Phantom at UA

Chapter 2: not so lively Live Broadcast

Notes:

Today's my 20th birthday! The doctor from my birth said I won't last four weeks, so here we are!

Chapter Text

Jazz was annoyed - she now could understand why her brother had no issues to just leave them to go to Japan, then again she said herself he would be an idiot to reject such an offer - her parents were difficult to convince to watch the broadcast. To be fair, it was late at night. "Mom! Dad! You often work even later! And you attended one of my events at Midnight! Why can't you do the same for Danny?" Then they agreed.

So it came that the rest of Family Fenton, Sam Manson, tucker Foley and Valerie Gray were sitting late in the night in front of the TV - Tucker managed they can receive Japanese TV signals - waiting for Danny to appear.

"I can't believe that school feels the need to showcase a student event on TV." nagged Sam's mother. After Sam told them about the night stay with Jazz and Tucker, her parents were surprised to hear that Danny attends a Japanese Hero school and demanded to see as well. At first, they also demanded that they watch at their house, but they won't allow Tucker to tinker on their TV set up, so they put up with the Fenton House.

The broadcast started with Nezu speaking. "What is that mouse thing?" asked Sam's father. "Some mascot?"

"That is Nezu, Danny's Principal. He has an extreme intelligence quirk and is even smarter than us." said Maddie, still slightly salty that Nezu managed to find an error in their machinery while he visited them to discuss Danny. Maddie then noted something. "Are that subtitles?"

"Of course, or can you understand Japanese?" answered Tucker. Now read carefully."

Jack realized why. "Phantom is there, too? Danny-boy has the perfect chance to catch it!"

"Dad! Stop calling Phantom an it! And Danny can't exactly go after a school mate. Now focus on Danny, Nezu talks about him." said Jazz to her father.

"Oh? He had top scores on the entrance exam?" commented Pamela "I didn't knew he was able of such feets." Sam rolled her eyes.

"I am more curious what Nezu means with Phantom. Does it-he have a secret identity?" wondered Maddie.

She didn't notice that Ida - Sam's grandmother - shot her an offended glare. 'No wonder the kid left to Japan with those parents.'

"I am so proud of Danny! He gets to hold a speech!" said Jazz happily.

"Albeit a short one." commented Ida. "His Japanese sounds fluent, but what do I know."

"When I called him last week, he accidentally spoke Japanese to me for five minutes." told them Sam. "I will never let him live that one down." He does the same with the Ghost Language. But unlike Japanese, Sam can, to some extend, understand Ghost.

"Hero course? Danny can't be in the hero course, he is Quirkless!"

"Late Bloomer, mom." said Jazz. "Hadn't he told you? No, haven't you noticed? Danny has an ice quirk! For a while now!" When Overgrowth attacked, Danny discovered his ice ghost core. He decided to pretend to be a late bloomer - or how it is really called, a false negative - and pretend he got a ice quirk.

"You didn't notice that?" said Ida.

Her daughter in law added, whispering to Jeremy, "They are bad parents." He agreed. What parent doesn't notice when their kid suddenly has a quirk, especially if they were thought to be Quirkless for a decade? He and Pamela noted Sam's plant quirk the minute it kicked in. To be fair, Sam turned the green house into a little jungle, that was hard to miss.

Then the race started. And instantly froze. "Huh, Danny told me a class mate of his has an ice quirk, but that is a lot." said Tucker. "Wait, some of it glows! That is Danny's Ice!"

"Two ice users in one class?" asked Ida.

"Well, fire and ice, Todoroki kinda has two quirks." said Sam.

"A person can''t have two quirks, Samantha." said Jeremy. "He probably has a fused quirk that seems to be two. Oh my, this Bakugo boy is aggressive."

Sam was considering if she should tell him what Danny told them. She decided against.

Soon the Cavalry battle started. Sam and Tucker took a closer look to Danny's group. "So that is Pony? The girl he told us about?" commented Sam. "Her horns look heavy. Ah, she can make them fly."

"I'm more interested who the dark haired girl is." said Tucker.

"Tucker!" complained Sam.

"Oh my, he has quite the Ice quirk." said Ida. "Your friend will be a great hero one day."

Pamela asked the Fenton's, "How did you not notice that your son got an ice quirk?"

"I suppose we were just busy with our work." guessed Maddie.

"Oh, that looks painful." said Jack, as they saw how a kid with engines in his legs got knocked down from the air with Pony's horns.

"If you say so, Mrs. Fenton." said Pamela

"Oh, is that the dual quirk kid?" asked Ida. On the TV, a massive flame blasted the ice sphere. "The ice doesn't melt."

"Yeah, Danny's ice can't melt." explained Jazz. "At least we have yet to find a fire hot enough to melt it."

"Impressive." said Jeremy.

Then Bakugo attacked, only to knock against a shield. They then saw that Pony used her horns to transport Bakugo down.

Soon the fights began. Danny's first match was against the kid with the engines. It was over as soon as it started, which caused Tucker and Sam to laugh. Valerie commented, "Don't be so mean, that slip looked painful."

"Danny got way better using his quirk since he came to Japan." said Sam.

The next fight was against a kid with a bird head. The Fenton parents gasped when they saw how Danny turned into Phantom. Nezu said something in Japanese they didn't understand. They ignored the subtitles.

"Danny... is Phantom?" said Jack.

"That explains why your boy got an ice quirk around the time Phantom used that ice power on that plant ghost." said Jeremy. He then looked to Sam. "I suppose you knew he was Phantom?"

"Mm, yes." admitted Sam.

"Look!" said Tucker. "Is this seriously what he meant with shield trick? Boring!"

"Mm, it makes sense that he beats them with ease. Ghosts and first year heroics students are on different levels." said Jazz. "Hey, if I understand this tournament correctly, does this mean he only has one match? That he is in the finals?"

"Apparently." said Pamela

They silently waited for that match to start, the parents still processing that their child is Phantom. A Ghost. They know it can't be a quirk, all their quirk detectors reacted to Phantom!

Then the battle started and they saw the explosive kid again. They saw that Danny and the explosive kid talked, but not about what. Just that the blonde was very aggressive and attacked, only to drop into portal, made by Danny. He came out of a different one, outside the battle field.

"Oh, Danny won!" cheered Jazz.

"If he wins with ease like that, I hope he doesn't become so arrogant like some heroes." said Pamela

"We'll see when he faces real villains!" chimed Ida in. "Unless those are also easier to beat than ghosts."

"Wait a minute." said Valerie. "Wasn't 1-A of UA the class that got attacked by villains? Danny's class?"

Notes:

Next week: Jazz and co watching that shit on TV and seeing how Maddie and Jack react to, well, everything.
