I need to see your face

Chapter 2

Summary:

Wemmbu finds out about Eggchan's incoming blindness.

Notes:

Shoutout to the person that gave me this idea! It was a fun thing to write, tho I feel like this chapter is worse than the original one, but you're to one to judge that!
I feel like I need to warn you that I myself, infact, have a PERFECT eyesight. I have NO actual idea how it feels to lose the ability to see.
Hope you'll enjoy!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The moment felt ethereal. Egg and Wemmbu laughing together, fighting playfully. But every good thing comes to an end eventually. As soon as their laughter had died, it was quiet again. They were left lying down on the not-so-comfotable cobblestone floor alongside with poor books they probably damaged. And it definitely was cold. Eggchan instinctivly moved closer to the demon, as if begging for a quick hug. The guy understood faster than expected, his hand flew to Seraphim's head, squeezing his hair slightly and stroking it gently. It was one of the few moments of silence the two ever had together, when they didn't choked on their own tears of laughter. Egg's wings twitched and he sat back up. Wemmbu was still lying on the floor like it was the most comfortable place he could ever find in this house. Egg kicked him lightly when he got up - intentionallly.

"Get up bro, we need to clean all this while it didn't get any worse" he said.

"Oh, are you like, done with your studies?"

"Yeah" Egg replied silently. Well, he lied, it's kinda obvious. How was he supposed to continue studying when half of the text was bluring out if he dared to focus? But of course, he won't tell Wemmbu that. It still makes him feel worthless, and the demon has no idea.

"Alright," Wemmbu let it slide, lazily getting up from the books crumpled beneath his body. "Clean it up yourself, I'll go cook something for dinner"

"Try not to burn our house down, thank you" the Seraphim said, giggling.

Wemmbu only shot him a side-eye and left, the click of his heels as an indicator how far away he is. Now Egg is alone again in this chaos of a library. He sighed, a relaxed smile on his face. To be honest, most of the bookshelfs were bluring out. As in he couldn't tell what section it was and which books were related to it. Most of the books around him had the same binding color. And it didn't help when he came to realization that some of the books on the floor were Wemmbu's - the ones for enchanting. That guy wouldn't read philosopy and the history of the world. Why would anyone keep books of enchanting and the ones for self-development in the same library? Why would anyone keep books in the library? What a dumb question, Eggchan. He's only scared of accidentally mixing normal books with Wemmbu's, because the only thing keeping them apart was a slight shining with a semi-purple color. Happily for Egg, he can still see almost somewhat clear at arm's length.

Afet a good hour and a half the seraphim is proudly looking at the clean cobblestone floor and bookshelfs full with books again. Let's hope he did everything correctly! Though after this, he's really hesitant if he'll go in the library ever again. Finally, Egg goes up the stairs staight to the kitchen.

"Took you long enough, dude," Wemmbu said with a smirk, sitting on the sofa.

"If it was you there, I bet you wouldn't be done in a whole day. The place is huge!" the Seraphim answers, leaning back against the kitchen counter. He couldn't see his friend's face from this distance, but he for sure felt his gaze. The demon laughs, pushing a plate with food to Egg's side of the table.

"Ohh, The Almighty Eggchan, please bless the mortals by trying their food," the purple blob keeps mocking the other.

"You're an asshole, I hope you're aware," Egg felt as if he was being ragebaited - which he probably was. And Wemmbu was proud of himself. He should spend less time with Boosfer at this point..

And it would be all rainbows if Eggchan's sight was left at that - he still could see what was around him, so he wasn't really sad. But oh, it seems like the universe has other plans - as mentioned earlier, he was losing his sight really fast. Might be even faster than with any other mortal being. Was it some sort of curse from the above? He hopes not.

After just a couple of months - yes, it was THAT fast, Wemmbu left once again for some resourses. When he came back, it was really early in the morning, and even if Egg was an early bird, he was still asleep. Or tried to convince everyone he was. As he was already really deep in the process of losing the ability to see entirely, he preferred not to look around himself at all. He might've felt useless again. Lying down in the bed 80% of the time wasn't good and it was stupid of him to assume Wemmbu wouldn't notice anything. But he still hopes he'll be able to escape that conversation with the demon.

"Egg, I'm back," the guy loudly declared his presence in the bedroom. Egg's wings twitched slightly, but he himself didn't move, still facing the wall and trying to look asleep.

"Okay, well, that's rude. I know you're awake."

The Seraphim can't help but to giggle before sitting up. Now, everything even at arm's length was blurry, with color and light being dimmer than usual. Yeah, it's definitely a curse at this point. When he opened his eyes, he looked really lost in the space, before he noticed a still bright purple figure leaning against the doorframe. He will for sure miss how Wemmbu looked to out of place everywhere - all shiny and confident with that purple color all over him.

"Yeah-yeah, sorry, thought I'd sleep for another hour," Eggchan said.

The demon only looked at him questioningly - a shame he can't see that. Actually, he can't see any slight movements from his friend at all. He only noticed as he was approaching him. To be real, Egg felt like he was slowly losing his sense of shapes. The angelic creature felt a cold hand on his cheek and made a questioning face.

"Are you okay?" Wemmbu asked. Did he realized something?

"What do you mean?" Egg kept playing dumb, as demon's hand drew a circle on his cheek. Felt nice, to be honest.

"Well, you haven't been yourself lately. Spending almost all the time in the bed, even stopped going to library. And.. most of the time during our dialogues you look lost, trying not to look at me. Usually you'd try to keep the eye contact as much as you could force me to."

Eggchan felt his heart stopped. Well of course, Wemmbu would notice things! It's Wemmbu, he keeps a close eye on him - it was stupid to hope he wouldn't. He swallowed, a familliar feeling of a lump in his throat and tears welling up - all at once. That was.. fast. The Seraphim felt a hot tear rolling down, even if he didn't sob, and he just let himself lean over to Wemmbu, who was now sitting on his knees before him. He tried to make out demon's face - to see his signature smirk once again.

"You know, aside from me slowly going fully blind, I'm fine," there, he said it! You can't ask him to do more! He felt as the purple blob twitched from shock and heard the demonic tail hit the floor.

"What? And you didn't tell me?"

"I told you now."

Cofusion quickly grew on Wemmbu's face. Why did his best friend keep such an important detail about his health hidden? That's absurd! If Wemmbu knew, he would definitely try to do something - its curable at early stages, yeah? No way its not. But no, Egg, oh Egg, he decided to act as he pleased - to not tell anyone anything until it was too late. The demon was overcome with many emotions - cofusion, obviously, sadness, worry, but not.. anger. From the start the Seraphim was scared that his friend would be really mad if he'll ever find out about his soon-to-be disability. But Wemmbu felt everything but that. It was good eight minutes in silence before any of them dared to speak. Egg let out his first sob in parallel to him giggling from his stupidity.

"I'm sorry, I should've told you sooner."

"Idiot, don't say that! It's not like you could do anything about it.. but yeah, you could've told me! Again, you don't tell me anything, you leave me clueless until it gets so bad you can't pretend everything is fine!" there was a note of despair in Wemmbu's voice. That was.. not what Egg expected. Again, he felt his wings flutter, moving to hide his face - as Wemmbu learned, it often happened when the guy felt strong embarassment and shame.

"It's okay- I mean, it's not, it's bad, but- Oh my. Egg, I- I'm not mad at you. I could never be mad at you,'' now, that caught his friends attention back. "We will deal with it. You- you won't be less important to me just because of that."

Egg almost laughs from the trembling worry in Wemmbu's voice, as he himself had long since come to terms with him going blind. Seriously, the demon's voice was so different from his usual cocky tone, it was confusing and funny.

"And don't you dare laugh at me like that! I don't know what to say, it's hard to find good words, you know!" Wemmbu sounded offended, but the familiar tone is back. That was what mattered the most.

"Alright, whatever you say, dude," Egg smiles softly, feeling as his heart rate was stabilizing. The worst was now in the past. The demon wasn't mad at him and judging by his words, Egg will not become a burden. It was all that the Seraphim was worried about.

And that, really, was something incredible. As if all of his worries and problems were gone in a single moment. Right now he was being held by his best friend, the one whose face he'll probably never be able to make out again, but he will always feel his presence. And Egg knows that his presence means safety with a little cold. Their connection really was deeper than others and went through all of the possible problems. For these two friendship wasn't just a weakness in a fight - it was a sourse of strength, a reason to live and keep going. Friends are lifelong companions. Usually this phrase is used for romantic type of relationship, but to look at it really - platonic relationship and love, the one that goes deeper than a desire to connect with one another is probably one of the most valuable treasure in peoples life, the one that is going to be hard to find and easy to break.

Notes:

I wish everyone to have Wemmbu for their Eggchan and the other way around!

It's short but whatever. Couldn't really think of anything else.. By the way, no, I won't write another chapter where they find some magical cure for Egg's blindness. He's infact cursed. In this story - as in my headcanon, Egg is implied as FALLEN seraphim. Bro's best friends with a demon!! So him losing his ability to see while being "the all-seeing eye" is a sort of cursed destiny he got for befriending Wemmbu. Not that he knows it.. And yeahhh I really like the idea of blind/badsight Eggchan as u can tell
