Chapter Text
Kate bishop’s apartment present day;
‘So you’re saying there’s a multiverse’ Kate asks realing forward, almost in disbelief.
‘like a multiverse multiverse, and your friend Monica, who’s captain marvel’s neice… just by the way, got stuck in another universe? Like another universe?’
Kate begins almost pacing now ‘this is crazy, I gotta tell Clint about this, wait maybe he already knows?.. Do you think we already knows? If he does and he didn't tell me I’m gonna be sooo mad at him’
Kamala nods her head along, slowly wondering when Kate’s sentence will finish and taking careful note of each question to answer.
Finally kate stops talking..
Kamala draws in a big deep breath and begins
‘To answer your questions, which there was a lot of, yes there is a multiverse, yes it’s suppper coool, yes Monica is captain marvel’s niece and yes all three of us are a super badass bff team, appropriately named.. The marvels! And yeah it is kinda crazy, and no I don’t think Clint Barton expert on all things arrows knows about the multiverse and finally, is it infinitely cool that we both have avenger mentors? yes yes it is!’
Kamala draws a furtive and sharp breath finally finishing her monologue of a sentence smiling excited.
‘honestly can’t believe I got through that in one breath’ Kamala mutters to herself
Kate and Kamala share a knowing look then almost laugh at each other.
‘I’m getting the sense we’re both rambling a lot’ kate laughs ‘so this team you said you had some feelers out there?’
‘Yeah a few, there’s this girl, honestly she’s the main goal, according to her file she might actual be able to multiverse jump’,
Realization dawns on kate, ‘And that’s how we get your friend Monica back’
Kamala smiles ‘That’s the hope, but there’s barely anything in her file, no name, nowhere abouts, no indication, virtually nothing, so for now she’s not a ghost till we can gather more intel”
‘You mentioned someone ealier, Ant-man’s daughter?’
‘Oh yeah, Cassie lang’ Kamala begins to bring up her file
‘Cassie’ kate says thoughtfully
‘Here this is her’ Kamala holds up the screen to kate who’s immediately is drawn to it, she takes the ipad, Her face difficult to read as she begins carefully scrolling through the file saying nothing.
‘Yooo, kate bishop, earth to kate, are you good?’
‘Yeah, no it’s just I know her, I mean I’ve met her before’
‘You know her, how? Kamala looks shocked
‘Errrr a few months ago, I might have been laying low on the west coast for a while after the track suit mafia mayy have put a hit out on my head, and I errrr miiigghhtt, have had a minor run in with the San Francisco police department..’
Kate gives an awkward smile which Kamala reciprocates.
San Francisco a few months ago;
The deep unrelenting burning in Kate’s eyes was like nothing she’d ever experienced before as she tried desperately to get a clear view of the scene through her streaming eyes and the thick growing cloud of tear gas.
She had been watching the peaceful protest in quiet solidarity when the police turned up, within minutes they’d began using tear gas and batons to clear out the scene.
As she saw one elderly homeless lady being shoved to the ground by a cop twice her size, Kate knew she couldn’t sit around and do nothing, so she’d ran into the chaos without any thought. Helping people, running into action, it was instinct but little could have papraped her for the insenisty of the burning in her eyes, the pain in her throat, the restricting feeling snaking it’s way around her chest.
For a few seconds when she’d first ran in the smell was almost sweet but it only took a few breaths and it felt as though the air had been knocked out of her lungs, like her throat was being pricked by needles and her eyes burned so much it was hard to see.
Through tears she saw the scene unfolding, some protesters running or backing away to still be tackled by police, and the throwing of more tear gas canisters. She found her vision begin to focus again as she scanned the crowd relief flooding her as she spotted the old lady. She took off running again weaving through the chaos.
Finally she made her way over to the elderly lady, who was struggling to get up back up
‘let me help you’ she placed her arm around her helping them up and guiding them away from the crowd, she sat her down on a bench.
‘Are you okay? Do you have any pain anywhere?’
‘No, just my eyes’
‘Just your eyes, em okay, okay’ kate began rummaging through her back pack frantically, relief glossing over her eyes as she wrapped her hand around what she was looking for, she took it out retrieving a water bottle.
‘Here I’m gonna poor this in your eyes this will help hopeful wash it out okay’
The lady nodded and kate began tentatively pouring. Again she looked out to the chaos of the scene noticing now how the officers were beginning to march forward with batons and shields, there were protesters who just simply couldn’t get out of the way in time, she had to act fast.
‘Keep using this it’ll help, I’ll be back okay’ the person nodded, knowing they were okay, she sprang back into action
Kate needed a distraction something that would work to slow them down and fast., she swore at herself for not taking her bow with her, then the solution dawned on her, she took a small ball shaped item out of her bag and began running over to the police and without thinking she threw the ball in the cops direction… to which it flung through the air with great force and hit a officers shield and…bounced of…
‘Oh shit!.. you know I really thought that was gonna wwork’
Kate began slowly backing away, one of the officers shot her a terrifying look. A light on the arrow head at his feet began flashing red.
‘Err look officers.. I think this has mainly been a big misunderstanding am I right?
Almost on the instance of her finishing her sentence the device went off covering half of the entire row of officers in a purple putty stopping them instantly and comically as many of them bounced out of it or were froze in place like a old roadrunner cartoon.
‘Yess! Putty arrow head to the rescue! That will mostly dissolve in half an hour boys, but it tends not to wash out, so you might want to scrap the uniforms’
Kate’s smugness didn’t last long as without warning she felt the most striking sensation through out her entire body, like her veins were set alight with needles, and then she was on the floor. She looked over to the officer behind her who had a gun like device in his hands with cables protruding out.
Kate groaned
‘So.. that’s what it feels like to get tasered….can confirm not fun’
She dropped her face into the ground giving a lazy thumb up
She looked over to the officers more of them now ready to start a new assault.
‘grreattt there’s more of you’
Just as kate began to panic at how she was going to help the protesters as she was currently incapacitated, the strangest thing happened…the police cars vanished or at least they appeared too, or rather they began shrinking so fast one after the other in an instant, it was impossible to tell. kate laughed as the cops began running over to the vehicles in pure panic. The scene was truly like nothing she’d ever seen, and kate had seen a lot of strange super hero shit recently.
The local jail the same day;
“You can’t arrest me for protecting peaceful protesters!! That’s not proper cause or whatever” Kate shouted out as the cell door was slammed shut in her face.
“But they can arrest you for assaulting multiple police officers I’m afraid”
Kate turned to see a brunette girl behind her with an impressed smile on her face and a subtly cool air about her.
“Ah please, my putty arrow is less dangerous then the tear gas and the taser they used on me”
“No kidding, that was some badass tech, hilarious too, buttt still a hundred percent a arrestable offense..but hey seems everything gives them probable cause anyway, so if you’re gonna get arrested you might as well do it with style’
The girl winked ‘but you might wanna try a more.. subtle approach next time, try thinking.. smaller”
Kate smiled
“Kate” she offered her name
“Cassie” she smiled back
“Seriously though that was so bad ass”
“Thank you, I try” Kate began rubbing at her eyes again, the adrenaline from the shock of the taster wearing off, the stinging began setting back in.
“Have you rinsed your eyes with anything?” The Cassie asked with care
“I haven’t had a chance and they took my water bottle”
“Come over here”
Cassie guided her further back into the cell then held out the palm of her hand, in it was a tiny water bottle, like that for a doll.
“Er Cassie, I don’t think that’s gonna be enough water”
“Just watch”
Cassie clicked something in her other hand and within an instant the water bottle was full sized.
Kate stared in shock
“How did you? Pym particles? Waittt, think small, the shrinking police cars.. that was you!”
“Shush don’t shout about it”
“Sorry, sorry, my lips are sealed, but that was so cool you’re, you’re awesome!”
“Lannngggg” a booming yet higher resistor voice chimed out interrupting them as the door was opened by a officer who Cassie shot a smug smile.
“That’s my que to exit, I’ll see you around Kate” Cassie said, handing her the water bottle.
Kate smiled at the girl in impressed bewilderment as she eventually passed out of sight down the hallway.
Finally around an hour later Kate’s name was called.
As she entered the reception she expected Clint’s disappointed (I’m tired of this shit) dad face, but she saw no one was there waiting for her, kate looked around confused.
“Wait who posted My bail” Kate asked the receptionist who didn’t so much as give her a glance but absently handed her a paper slip under the glass barrier. Kate took it and walked away.
‘You could be politer you know’ she stated as she excited the station
In the fresh air she opened up the note, it read;
Dear,
Hawkeye vol 2, I thought I recognised you, I saw you’re stunt at the rockefeller center at Christmas on the news, you’re a total badass. I convinced my dad to lend me the money for your bail, (he might think it’s for a community collage class so don’t tell him) I like you, if you ever need a favor or superhero team up again, here’s my number,
Cassie
Kate’s apartment New York City present day;
Kate begins to walk out of her kitchen.
“Where are you going? I’m pretty sure that’s like the way to the storage closet?” Kamala watches kate with a perplexed gaze.
“To call a friend” kate says with nick Fury intensity.
“Aw! I thought the dramatic recruitment moment was my thing!”
