Kara and Lena's Adventures in Nevermore

Chapter 12: Epilogue

Chapter Text

Sam stared down at her baby girl smiling. Ruby was sucking her thumb as she slept in her bassinet. Sam ruffled her hair softly for a moment before she leaned over and kissed her goodnight and headed out of the room. Sam was about to head to her room when she saw something moving out of the corner of her eye. She walked down the hall to the living room where she thought she saw movement. However, all she saw was darkness. She quickly went to turn on the light. When she did, she jolted back a little. Before her was a man in a very expensive-looking suit.

The man smirked at her and asked, “Why Sam? Are you really that surprised by a little visit?”

Sam frowned as she tried to catch her breath. She stared at Lex for a moment and said, “You do realize there is a thing called the front door and knocking.”

Lex smiled wickedly which brought a shiver down Sam’s spine.

“What would be the fun in that?” asked Lex coyly.

Sam scowled as she took a seat across from Lex.

Sam sighed and said, “Why are you here, Lex? It’s late and I’m supposed to be up in just a couple of hours to head back out to work.”

Lex leaned back and stared at Sam intently and said, “You remember our arrangement, don’t you?”

“Yes…” said Sam warily.

Lex crossed his arms, stared at Sam more menacingly, and said, “Yet, I heard that you ran into my mother and sister recently.”

Sam winced and said, “It wasn’t on purpose. I didn’t seek her out. She just showed up at my place of employment.”

Lex raised an eyebrow and asked, “Is that so?”

Sam nodded quickly and said, “Yes, I would never go back on our agreement.”

Lex started looking at his hands nonchalantly and said, “It would be a shame, really. I would hate to see you lose the house and for the voices to make a comeback.”

Sam let out a wail and exclaimed, “No!” She launched herself at Lex’s knees and looked up at him pleadingly. “I swear to you, I didn’t do anything to compromise our agreement.”

Lex looked at her warily and asked, “Are you certain?”

Sam nodded quickly and said, “I’m positive. I am doing everything I can to ensure Ruby’s safety.”

Lex looked at her calculating for a moment before smiling coyly and patting her on the head.

“I actually believe you.”

Sam breathed a sigh of relief and said, “I would never do anything to go against you. I’m eternally grateful for what you’ve done for me.”

Lex smirked as he leaned forward and said, “I would hope so.”

Sam gave him a soft smile and said, “I promise you that if I see Lena again, I will run the other way.”

Lex chuckled and said, “Well, now that the cat’s out of the bag, there’s no need for the dramatics.”

Sam looked up with a frown and said, “I don’t understand.”

Lex smiled and said, “Sit back down and I’ll explain everything.”

Sam looked at him curiously for a moment before getting up and walking back to her chair.

Once Sam sat back down, she asked, “Should I do something different?”

Lex leaned back smiling and asked, “Well, now that you mention it, there is something you can do.”

“What?” asked Sam cautiously.

“If you see my sister, you can engage with her. If you avoid her now, it will make her more curious. You can’t however tell her I had anything to do with you being in Jericho.”

Sam looked down and asked softly, “Can I tell her why I left?”

Lex sighed and said, “You can tell her half-truths. Part of the reason you left is because you were pregnant. I wouldn’t tell her about your other issue.”

Sam sighed as she looked down and muttered, “Because she would reject me.”

Lex chuckled which caused Sam to look up at her curiously.

Sam raised an eyebrow and asked, “What is so funny?”

Lex slowly composed himself and said, “I’m sorry. I just thought that since you were friends with my sister, you would have known her better than that.”

Sam frowned while looking down and muttered, “How would you know?”

Lex smiled while leaning back and said, “Broken people gravitate to other broken people. She would’ve done anything within her powers to help you. However, given the progress we’ve made with your condition, we don’t want to add her magic to the mix to derail us now, do we?”

Sam shook her head quickly and said, “No.”

Lex nodded and said, “I am glad to see we’re in agreement on that. Now, since I’m here, we can do another one of your treatments right now.”

Sam looked up at him startled and asked, “Tonight? I don’t know. It takes me a while to recover from those. I also don’t have anyone to watch Ruby and then I have work soon…”

Lex sighed while rubbing his head and asked, “Sam, have I failed you so far in our endeavor?”

Sam looked down meekly and said, “No…”

“I have taken care of everything so far. I wouldn’t leave you in the lurch. If something happens with Ruby, I’m here and can watch her while you are doing your treatments. As far as your duties at the fudge shop, I’m the one that got you the job. I’m sure it wouldn’t be a problem to get you the day off.”

Sam breathed a sigh of relief and said, “Okay.”

Lex clapped his hands together and said, “Perfect! Now. I want you to lean back in the chair and close your eyes. Once you do that, I want you to take deep breaths.”

Sam situated herself in the chair and started following Lex’s instructions.

Lex continued and said, “I want you to think of your happy place. Can you see it?”

Sam nodded and said, “Yes, I see it. The field of lavender.”

Lex smiled and said, “Good. I want you to lay in the field and look toward the sky. What do you see?”

Sam smiled and said, “Lots of fluffy clouds.”

Lex continued and said, “Good. Now, I want you to count the clouds until you fall asleep.”

Sam nodded and said softly, “One, two, three, four,…..five…..six……seven…..eight….nin…..”

Sam went silent.

Lex leaned back, smiled wickedly, and asked, “Reign, are you ready to come out and play.”

Sam’s body started glowing purple for a couple of seconds. Lex winced as the purple light engulfed her for a couple of seconds. Once the bright light went away, Sam was seated in her seat in all black clothing and shoes, a black mask covering her eyes, and Kryptonian symbols on her face and hands.”

Sam smiled backed wickedly at Lex and asked, “What are we waiting for? I’m in need of fun right now.”
