Chapter Text

The card had sat unopened on Wills desk for days. Mike had told him it was practically useless as everything he wanted to say with the card he said in person with a kiss on Will's head.

The not knowing killed him a little though. So finally, Will grabbed the envelope, opening it with a quiet rip. Will was mildly shocked as he saw a piece of notebook paper instead of an actual card. He could see black pen bleeding through the folded paper. Will didn’t know why he was so nervous just to open a letter. He opened it, reading over the words on the page. Will knew Mike was a good writer— suffering through campaign after campaign proved that, but he wasn’t aware of just how articulate Mike could be when he didn't have to say it.

Dear Will,

First, happy birthday. You're the best friend I’ve ever had and I really appreciate it. You put up with me even when I'm being stupid and mean. You put up with all my DnD stuff even when I can tell you don't want to. For that, I love you. I think I always have, I was just too stupid to realize it sooner. I've always subconsciously tried to see if you loved me back. Down to our characters. Paladins and Clerics always rely on each other. But you knew that, didn't you? Even now, I keep insisting you're a sorcerer and not a wizard because paladins and wizards aren’t compatible. Even if it's just a game, I can't stand not being yours in every universe. I love you so much, Will. I’m sorry if it’s awkward, I’ll never talk to you again if you hate me after this. I hope even if you don’t feel the same I hope we can be friends still. I care about you too much to lose you, Will.

Will traced over the damp parts on the paper, ink running in several spots. He smiled softly at the letter, putting it back in its envelope and slipping it between two books on his shelf.
