Chapter Text

Five minutes into the walk, and Wifies is catching notice of the slowing drag of Hummer’s legs. Sunlight aimlessly slides into his thick-lensed eyeglasses and hits his dark teal hair, painting a subtle glow into his streaking cyan highlights. Wifies’s eyes track its path, the way it feeds the color fading down Hummer’s roots. Wifies had helped Hummer dye it himself. They had laughed hysterically for hours when the blue pigment turned out more seasick green than advertised. And being the adorable klutz he is, Hummer ended up splattering his shirt with the colors of a murky ocean.

Hummer tilts his head towards him, large eyes curious and questioning. Wifies realizes he’s grinning and quickly rights his expression to a more blank stare. He totally wasn’t admiring Hummer. Not in the slightest. Not at all—

As the two stroll down the street, they drink the sandy saltwater smell in the air. Joggers pass them, the shuffle of their arms constant and rhythmic, while seagulls screech angsty curses above. Hummer gazes at them as if they’re angels beckoning him into an hour’s curated tour of Heaven. He might as well think they have insider information on the Leviathan.

Wifies huffs a little laugh at his friend’s amazement at those birds. “Damn, Hummer. I didn’t know you’re entertained by seagulls of all things—”

Hummer raises his eyebrows, cheeks reddening, and elbows him. “What do you mean? Gulls are wonderful birds!”

“French fry propaganda,” sings Wifies, rolling his eyes. “If you want me to sacrifice my lunch to mother nature, you can just ask next time!”

“Ugh, I just can’t with you and your—”

“Oh?” Wifies raises his arm and ruffles Hummer’s hair. “Now, now, don’t worry—you’ll always be my favorite little lunatic, Hums.”

Hums?he can’t believe he just said that, and now he’s making a massive fool of himself.

He searches for the astonishment that should be written across Hummer’s face but finds only a wide beam.

              Time to switch the topic.

“So…uh, Hummer. If they do have couples’ discounts, how do you feel about pretending to be like—dating? I’m sure we’ll pass as one if we try-”

              Nope nope nope.

             Nope.

He shouldn't have even brought that up. But Hummer pauses, and considers for a second.

            "Uh, sure!"
