Chapter Text

After the “ever so eventful” afternoon on Monday, things went back to normal. Today, Wednesday, Aziraphale had something planned. He pulled Crowley into the kitchen by the arm, having already set out everything they needed.

“Angel, what the hell are you doing?” Crowley asked, tone thoroughly confused.

“I’m going to teach you how to bake cupcakes!” He smiled, almost giddy at the idea.

“You know I don’t bake, Aziraphale.” He retorted.

“I know, but that’s just because you don’t know how—yet!” The angel laughed softly, smiling at him.

“Ugh…fine. Just get on with it.” Crowley mumbled.

A few hours later, after making the batter and putting the cupcakes in the oven, Aziraphale went off to do something—probably checking on Maggie and Nina—leaving Crowley alone to make sure the cupcakes got out of the oven at the right time. Aziraphale’s batch had already finished and been pulled out before he had left, so all the Crowley had to do was watch his own, which couldn’t be that hard. Could it?

Apparently, it was that hard, as Crowley somehow managed to forget about the cupcakes still in the oven, and had taken a short nap only to wake up to the smell of slightly burnt pastries. Aziraphale came back from checking on Maggie and Nina to find Crowley slumped in a chair, looking a little upset.

“Crowley? Is something wrong?” He chimed gently.

“It’s nothing.” The demon mumbled.

“It’s not nothing if you’re visibly upset.” Aziraphale retorted.

“I burnt my batch of cupcakes a bit.” He grumbled. After the words finally settled in the angel’s mind, he laughed a bit.

“That’s fine Crowley, it’s your first time baking. They’re probably salvageable.” The angel reassured.

“Only probably.” Crowley grumbled. Aziraphale rolled his eyes a bit, then pulling the demon back to the kitchen and taking a look at the two batches of cupcakes. One was perfectly baked, the other was slightly charred around the edges. Aziraphale stood for a moment, assessing what he could do before an idea sprouted in his mind.

Twenty minutes later and they had two batches of lemon meringue cupcakes. One batch completely normal, the other batch with filling added in to help avert any burnt taste the batter might have. Now, with their two batches of cupcakes in tow, Aziraphale forced the demon to actually leave their book shop today, and they headed off to the mostly empty and quiet St.James park. Here Crowley found what had taken Aziraphale so long when he had left earlier…He had set up a picnic for them, and had somehow gotten Crowley to unknowingly help him bake cupcakes for it. They sat down, and Aziraphale pulled out their two batches of cupcakes. He handed one from his own batch to Crowley, and took one from Crowley’s batch for himself. The angel held up the cupcake towards Crowley.

“Cheers?” He prompted gently, a giddy smile on his face. Crowley sighed.

“Cheers.” He responded flatly, raising up his cupcake and tapping it to the one the angel held. Then, they both took a bite. Aziraphale had clearly made cupcakes before, as the ones that he had made were basically perfect. Crowley glanced over to the angel, swallowing before speaking.

“Sorry if they taste bad.” He mumbled. The angel, however, smiled over at him in delight.

“I don’t know what you mean, they’re wonderful!” He laughed. “They’re better than the normal ones I made.” He said before taking another bite. Crowley only laughed.

“Whatever you want to believe, Angel.” He mumbled.

“I’m being honest. I’d never lie to you, especially not about this.” Aziraphale replied. “Just try it.” He held up the last bite of his cupcake for Crowley to take. Crowley—because of course he couldn’t act normal—ate the piece of cupcake right out of the angel’s hand and he smiled when he realized that they did taste as good as Aziraphale had said. Aziraphale flushed before laughing at the behavior, as if not even caring that the action wasn’t completely normal.

They continued their picnic for a few hours, the sun beginning to set on them as they sat there in the park with only each other and the sounds of nature for company…and to them, the world finally felt all right again.
