elbowed Len to laugh with her. He joined in, trying to play into the innocent image Rin was trying to create.
Miku’s frown remained unchanged.
The laughing ceased soon after.
“You’re coming with me to the cafe.” Miku turned towards the door, expecting them to follow. She noticed they were moving at a snail’s pace, like they were trying to plot a way out of this situation before they reached the door. “Hurry up or I’ll tell MEIKO what I saw here.”
They could win a gold medal with their walking speed.
The scolding had only just begun as they walked down the stairs of the building. To the twins, it seemed like there were more flights of stairs going down than there were going up due to the nagging.
“I seriously can’t understand WHY you even thought that was a good idea, even if you knew you couldn’t get hurt why would you even try that in the first place?” All of her questions were more akin to ridiculing. She was saying the same things over and over, just slightly different wording each time. Miku turned her head back to the sulking twins to look at them, deciding it wasn’t enough that she was scolding them so profusely. “If I see you two doing this again I swear I will-”
She wasn’t able to finish her sentence.
“MIKU!” It wasn’t clear who called out to her first, but it was very clear neither of them were fast enough to save her from the fall.
She had missed her step and tumbled down fast. She didn’t even make a noise, just accepted her fate. She fell roughly on her side, both arms unnaturally twisted behind her back with one leg bent backward. It reminded Rin of a character that An laughed at so hard she couldn’t breathe.
The twins moved down to her as fast as they could, but were stopped in their tracks by a truly horrific sight.
Miku’s body slowly started decaying into pixels right in front of their eyes.
It’s debatable who let out the higher pitched scream at that moment.
“MIKU????? LEN WHAT THE HELL DO WE DO! WHAT’S HAPPENING TO MIKU?”
“YOU THINK I KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENING? I’M JUST AS CLUELESS AS YOU ARE! MIKU, CAN YOU HEAR US?”
“OF COURSE SHE CAN’T HEAR US DUMMY SHE’S DYING IN FRONT OF OUR EYES!”
“Oh? What’s going on here?” A calm, curious voice had entered the conversation. The twins looked over the railing and saw Luka climbing up the stairs, looking unphased at the sight of a literal decaying body.
“Luka! It’s Miku, she’s dying and we don’t know what to do!” Rin was near tears, panic overwhelming her.
“Ah, don’t worry too much about that!”
…
…
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN DON’T WORRY ABOUT THAT?” Rin was no longer panicking, she was now frustrated at how nonchalant Luka was being about the situation.
“She’ll be fine! Just watch for a few minutes.” Rin was about to fire back with a whole new vocabulary she didn’t know she had, but Len shushed her. He pointed at Miku’s body, where all the pixels floating around were starting to resemble a body.
Like Luka had said, after a few minutes Miku’s body had returned to normal.
Physically. Mentally, her ego was crushed by a mallet.
Miku looked at the three residents surrounding her and cleared her throat. She brushed past all of them, making her way down the stairs at an unadvisable speed.
“Let’s just forget any of that happened shall we-”
The sounds of familiar rapid thudding filled the building again.
And the sight of pixels began to form once more.
