Chapter Text
By the time morning rolled around, neither of them had awoken, which could be seen as a blessing or a curse. A blessing, being so comfortable within the closeness and trust of each other, a curse because they might miss the bus to school if they don’t get up soon. Truly a horrible dilemma neither of them knew about, too wraparound each other, literally. Muichirou, who tucked his knees to his chest and wrapped his arms around the wolf’s middle, was trapped by Genya’s hug, having his legs bent and safely securing the other within his reach. They both slept soundly, unknowing of what they’d be greeted with in the morning.
Even though they were asleep and had no care in the world, other creatures stirred. Those said creatures, being the younger siblings. It was truly a baffling mystery of how someone, or something, could be up so early and so full of energy already. Perhaps it was because they were younger and didn’t know the hardships of life yet, the only hardships they’d ever known was getting their toy taken or their favorite crayon or colored pencil breaking. Maybe it wasn’t something that small for all of them currently as their ages ranged, but they’d all definitely had gone through something as universal as that.
Their small feet patted and stomped around, running and walking around, signaling that if you weren’t up already, you needed to be. Such noises weren’t normal for the vampire tucked between the werewolf’s arms, so he stirred. Muichiro was… quite confused, so say the least. This wasn’t his room or his bed, and why was someone hugging him? Being too early in the morning coupled with his memory issues, it took him a hot minute to understand everything that was going on, before it all clicked in his brain. He had a sleepover with Genya and slept in the same bed with him. His first sleepover, and he already had bed privileges, which was an honor in itself. He flushed at the thought of being gathered within the wolf’s grasp for an unknown amount of time. He actually slept well that night unlike others he’s had, too.
He felt that light airy and ticklish feeling in his stomach, what was it described as again? Butterflies? Maybe, either that or moths, the creatures were quite similar physically. His sleep-ridden body began to move before he could even think, hugging the body in front of him closer. He didn’t know exactly why he had done that, but it felt right. Maybe because he was cold? No, that didn’t seem to fit really, he felt warm enough. Whatever the reason was, he wished he could stay like this longer, he wished they didn’t have to go to their classes today. Maybe they could both just skip, but then again, he doesn’t know how Ms. Shizu would feel about her son skipping just because his vampire friend wanted to sleep in longer. Muichirou already knew Sanemi’s answer to the situation, and it wasn’t pleasant to say the least.
Though, instead of being in some rush to get the day started, he decided to let his dream last a little bit longer, lying within the warmth of another. The vampire peered up at the other who was still asleep, awestruck at just how at peace he looked. The imperfections showed through while he was sleeping, making him just look more… ethereal. The creases in his skin from his almost constant furrowed brow, his nose being slightly crooked, along with his smile being uneven. And that scar, the one that mapped across his face made the picture complete. He himself is Genya.
The rhythmic beating of their hearts pounded within Muichirou’s ears, finding himself snuggling closer to the other until his head laid on his chest. He was never like this with anyone, never. Yet the sound of the sleeping wolf’s slow and deep sleepful breathing drew him in more. Could he ever be this comfortable, as comfortable as the sleeping werewolf? Muichirou knew it wasn't a matter of could, maybe a matter of would, but he hoped it would be a matter of when. Though, one thought persisted in the little vampire’s head.
He wanted to touch Genya’s scar.
He wanted to thank and then beat up whoever or whatever gave him this scar. Thanking them for simply making him look this beautiful, but more so beating them up because how dare they do such a thing to such a sweet person. He wanted to gently cup his hand under Genya’s jaw and caress his scar with his thumb, noting down how it feels, whether it’s soft or rough, seeing how it translates to the skin around it. He wanted to press down to see if it was squishy like some scars, or hardened like how heavy wounds scar over sometimes. Others would objectify him for his look, or even assume he’s bad news, all because of this astonishing scar he had. But in reality, it drew the vampire in, he didn’t know why, but it was one of his favorite things about the person he was cuddling with.
The vampire hadn’t really realized how heated up his face had gotten, until it was too late. Breaths caught within his throat, making him practically choke on the own air he breathed in, along with his mouth being dry and hearing his heart pound in his ears and throat. Was he sick? This could be the only possible answer, he always got a fever when he was sick, and this felt similar. Yet he didn’t feel as… slow processing as he was when he was sick, when he was more air-headed than usual. He shouldn’t question it, but he so deeply wanted to.
His inner conflict was soon interrupted by the pounding on Genya’s bedroom door, which caused the next series of events; the vampire to jolted and smack his head on the other’s under jaw, then causing the wolf to yelp and wake up alert, sitting up quickly as he looked around. This led to the two seeing they were still clung together like magnets, staring at each other with a shocked and dumbfounded look. The younger pups were concerned by the yelp so they barged in, seeing the less than ideal situation in front of them. They all gasped, some squealing, and one running downstairs yelling for her mom. In this moment, much like magnets, they scrambled away from each other as if they were both the same face, wanting to save the embarrassment for themselves as Genya’s younger siblings started singing some rhyming tune about kissing in a tree.
But deep down, they didn’t want to separate, no matter what cost or torment the younger kids put them through, even if they were singing cheesy rhymes about love and marriage.
It took both the teens a minute to recover from what they had just gone through, though Genya went and immediately shut the door and locked it this time. He thought he had locked it before, but maybe he was mistaken, either that or his siblings used their mom’s bobby pins again. He groaned before he walked back to his bed and sat down on it, both of them refusing to look at each other. Genya was messing with his hands, face flushed and burning practically while Muichirou found comfort in staring at the stars on the ceiling, his face also quite red still.
“Sorry-“ they both said in unison, further causing them to both cringe at the fact they were in tune. Genya decided to get up from his bed and sit down next to Muichirou, the vampire only looked at him as the werewolf sat his hand down rather closely to his own. Muichirou wanted to reach out and grab his hand, he always found comfort in holding onto someone else. The wolf’s ears were pulled back a bit, the silence between them was comfortable enough, they both enjoyed that fact. But the matter of fact is they were gonna be late to school if they kept this up, so the shorter looked at the taller, offering a small smile, to which the taller gladly accepted.
“We should get ready for school unless we want to be late,” Muichirou spoke, gently snaking his hand to the other’s clawed one and holding it in a lose grasp. Genya flushed slightly at the scandalous act of hand holding, like he wasn’t the one suggesting it in the first place. “You’re right,” he groaned, dreading going to school because, well, it’s school, who even likes that? The vampire humored him, chuckling at the groan, making the taller of the two smile and sigh happily.
Maybe it was worth going if Muichirou was there with him.
As the two separated, they both started their mornings by getting ready with haste. They needed to eat as well beforehand, so they were rushing quite quickly to get ready whatever they could. Muichiro was the first to be done changing, wearing his regular baggy hoodie but this time paired with shorts. Sure, he hadn’t worn shorts to school before, the only thing he was worried about was getting dress-coded because they were, in fact, quite short. The vampire made his way out of the bathroom and waited outside of Genya’s room, only to be greeted by the tall werewolf around a minute later. He was dressed in a dark purple jacket, a different one from his hoodie, some pop culture t-shirt of a masked black and white killer, and to top it all off, black cargo pants fitted with a studded belt and boots. They sure were some sort of weird pair, fashion wise anyway.
Muichirou smiled at him as he came out of his room, deciding to grab onto his arm that was safely secured by his hand being in the jacket’s pocket. The wolf was dumbfounded by the lack of pants worn by the other, not sure if he’s ever seen Muichirou in something so… well, “revealing”, for him, the vampire had never worn shorts to school that he knew of. He probably stared at the other’s legs for too long, longer than “just a friend” ever would, and for that Genya metaphorically kicked himself.
The vampling looked up at the other, being greeted with the neutral faced wolf, though the vampire could hear the rustling of his tail wagging. “Since when did you wear shorts? I’ve always seen you with pants,” the wolf chuckled as he talked, starting down the stairs with the shorter still attached to his arm. “Hmm, well, I don’t wear them too often really, obviously,” the shorter of the two spoke, “but I guess I’m just comfortable wearing them, wanted to change up the style, you know?” Muichirou spoke lightly, his voice overall more lively around the werewolf. Genya didn’t say anything back, trying to process what his friend had just told him, so instead he hummed. He was comfortable around him? Genya gave a small smile at the thought, his tail wagging faster than it was before.
Though, it was short-lived as his siblings picked up on even the smallest things, starting to “oooo” and pointing at him giggling. The vampire picked up on the pup’s antics, though he wasn’t quite sure what it was about, but he giggled with them anyway as he held onto Genya’s arm tighter. This in turn made the wolf flush more, ears drooping lower on his head than usual. The poor big bad wolf was embarrassed.
The embarrassment was short lived, though. “Oh you troublemakers, give your big brother a break,” said a woman’s voice from the kitchen, recognized to be Ms. Shizu. She was making breakfast for everyone, which was a monsterous amount of scrambled eggs and toast. Of course, some of the kids ate cereal, though, judging by the empty plates, most preferred the eggs and bread. So there the two took their place at the table, waiting for breakfast to be served so they could be on their way.
After they two were served, they ate quickly and took the rest of what they didn’t eat with them. They were supposed to ride to school with Sanemi, or on the bus, but both had left before they even had the chance to get on for a ride. So here they were, switching between speed walking and running to school.
“I’m glad I wore shorts today, running with pants would’ve been harder,” the vampire commented, the wolf just nodding in response. Genya thought to himself about how she should have shorts in case a time like this came, since his baggy pants only caused him to overheat, as well as other problems with mobility. Though, he was grateful his stamina was well and in check. They both talked about whatever came to mind, although, slightly winded when they got to the campus. That was when they were greeted by a familiar face.
“Hey guys!” The cheery voice spoke as it approached them. The voice made Muichirou quickly let go of Genya’s arm he held onto practically all morning, remembering where they were. He forgot how people treated him at school hanging around a werewolf. Though the cheerful voice was no threat, as it was Tanjiro.
The maroon haired teen stood and waved to them both, Muichirou finally noticing the longer claws and scales he had on his hands. “Sorry if I startled you both, I didn’t even realize you guys were friends,” he spoke genuinely kind and sweet, nobody could hate him, really. The vampire took more time to study his kindhearted friend, now noticing the few scales that little red his face and small horns atop his head. What exactly was he?
Well, his question would be answered next as Tanjiro made a noise and stepped to the side, revealing a more lizard-like person behind him. “I forgot, Muichirou, I don’t think I’ve introduced you to my sister Nezuko!” The teen looked at the smaller girl, puzzled by her species. She looked like something out of a video game, respectfully. She had bread in her maw, mumbling as she spoke, the small fin looking appendages on the sides of her head wiggling about. Muichirou waved at the black and pink scaled girl, and in return she waved back, a tail behind her swaying a bit. Besides her unique appearance, she wore the same uniform as everyone else.
“What species are you guys?” The vampire asked curiously, looking between the two. Tanjiro beamed at the question asked, bouncing on his heels a bit. “People don’t ask that often! I’m glad you did!” Genya looked like he had seen this before, which he probably had, Muichirou assumed they’ve been friends longer since Tanjiro gave a hint of knowing him when he greeted the odd pair. “My family and I are Dragonborn, though as you can see, some of them are more than others.” The teen with redder scales spoke, putting a hand behind his head. His little sister chirped at the recognition, humming excitedly as her balled fists raised and waved around a bit.
“Dragonborn? I’ve never heard of that species before,” the vampire spoke, quite interested in the topic, even if it wasn’t shown much physically. “Yeah, I’m pretty sure they’re uncommon at least! And we own a bakery, though I’m sure you know that-” Genya playfully groaned at the topic on hand, Tanjiro paid no mind to his fluffy friend as he continued to talk to Muichirou about his life and how easy it was to bake stuff when your siblings could breathe fire.
Though, the conversation quickly ceased as the five minute warning bell rang, giving the students a chance to get to their classes in time. The odd group, consisting of a werewolf, vampire, and two Dragonborn of varying degrees, walked into school together, conversing on whatever quick and random topic they picked up on. Though, when the time came to split up to their destined classrooms, they all bid each other goodbye, saying they would meet up for lunch.
Today had started off great for the four, and now Muicihirou was actually excited to have math for his first class of the day since he had something to look forward to.
