Chapter Text
Josie and Vicki came home with Alex after school on October 31st. The teasing began as soon as they left the Midvale High School grounds, much to Kara’s dismay. The supposedly younger girl wanted to run ahead of them, but was trapped in the backseat of the car next to her sister. She wanted to hang out with Kenny, but Eliza had asked her to hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters. Eliza had to work late. Josie, Vicki, and Alex were going to a party. They used the bedroom and bathroom to change into their costumes and do their makeup.
The sounds of Linkin Park blasted upstairs while Kara went to the kitchen for a snack. Since no one was looking, she used her heat vision to blast a face into a pumpkin. It had the added benefit of roasting the seeds for her to eat. The lithe blonde emptied a couple of bags of candy into a bowl. She was tempted, but had promised she would only eat half of the leftovers.
When the music suddenly turned off, Kara went upstairs to see what was going on. Alex and Vicki were rearranging the furniture. Josie drew a ring on the floor with chalk. The area rug had been rolled up and set aside. Kara said that Eliza wouldn’t want them to draw on the hardwood floors. Josie mocked her. Vicki opened a box and took out a board with the alphabet on it. In the top corners, the words “Yes” and “No” were printed. “Goodbye” was displayed along the bottom.
Kara asked the girls what they were going to do. Josie explained that this was the day that the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds were the thinnest. They were going to summon a spirit with the board. Kara protested. She knew of witches on Krypton. They called themselves the Children of Juru or the Daughters of the Night. It was a cult that followed the old polytheistic religion of Kara’s ancestors. The coven used dark magic. It was not something to trifle with, Kara warned. Alex dismissed her, saying that it was just a game, that the board had “Parker Brothers” written on it.
At Josie’s instruction, Vicki lit a candle. Then, Josie asked for the Last High Priestess of the Triple Goddess to come forth. Kara asked why she wanted the last and how many were there. Josie said there had been nine, and that most had been killed during the Great Purge of the Middle Ages. She said the last was alive during King Arthur’s reign and was killed by the Sword Excalibur. Alex didn’t take any of this seriously, but Kara was frightened.
However, the spirit of the Last High Priestess of the Triple Goddess was not the one to answer the call. The spirit that supposedly reached out was that of a young girl who died from the flu in San Francisco in 1919. Despite the tragedy, the girl’s spirit seemed playful, the planchette looped around on the board. The teens asked questions about the boys they liked and what the future would hold for them. They accused each other of moving the indicator to answers they did not like. Kara did not ask any questions, but she paid close attention to the proceedings as the sun was setting.
When the doorbell rang, all four of the girls jumped. Alex told Kara that her job had begun. The blonde quickly stood up and went downstairs. She grabbed the candy bowl and proceeded to the front door. A horde of pirates and a little Shrek greeted her with, “Trick or Treat!” Kara placed two pieces of candy inside each waiting bag.
Alex, Josie, and Vicki left the house dressed as Sarah Connor, a slutty nurse, and a fairy. Kara continued answering the door with the dwindling bowl of candy for a couple of hours. Eliza came home with some take-out. Kara devoured a double hamburger, large fries, and a strawberry milkshake. The doorbell hadn’t chimed in awhile, so Eliza turned off the outside light.
Kara finished her homework and got ready for bed. The room was mostly back in order. The two twin beds were once again separated by nightstands. The area rug was spread out on the floor. The Kryptonian changed into her pajamas and then went to the bathroom to wash her face and brush her teeth. When she went back to her room, she turned off the light and got into her bed. She could hear Eliza preparing for sleep in her own bedroom down the hall as she drifted off to sleep.
A few hours later, Kara thought she felt the presence of someone in her room. She could have been dreaming, or possibly Alex had changed her mind about staying over at Vicki’s that night. Kara opened her bright blue eyes to see a woman with long, dark hair in a black lace dress standing at the foot of her bed. That had to be a dream, she told herself and closed her eyes.
Then, the woman spoke. She had an English/Irish accent. She asked where she was. Kara sat up in her bed and turned on the light. The woman blinked at her and asked who she was. Kara asked the same question. The woman identified herself as Morgana, and after hesitating a moment, as the Last High Priestess of the Triple Goddess.
Kara jumped out of bed and backed against the wall in an instant. She asked the woman what she was doing there. Morgana replied that she had been summoned by her. Kara assured her that she had not been the one to summon her. The woman pulled back the area rug to reveal the ring that Josie had drawn. Kara couldn’t believe that the girls hadn’t erased it before placing the rug back down. She explained that her sister and her friends had summoned her, but were no longer there. The blonde told the brunette that she could go back to where she came from. Morgana refused.
Kara failed to convince the woman to leave. The brunette explained that she had been alone in a dark place for more time than she could enumerate. This played on Kara’s sympathies, as she remembered what it was like to be alone in her pod in the vastness of space. She offered Alex’s bed as a place to sleep, saying they would figure out what to do next in the morning.
