Revolution Radio, Operation No Control

Chapter 4: Hic Sunt Dracones

Summary:

It’s been quite a while since the Shredder has vanished. The newly appointed leader of the Foot Clan is trying their best to tame the ongoing gang wars. Our mysterious radio, too, is once again introducing a new face, one that does not trust the Foot of all people to keep the city safe.

file description: transcript of the first broadcast showing the radio hosts’ intimate knowledge of turmoil amongst the criminal factions controlling the city from the shadows. A new voice is introduced, rough and deep, with a distinct Brooklyn accent.

> transcript begins.

“Hellooooo my muchachos! Do I have a treat for you all to-day! Othello the science guy couldn’t make it to the studio, as his most recent experiment blew up not only in his face, but all over his lab, just outside of it, and in the face of our dad who was just about to walk in! So our poor poor ‘Tello is currently busy with cleanup!”

“Probably already thinkin’ of a new machine to destroy the house with.”

“Heheh, yeah– So, today I wanna introduce you to my otherbrother bearing the curse of being a middle child–”

“Get on with it, chucklehead.”

“Hey, don’t be rude, or I’ll get you kicked out of the studio!”

“Yer ‘studio’ is so full of garbage I could hardly get in and I’m still decidin’ on whether I wanna be here at all.”

“Aaanyways! This is the spiciest chip in the pack, El! [ uncertain of spelling ]1 He keeps an eye on our less friendly neighbors, so he’ll probably make an appearance occasionally to update all you lovely folks just going about your day on whether the streets are safe! What do you have for us today, El?”

“Uh– Right.” [ a shuffling of paper can be heard, presumably notes. ] “So, you guys know the bozos that call themselves Purple Dragons? They’ve been real trigger-happy lately, desperate to not lose territory, and they’ve been duking it out with Big Tony’s guys pretty much every night, especially downtown, an’ I’ve already had to help a poor sucker or three to the hospital cuz’ they got caught in the crossfire. So make sure ya stay off of the streets after dark, and if you an’ a friend are walkin’ the same way, keep each other company. And don’t try to play hero!! We’ve got people better suited for that.”

“Like the Turtle Titan!!”

“Or the heroes with actual superpowers.”

“Hey! Turtle Titan has superpowers!”

“If I have to have this argument again, the brainiac's gonna have way more to clean up than just his doorway.”

[ pause ] “The point is, let heroes do the heroic stuff, and keep yourselves safe!”

“Yeah. And if you see a purple dragon tattoo, walk the other way.”

“Or the Foot clan sign, for that matter!”

“And, speaking of nutjobs with too much power, just yesterday me ‘n’ my bros got caught in a shooting at the Super Slam hockey game in Central Park. You’ve probably heard it on the news already, but take it from someone who was there, it was real scary. No one got shot as far as we know, but a lotta people got hurt.”

“Our friend had to dig us out from under rubble!!”

“Yeah. Turns out, some rich asshole named Arboost wanted to hold the Golden Puck ransom, and was willing to risk lives just to get his own hockey team. So this is a reminder that rich guys suck and ‘nother reason to be wary of Saki Industries. Don’t let the bling fool ya.”

“Fun fact I’ve discovered while reading up about this guy, apparently George Arboost inherited his money from his grandfather, Wallace Arboost, and any time he is put in charge of anything, it crashes and burns spectacularly! He used to have a ranch and got sued for animal abuse because he refused to take proper care of the horses, he wanted to fund his own championship and absolutely burned through his budget. ‘Burned’ as in ‘hit rock bottom and dug deeper.’ And then he lied about it to anyone who would ask!”

“So let’s not give this maniac any more projects to sink into the ground, especially not a Super Slam team.”

“We’re of course biased, 'cuz that game was AWESOME!”

“Oh hell yeah it was!”

“Shoutout to our pal who invited us along, and who saved the Golden Puck!”

“Looove knowin’ celebrities.”

“Normally, I’d say goodbye here, but because we’ve still got time before the inevitable doom of our history lessons, I’ve got a little surprise for you, my listeners, and for you, too, bro!”

“Oh yea?”

“Yea! Check this out!”

[ something heavy is dragged across a surface - possibly a box, or a drawer]

“…woah. When did you have time to collect all these?”

“A lot of them are Angel’s, actually. She said she liked the radio idea and she’d give me all these in exchange for an interview! So… you could start with her!”

“You know, that’s not a terrible idea. Hey, we should probably explain– Mikan over here just pulled out an absolute treasure chest of CDs. It’s got everythin’!”

“Uhuh! But, El, the surprise is… you get to pick the song we close the episode with!”

“Huh? Oh! Oh, wait, really?”

“Yea! I think I’ll start playing music, since this is a radio and we need more good vibes around here, so you can start us off!”

“How’s about…” [ there is a short pause as El presumably looks through the CDs ] “...this one, then!”

“...you edgelord.”

“Hey! I thought I got to pick! Are ya gonna criticize every guest’s pick, you jerk?”

“Heheh, no! Just yours!”

“Oookay, we’re done here. Play the music, before I sock ya in the face.”

“Byeee, listeners! Enjoy my brother’s edgelord taste, hahah– hey, no, wait, watch out for the mic–

[ the conversation cuts off here. Bring Me To Life by Evanescence plays. ]

> transcript ends.

> notes: 1 this could also be L., an initial, but it could also be “Elle,” a name, although since this host’s voice is masculine and Mikan refers to him as a brother, it would be quite odd to use a traditionally female name for him. More information is required before we can clarify the spelling, so for now, the “El” option will be the default for these transcripts.

This broadcast brings up some concerning questions – how do these people know so much? Most anyone involved in gang activity knows to keep their mouths shut and their bosses certainly do their best to keep their secrets well hidden, is the station host bribing someone? Are they perhaps employed by one side of the conflict?

And, perhaps most importantly: are they safe, sharing everything they know like this?

Notes:

∙ the shooting is a reference to s2e18 - The Golden Puck

Also, uh, surprise!! I actually had this chapter finished wayyy way back, but I didn't wanna post it until I finish the next one. Sadly, I have since become more invested in the AHC AU, but I still get very kind comments on this fic, so I figured, the least I can do is give you guys the one finished chapter I've got. Other than that, if you like this fic, I do recommend subscribing to it, because, even though it's on the backburner right now, I do have a ton of notes and half-finished chapters I'd like to eventually work on. So.. updates not soon, but perhaps somewhere in the future! Thank you all for leaving such sweet words on here, it means a ton to me!!

Notes:

∙ this chapter has no specific time placement except that it is sometime during the City At War arc, when everyone's antsy after the Shredder's defeat.

Feedback is massively appreciated!!
