Chapter Text
‘Why aren’t we married?’
Cor has no idea what brought this question about, but Nyx seems more exasperated than genuine so he doesn’t worry about trying to come up with a real answer. ‘Paperwork,’ he replies, not looking up.
Nyx snorts, but doesn’t seem offended.
~
‘Why aren’t we married?’ Nyx asks, sighing in pleasure at the warm meal Cor has just put in front of him.
‘The weather,’ Cor replies, looking outside at the snow that hasn’t let up since the day before and is the reason Nyx is still at his apartment and not his own quarters.
~
‘Why aren’t we married?’
‘Drugs,’ Cor responds, waving to the IV in Nyx’s arm. It seems to be a good enough response for the man as he falls back asleep to recover from his nasty fall.
~
‘Why aren’t we married?’ This time it’s Cor asking after Nyx executes a move during their spar that Cor can’t help but admire and ends with Nyx perched on top of Cor with kukri at his throat and Cor, frankly, quite turned on.
Nyx smiles down at Cor, clearly feeling the evidence of the direction Cor’s thoughts have gone. ‘Company.’
~
‘Why aren’t we married?’
‘Too early.’ Complained at the alarm clock.
~
‘Why aren’t we married?’
‘Fraud.’ Nodded sagely as though that makes any sense. After a few more rounds of drinks than planned.
~
‘Why aren’t we married?’
‘Clarus.’ Scowled at the office door said reason has just departed through.
~
‘Why aren’t we married?’
‘Too late.’ Grumbled as they both fall into bed after a long joint mission.
~
‘Why aren’t we married?’ Whispered to the empty apartment that Nyx returns to when he can’t stay past non-family visiting hours for Cor in the hospital.
~
‘Why aren’t you two married?’
‘Regis.’
‘Tax evasion.’
The automatic response comes from both Cor and Nyx before they register that it’s Prompto asking. They both take a moment to blink at each other before laughing rather than explaining the joke to Prompto.
~
‘Why aren’t you two married?’
‘Insurance.’
‘Niflheim.’
~
‘Why aren’t you two married?’
‘Field work.’
‘Movies.’
~
‘Why aren’t we married?’
Cor’s immediate response of ‘Undercover,’ is drowned out by Prompto’s, ‘Because you’re both cowards,’ after which he raises an eyebrow at them both and leaves Cor’s office.
Cor and Nyx both watch him leave with some surprise, but Nyx speaks up quicker than Cor. ‘And to think I was excited that we had managed to skip the angsty teenage years with our son.’
Cor exhales a laugh. ‘Just because you skipped that portion doesn’t mean he did.’
Nyx turns around to grab something in his bag, laughing. ‘Why aren’t we married?’
‘We should be,’ Cor responds this time, and he counts the seconds for it register with Nyx. It takes six. ‘Want to be?’
Nyx turns slowly, and Cor sees him holding a ring box. ‘You asshole – you just had to beat me to it didn’t you?’ After a beat, ‘How long should we wait to tell Prompto that he missed out on being here for this by about ten seconds?’
~
‘Why are we married?’
‘Children.’
