Chapter Text

It was indeed not a one time thing. Yet another month had passed in this world with Sonics frustration slowly growing. Nimue had told him that she was coming up with a way to get him home, but it seemed to be taking a whole lot longer that what he anticipated. Which was…fine. Yeah it was fine, she’s probably just busy. That what he’d been telling himself as day after day dragged on.

His patience was wearing thin. There was only so much to do and see here and as much as he had a fun time, he was ready to his friends, the ones who knew him as sonic, not ‘you’re majesty’ or ‘sire’. He missed messing with knuckles, hanging with Amy, and goofing around with tails. He missed seeing shadow every once in a while. Sparing with him, talking with him, hell he even missed their arguments over nothing.

Don’t get him wrong, he had fun with the knights and the other tails but…it wasn’t the same. He didn’t like the feeling of being so, revered? Respected? He didn’t know, he just didn’t like the feeling of being the boss of everyone. It make his stomach kinda turn in a way he absolutely did not like. Plus being king was hard.

Saving the world wasn’t always a cake walk, but it was fun and seeing people finally breathe a sigh of relief when the smoked cleared always made him feel a spark of happiness and pride, but this was different. He had people’s lives in his hands but not just for a split moment. He had to think about the prosperity of an entire kingdom. How were people living, did they have everything they need? If they didn’t, how could they solve that? It was so mentally taxing.

All these frustrations were bubbling up, making it almost impossible to keep them down. It was weird— he was way more agitated than usual. Little things were pissing him off. Being woken up too early, not having what he wanted for breakfast, not being able to spar whenever he wanted, wearing that stupid fucking cape ect. Everything was just getting under his skin. He was way more antsy than usual, which by itself was kinda insane. Just the other day he had snapped at Galahad for the crime of…asking him if he wanted to have a seat. Yeah, not very cool and he did apologize almost immediately but it was just so unlike him to do something like that.

As the moon came closer to being full, the more agitated he got. He was walking down the hall, thinking about just going back to Nimue and (respectfully) asking her to pick up the pace, when he ran into Lance. Sonic immediately felt himself frown. Him and lance had been pretty…distant lately, kinda like he was avoiding Sonic. Well to the best of his ability, he was the kings appointed knight after all, but still. Avoiding him. Which was yet another thing that pissed Sonic off to no end.

As Lance stepped to the side and bowed to him Sonic found himself stopping right in front of him. He stares at lance for a second, “So what? You gonna ignore me now too?” He tried his best to sound like he was just joking but it was clear by the look on Lances face that he had kinda missed the mark.

Lance stood up fully and cleared his throat slightly. He wouldn’t meet Sonic eyes which pissed him off even more. “Sire, my apologies. I had to intent of ignoring you.” He bowed once more and sonic rolled his eyes, “Quit that.” Sonic crossed his arms, tapping his foot in irritation. “What going on with you man?” He huffed cause lance to frown deeply.

He stepped forward a bit looking into Sonics eyes, “Your majesty I assure you, there is nothing wrong. I have noticed you’ve not been in the best of spirits. I believed some space would be of help. I see now that I was wrong in my assumption.” Sonic scoffed, “Uh yeah dude you were way off.” He put a hand on his hip. “You’ve been acting off ever since I transformed. If you’ve got something to say then just say it.” Sonic knew he was being combative for no real reason but he had to let it out some way. Besides, he knew Lance could handle his attitude. Lance stared at him for a moment, before looking down, a bit embarrassed. He stayed quiet for few moments before sighing again, “I… I still regret hurting you.” Sonic’s face dropped at Lances confession.

Seriously? That’s why he had made a complete 180? “Lance I already told you that it’s fine. You didn’t even know it was me.” Sonic probably sound a lot more mean than he intended. But hell, he was exasperated at this point. Lance looked to him, his frown deepening, “It still plagues me to know that I, your most trusted knight, attempted to snuff out your flame.” Sonic forced himself to bite his tongue in that moment.

There was just no way to get it through lances thick skull that he had no reason to be this upset. “Okay well, that doesn’t mean you get to avoid me alright.” He wiped a hand down his face feeling a little drained suddenly. Lance nodded, “you’re right as always sire, I apologize for my behavior.” He bowed once more and Sonic gave him a lopsided smile. He reached out gently patting Lance’s shoulder, “Of course man.”

Sonic was irritated, but he didn’t really have the energy to argue about it anymore no matter how badly he wanted to. He walked off towards his room wondering why he was feeling so drained all the sudden. As he went up the stairs he noticed that the sun was setting. That…that’s couldn’t be it right? Nah it wouldn’t be. It was probably because of all the anger he was feeling. He’d just sleep it off and hopefully be in better spirits tomorrow.

As the sun set and the moon hung high in the sky Sonic woke up with a start. It was that feeling again. The deep chilling sensation in his chest. So yeah, definitely not a one time thing. He tried to get out of bed quickly but this time he was transforming fast. His body would not cooperate with him, falling to his knees as he tried to get out of bed. He gripped his quills tightly, trying his best to to fight through it. He didn’t even realize how much noise he was making until he felt a pair of hands touch his own, which still had his quills in a tight grip.

He lashed out swiping wildly at whoever was touching him. “Your majesty ‘tis I, Lancelot.” Sonics eyes snapped open at that and he looked to see it was really was Lance, kneeling in front of him with a deep concern in his eyes. He grimaced and tried to speak, “L-lance…go…” Lancelot quickly cut him off, his voice harsh. “Nay, I shan’t leave you in the position. Who knows what you may do.” Ouch that kinda stung but was still pretty true. Sonic was barely able to control himself like this.

As his transformation completed he found himself completely slumping on the floor. His body was exhausted but his mind was racing. Why was this happening again? What was causing this? He just couldn’t understand why this was going on. “Your majesty…” he looked up to see lance standing in front of him looking concerned. He growled slightly, not sure if he wanted him to come closer or stay back.

Lance took a small step forward, “your majesty are you alright?” Sonic just snorted at him because it wasn’t like he could talk anyways. Lance sighed and nodded, as if he completely understood what that sound meant. He stayed silent for a moment before stepping a little closer again, “I do believe that you should stay here. Until you have shifted back to your usual form.” At that sonic sat up. No way in hell was he staying cooped up in the small room all night. He was much larger than before which made the room feel smaller. He felt cramped already. He growled loudly to show his dislike for that idea.

Lance sighed again nodding, “I am keenly aware of your dislike for staying in one place sire, but we cannot have the townspeople and most certainly not my fellow knights seeing in such a state.” Oh he hated it when Lance was right. It reminded him way to much of shadow whenever he knew he was right, all smug and shit. He was still angry with him from their conversation earlier that day. If he thought he was just gonna sit and stay like a good dog, boy was he was wrong. Sonic had never been good at following directions anyways, no point in changing that now.

He stood up and made his way over towards Lance, who was slowly back away as he did. He kept moving forward more and more until lance was pressed up against the large door. Lance’s eyes were wide as his breathing picked up. It brought an odd sense of satisfaction to sonic. “Your majesty, what…” before lance could finish that sentence sonic began shoving him into the door, a sign that he wanted him to leave. Lance huffed as he realized Sonics intent quickly opening the door, “I understand sire, I shall stand guard outside if that’s what you wish.” Well sonic really wished he leave entirely but just standing outside would work for now.

Lance stepped outside, slowly shutting the door, as he did so he both heard and felt a hard thump against the other side of it. He quickly looked back to the door, opening it slightly to scold sonic, “Your majesty, please cease these antics at once. You’ll alert the others!” He whisper yelled to sonic, who used this as an opportunity to try and stick his face out of the door. It took all of lances strength to push the door closed. Just as he managed he heard a familiar voice call out to him, “Lancelot? What in Gaias name are you doing?” Perceval asked in a suspicious tone. Well, damn it.
