Chapter Text

Tucked directly behind the glitter of the storefronts lay a jagged seam of reality that nobody posted online.

Stepping through the back exit of THE PURRFECT POUR meant watching the sweet aroma of oat milk foam and soft pastel comfort evaporate in a single breath.

Passing the service door of IRON & INK offered no relief, as the sterile edge of antiseptic and freshly wiped leather dissolved into the night air.

Outside, the commercial strip dropped its carefully curated facade, collapsing into a forgotten canyon of crumbling red brick that city planners had long abandoned.

Mortar wept fine dust onto fractured asphalt while gargantuan metal dumpsters groaned beneath the unglamorous weight of human consumption.

Soggy cardboard boxes soaked in stagnant puddles, releasing an eternal perfume of damp paper, stale coffee grounds and distant exhaust fumes.

High above, a stray cat perched atop a greasy bin, grooming itself with an air of dramatic existential dread that felt perfectly suited to the scene.

Between the silhouettes of rooftop vents, the sky put on an inappropriately gorgeous performance.

The sinking sun slashed across the clouds, painting the bruised heavens in strokes of deep violet, crushed magenta and burnt orange.

Darkness spilled into the corridor like black ink, extending long skeletal fingers across the pavement while the temperature plummeted, leaving behind a place where warm pastel dreams came to drown in the cold reality of twilight.

Park Seonghwa wrapped his soft cardigan tightly around his chest, resting his forehead against the steel of the cafe's back door as a chilly dusk breeze seeped through the thin fabric of his clothes.

A shiver ran down his spine, though he stubbornly refused to step back inside into the warmth.

A wooden clipboard lay forgotten on a stack of plastic crates nearby, a checklist demanding that he count the newly arrived bags of gourmet salmon kibble for the resident cats.

Performing mundane stock checks felt hilariously impossible when his heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Desperation had driven him out into the alleyway, seeking any breath of air that was not infused with steam, roasted hazelnut syrup and his own spiraling thoughts.

72 hours had crept past since that chaotic, earth-shattering moment in the basement.

3 endless days had stretched into a heavy stillness that made his lungs ache.

Kim Hongjoong had become a ghost, haunting the edges of Seonghwa's world without actually showing his face.

Through the shared brick wall separating the cafe from the tattoo parlor, Seonghwa could still feel the thrum of bass vibrating right into his boots.

Every now and then, the deep, rumbling timbre of the alpha's voice carried through the old pipes as he barked impatient corrections at his nervous apprentices.

The evidence of Hongjoong was everywhere, loud and alive, yet the man himself remained invisible, leaving Seonghwa alone in the fading light to count cat food and suffer in silence.

Seonghwa let his head fall backward until his scalp met the coarse, chill surface of the brick wall.

He closed his eyes, inhaling the evening air in a futile attempt to cool the lingering fever beneath his skin.

Pulling the soft, cream knit of his oversized cardigan tight around his waist, he buried his hands deeper into the sleeves.

The fabric provided a tiny shield against the rising wind, though it did nothing to quiet the storm raging inside his chest.

A bitter, prickling warmth gathered behind his closed eyelids as frustration twisted in his stomach.

He questioned why a disappointment felt so heavy in his chest when he should be celebrating the man's absence.

He genuinely detested Kim Hongjoong.

The alpha was abrasive, insufferably arrogant and possessed all the charm of a wounded bear.

The man had literally threatened legal action over a few rogue strands of orange cat fur clinging to his leather jacket, which was as absurd as it was exasperating.

Yet no matter how he tried to lecture himself, the vivid memory of the basement stubbornly refused to fade.

The ghost of Hongjoong's ink-adorned hand seemed to burn against his jawline all over again, leaving a trail of heat across his sensitive skin.

He could still remember the overwhelming wave of rich, protective cedar scent that had crashed over him, suffocating his rising panic in an instant.

Most dangerous of all was the memory of the alpha's gaze.

It had been intense and starving, striking a chord so primal that Seonghwa's omega had practically begged to drop all defenses and yield on the spot.

A pitiful squeak pierced through the swirling fog of his thoughts.

Seonghwa snapped his eyes open, neck turning instantly toward the shadow behind the recycling bins.

The sound was incredibly tiny, almost lost within the rumble of evening traffic along the main avenue.

To the razor-sharp instincts of an omega, however, the desperate cry was impossible to ignore.

“Meww~”

Seonghwa pushed away from the brick wall, heart jolting into his throat as his protective instincts instantly overrode the sullen misery that had been clouding his mind.

The lingering irritation toward a certain brooding tattoo artist faded into the background, replaced by an urge to locate the source of that pitiful distress.

He glided deeper into the dim corridor, the soles of his shoes moving with silence across the fractured asphalt.

Navigating the grim landscape, he carefully skirted the towering, rusted dumpsters that reeked faintly of sour milk and old coffee grounds.

He lifted his long legs gracefully to step over a splintered wooden pallet lying abandoned in the grime, taking care not to snag the cloud soft hem of his cream cardigan on the stray iron nails.

Every single one of his senses was hyper aware, tuned directly into the shadowy stillness of the evening.

At the far edge of the property line, where a high wrought iron fence rusted against the back of the neighboring building, nature had staged a dramatic, slow motion rebellion.

An oak tree, gnarled and stubbornly persistent, had forced its way directly through the thick layer of urban concrete.

Its massive, serpent roots had completely shattered the pavement into a mosaic of jagged grey stone, while its thick, moss covered branches stretched out wildly like giant arms reclaiming the space over the brick rooftops.

Seonghwa paused directly beneath the sprawling leafy canopy, tilting his chin upward into the shadows.

The foliage rustled gently in the cool breeze but beneath the soft sigh of the wind came the unmistakable sound once more.

“Mew! Meoow~”

The tiny chorus was floating down from high above, perched somewhere among the highest, most precarious knots of the tree.

Seonghwa arched his neck further toward the darkening sky, squinting through the thick labyrinth of rustling foliage.

Shadows danced across the leaves as a cool gust swept through the alleyway, making the canopy whisper overhead.

He shifted his weight upon the asphalt, adjusting his position to search for any break in the dense green cover.

His breath caught in his throat when his gaze finally snagged on a microscopic tremor amidst the highest swaying branches.

Suspended roughly fifteen feet in the air on an impossibly delicate twig sat a shivering, pitiful heap of orange, black and white fur.

The little creature was practically a fuzzy teardrop, barely large enough to fill the palm of his hand, clinging for dear life with four sets of tiny claws hooked frantically into the rough bark.

Every gentle breeze rocked the precarious limb like a pendulum.

The calico looked straight down toward the pavement.

Its tiny pink mouth stretched wide as it released another round of heartbroken, dramatic wails.

The sight went straight to Seonghwa's soul, striking his omega instincts like a thunderbolt.

The overwhelming protective surge hit him so hard that his knees wobbled, knocking every single trace of his previous self pity straight out of his lungs.

Forgotten was his lingering sorrow, forgotten was the insufferable tattoo artist living next door because a helpless baby was in peril.

His maternal instincts roared to life, filling his chest with a sweet panic that demanded immediate action.

Taking a step closer to the base of the gnarled tree, he extended an open hand upward as if he could somehow bridge the physical distance with willpower alone.

He softened his voice into a warm, gentle purr, praying the soothing tone might cushion the little creature's overwhelming terror.

“Oh, sweet mercy, hang on..”

Seonghwa murmured, eyes overflowing with tenderness.

“Hey there, tiny baby. It is alright, sweetheart, I am right here and I see you..”

His eyes darted around the gloom of the alley, searching in vain for any kind of emergency equipment.

No aluminum ladder stood propped against the walls, nor were there any sturdy crates within reach.

The giant metal dumpsters sat far too distant to serve as a stepping stool, completely useless against the back wall like rusted iron monuments.

Above him, the tiny calico released another raspy shriek that sounded entirely too big for its microscopic body.

A sickening knot tightened in Seonghwa's stomach when one of the little back paws lost its grip, slipping off the smooth bark into thin air.

The poor baby dangled perilously over the drop, miniature limbs scrambling frantically until it managed to haul itself back onto the branch.

It trembled so hard that the leafy green canopy around it shuddered in sympathetic terror.

In that horrifying moment, all rational thought fled Seonghwa's mind.

He did not care that his cloud soft, cream colored designer cardigan was about to be ruined by sap and dirt.

He gave no thought to his tailored slacks or the smooth leather of his shoes.

He completely brushed aside the embarrassing fact that he possessed absolutely zero upper body strength, having spent his entire life lifting ceramic teacups rather than scaling nature.

None of his usual elegance mattered when a tiny life was in jeopardy.

Propelled by an unstoppable wave of protective instincts, Seonghwa marched right up to the base of the massive oak tree.

Up close, the trunk rose like a monolithic wall.

Its thick surface is covered in rough, peeling scales and patches of damp green moss.

Taking a deep breath of the cool dusk air, he reached upward and wedged his manicured, elegant fingers into a groove within the rough timber.

He planted the toe of his shoe securely onto a thick, protruding knot near the bottom, braced his body and hauled himself upward with every ounce of strength he possessed.

Ascending the oak proved to be a magnificent, humiliating ordeal.

The coarse timber bit mercilessly into the tender skin of his uncalloused palms, leaving fiery red abrasions across his hands.

Stray twigs snared themselves without pity into his impeccably styled hair, tugging tangled strands loose with every inch he managed to scramble upward.

Damp, dark moss pulverized against the fabric of his tailored trousers, permanently staining his knees a hilarious shade of muddy green.

It was an unmitigated disaster for his dignity, yet every dramatic, piteous squeak echoing from the upper branches instantly silenced any rational thought in his mind.

Driven entirely by a volatile mixture of blind panic, maternal instinct and pure adrenaline, he continued his awkward ascent like a man possessed.

With one final desperate haul of his trembling upper body, Seonghwa managed to sling a leg over the primary fork of the trunk.

He collapsed against the sturdy wooden frame, ribs expanding and contracting rapidly as he gulped down the dusk air.

His chest heaved with ragged breaths while his heart hammered frantically against his ribs.

The bark beneath him smelled of rich earth and decaying leaves, cooling his flushed cheeks as he paused to gather his completely nonexistent physical stamina.

In a moment of misjudgment, his gaze strayed downward.

The alleyway below had receded into a terrifying abyss, the cracked asphalt looking impossibly far away.

The rusted tops of the metal dumpsters suddenly resembled tiny toy blocks, emphasizing just how high he had climbed without any safety net.

A spike of vertigo slammed into his head, making the entire world tilt dangerously on its axis.

Nausea rolled through his stomach while his brain loudly reminded him that he was an omega who served baked pastries, not a trained acrobat.

Gritting his teeth until his jaw ached, Seonghwa squeezed his eyes shut to banish the sickening spin.

He clung to the rough trunk like a limpet, pressing his forehead against the mossy bark until the ground settled back where it belonged.

Refusing to yield to the terror, he forced his eyelids open once more, locked his eyes onto the leafy canopy above and braced himself to finish what he started.

The terrified little creature was stranded on an even narrower branch, perched just inches beyond his maximum reach.

Leaves rustled violently in the gathering dusk as a gust swept through the high canopy, swinging the fragile limb back and forth.

Lying flat against the bark, Seonghwa slowly shimmied his body forward, carefully shifting his weight out onto the treacherous offshoot.

The timber groaned in ominous protest beneath him, sending a fresh wave of panic straight to his stomach.

“Hey, sweetie, come a little closer..”

Seonghwa coaxed softly, though his voice trembled that he sounded far less brave than he hoped to appear.

The kitten, completely overwhelmed by the terrifying shudder of the branch beneath its tiny paws, flattened its microscopic body against the mossy bark.

It pinned its ears flat against its head, opened its pink mouth wide and let out a squeaky, ferociously dramatic little hiss that was infinitely more fluffy than menacing.

“Come on, little baby, just come over to me..”

Seonghwa pleaded with sweet tenderness, gritting his teeth as the branch bowed another inch toward the pavement below.

He stretched his right arm out to its limit, extending his fingers until his shoulder joint practically screamed in agony.

His ribs pressed against the wood, the brutal pressure digging straight through the ruined wool of his cardigan.

Every breath he took felt like a tiny localized tragedy, yet he stubbornly ignored the ache in his chest.

He strained forward until his fingertips barely grazed the shivering fur along the kitten's spine, feeling the tiny heart beating like a frantic hummingbird beneath the multi-colored coat.

Knowing the fragile limb could snap at any second, Seonghwa abandoned all remaining logic.

With a sudden, reckless lunge that risked his balance, his dignity and his safety, he surged forward and securely snatched the loose scruff of the kitten's tiny neck.

The outraged little creature let out an ear-splitting screech, tiny instincts screaming betrayal as it lashed out blindly in terror.

Four sets of miniature, needle-sharp claws immediately hooked into the skin of Seonghwa’s wrist, digging into his bare flesh.

A sharp gasp escaped his lips as tiny droplets of crimson welled up along the fresh scratches, the stinging pain burning like fire in the cool dusk air.

Yet despite the sudden flash of agony, his fingers remained locked around the scruff.

Giving up was simply not an option.

With a smooth pull, he drew the frantic little creature backward toward the safety of his body, refusing to let the flailing hurricane of fur slip back out into thin air.

He pressed the trembling bundle firmly against his sternum, cocooning the tiny body within the thick folds of his cardigan.

The ridiculously plush fabric wrapped around the kitten like a warm protective shield, trapping its miniature paws and instantly subduing its dramatic little tantrums into helpless wiggles.

Seonghwa leaned his weight into the tree, clutching the precious cargo against his chest while his heart pounded against his ribs with the ferocity of a runaway freight train.

“I have you now, little baby..”

Seonghwa exhaled softly, warm breath fanning over the kitten's tiny twitching ears as he cradled the soft bundle against his chin.

“I have you. You are safe now.”

Surrendering to a massive wave of relief, he squeezed his eyes shut tightly while a shudder of exhausted gratitude washed over his entire body.

He leaned his forehead against the coarse, moss covered timber of the main trunk, inhaling the scent of earth, crushed leaves and warm kitten fur.

The cool bark offered a soothing contrast to his feverish, scratch-stung skin while the evening breeze rustled gently through the darkening canopy overhead.

For three glorious seconds, he allowed his frayed nerves to settle, reveling in the quiet victory of saving a tiny life.

Unfortunately for his peace of mind, the sweet sense of triumph proved to be fleeting.

When Seonghwa opened his eyes to map out a sensible route back down to solid ground, the entire world reeled in a swirl of motion, tilting off its proper axis.

The pavement was no longer a manageable distance beneath his feet.

In the rapidly gathering twilight, the murky shadows lining the narrow alleyway had deepened into a pitch black, bottomless pool that seemed eager to swallow him whole.

The substantial oak branch that had supported his upward climb suddenly felt absurdly fragile, taking on the precarious thickness of a single snapping toothpick beneath his shifting weight.

To make matters infinitely more complicated, he was trapped in an exceptionally ridiculous physical predicament.

His left arm was completely occupied serving as a wool padded vice for the squirming bundle of calico fur writhing against his chest.

The tiny rescued creature was currently expressing its gratitude by purring with dramatic fury while simultaneously trying to kick its microscopic back feet free from his sweater folds.

Seonghwa was left with precisely one free hand to navigate a gravity defying descent.

Eager to reach the safety of the main trunk, he attempted to inch his body backward toward the sturdy fork of the tree.

He extended his right leg, seeking solid timber but his smooth sole encountered a deceptively plush patch of damp green moss.

His foot lost traction instantly.

A sharp, horrified cry ripped from his throat as his stomach dropped straight into the toes of his shoes.

The world lurched beneath him and his right leg slipped clean off the branch, dangling helplessly over the empty void below.

Adrenaline spiked like liquid fire through his bloodstream.

Throwing all remaining grace and dignity to the wind, Seonghwa wrapped his single free arm around the monolithic oak trunk in an ungraceful bear hug.

He slammed his body flat against the timber, pressing his flushed cheek against the wood while his fingernails dug frantically into the deep grooves of the bark until the skin beneath his nails split, leaving tiny crimson stains upon the tree.

He was trapped in a stalemate.

Complete and total paralysis seized every muscle in his frame, locking his limbs into an effort to stay alive.

A single wrong movement would break his hold and send him crashing down onto the concrete, yet releasing his grip on the kitten to free both hands was an unthinkable cruelty.

Dropping the fragile, tiny soul onto the unforgiving asphalt below would surely end its life before it had even begun, leaving him stranded in a bizarre limbo where his own survival depended on holding a squirming six ounce ball of fluff that was casually purring against his sternum.

Cold panic flooded his bloodstream, numbing his fingertips and turning his knees to lead.

His breathing disintegrated into short, erratic gasps that barely supplied his starving lungs with oxygen.

The evening air felt impossibly thin, swirling around his head and feeding the vicious whirlpool of dizzying vertigo that threatened to knock him unconscious.

Around him, the towering brick walls of the alleyway seemed to stretch upward into the twilight, closing in on him like a pair of giant hands sealing him inside a tomb.

Squeezing his eyes tightly shut, Seonghwa pressed his cheek flat against the bark as his entire body shuddered in uncontrollable waves.

His fingers, scraped and bleeding from his desperate scramble, burned with fatigue as his arm muscles reached their physical limit.

“Please, help..”

Seonghwa croaked softly, voice breaking into a pitiful whisper that barely managed to escape his throat.

The faint sound was instantly swallowed by the rustle of leaves overhead.

He swallowed hard against the lump in his throat, trying to find enough air to cry out once more.

“Is anybody there.. Please, help me..”

Roughly thirty feet away, the silence of the corridor was suddenly shattered by a violent screech.

The iron fire door of Iron & Ink was shoved open with brute force.

Its rusted hinges groaned loudly as metal slammed against brick, unleashing a bright streak of interior light and the thrum of bass into the dark alley.

Kim Hongjoong stepped back through the door, letting the metal panel slam shut with a loud, reverberating thud that echoed through the corridor.

The collection of silver chains, steel buckles and zippers decorating his worn leather jacket and boots clanked together in a chorus against the quiet evening.

He looked entirely worn down to the bone.

His hair was a messy, windswept mop after hours spent hunched over buzzing tattoo machines and dark, lavender bruised shadows hung under his eyes like badges of severe exhaustion.

Clamped firmly between his lips was a single unlit cigarette, sitting at a careless, crooked angle as he paused to take in the twilight air.

Slumping back against the wall, he thrust his hand into the pocket of his coat.

His ringed fingers, marked with faint traces of dark tattoo ink around the knuckles, scavenged through the lining until they wrapped around the familiar weight of a silver Zippo lighter.

He desperately needed five uninterrupted minutes to himself.

Just five precious minutes of bitter, tar-filled smoke to drown out the haunting, ridiculously sweet scent of warm vanilla that had completely invaded his shop, infused his leather sheets and tortured his mind for three days.

The sugary aroma of the cafe owner next door had effectively wrecked his focus, leaving his instincts on edge and his chest burning with a frustrating, lingering fever.

With a swift flick of his thumb, the silver casing flipped open and the flint wheel produced a brilliant spark, igniting a bright orange flame that danced against the shadows of the alley.

The warm light immediately sculpted the dangerous angles of his jawline, illuminating the dark circles carved beneath his tired eyes and the rigid line of his mouth.

Bringing the flame to the tip of the cigarette, he inhaled deeply, letting the bitter smoke fill his lungs before snapping the lighter shut.

Just as he exhaled a thick cloud of grey smoke toward the darkening sky, hoping to finally clear his head, a tiny, pitiful sound carried down the narrow alleyway on the shivering breeze.

“Is anybody there.. Please, help me..”

Every muscle in Hongjoong’s body locked rigid as the faint voice brushed against the cool evening air.

The pale plume of gray smoke curled lazily from between his parted lips, drifting uselessly into the dusk while his mind struggled to process the sudden interruption.

He did not need to decipher the breathless syllables floating down the corridor because his alpha instincts had already registered the distress signal long before his conscious brain could catch up.

A sudden, brutal shift in the atmosphere sliced cleanly through the stench of decaying cardboard and the acrid burn of tobacco.

The familiar, hauntingly sweet aroma of warm vanilla that had tormented his dreams for three days suddenly spiked, turning terrified and sour with panic.

The intensity of the distress scent struck him in the chest like a physical blow, igniting a protective fire in his veins that instantly vaporized his bone deep fatigue.

Without taking another drag, Hongjoong let the lit cigarette slip from his fingers, letting it fall onto the pavement before his boot ground it out with a brutal twist of his heel.

The quiet peace of his break was utterly obliterated.

He moved forward with speed.

His jacket hardware clanking in rhythm with his swift, stalking footsteps as he cut through the shadows like a predator hunting a threat.

His dark eyes narrowed into intense, searching slits, scanning every neglected corner, every rusted dumpster and every towering silhouette along the alleyway wall.

His pulse hammered against his collarbone while his protective instincts roared for a target.

Dropping his voice into a commanding rumble that vibrated through the brick foundations around them, he barked toward the gloom.

“Who is out there?”

Hongjoong halted at the far edge of the narrow passage where the cracked asphalt met the wrought iron fence.

Darkness pooled in the dead end, revealing nothing but empty spaces and the sprawling silhouette of the giant oak tree.

Just as he began to wonder if his frayed, exhausted mind was playing cruel tricks on him, a tiny, miserable squeak of meow drifted down from the leafy canopy overhead.

His head snapped upward instantly, eyes piercing through the dense gloom of the rustling foliage.

Suspended a full fifteen feet above the unforgiving concrete, perched haphazardly upon a precarious wooden fork, was an unmistakable patch of plush knitwear.

The pale cream cardigan offered a striking, surreal contrast to the dark, moss encrusted timber.

“Seonghwa?”

Hongjoong breathed, the name tumbling from his lips in a breathless whisper as shock paralyzed him in his tracks.

The sight unfolding above him was an extraordinary mixture of heartbreaking peril and unhinged absurdity.

The normally immaculate cafe owner was pressed flat against the rough bark like a delicate moth caught in a storm.

His pale cheek was glued to the dirt stained timber and his right arm was locked in a death grip around the trunk.

His left arm was wrapped firmly against his chest, cocooning a writhing, chaotic ball of orange and black fur within the folds of his ruined sweater.

The little rescued passenger was purring with frantic energy while kicking its miniature back legs against the wool.

Seonghwa was trembling that his shivering frame set the surrounding leaves into a sympathetic rustle, creating a shower of tiny twigs that drifted slowly down into the alley.

“Hongjoong-ssi?”

Seonghwa gasped, breath catching as his chin snapped downward.

Wide, tear filled eyes locked onto the solid figure of the alpha standing beneath the canopy.

The wave of emotional relief that washed over the omega's soot smudged face was so staggering, so raw and devastatingly vulnerable, that it slammed into Hongjoong's chest like a physical blow, temporarily knocking the wind straight out of his lungs.

The proud, guarded wall Seonghwa usually maintained between them had completely disintegrated, leaving behind a helpless soul holding a squirming baby cat.

“Hongjoong-ssi, please..”

Seonghwa whimpered, lower lip trembling as fresh panic flared in his wide eyes.

“I cannot move. I am completely stuck.”

The ridiculous nature of the scenario fought a battle against the wave of panic crashing through Hongjoong’s veins.

On one hand, the sight of the refined, normally immaculate cafe owner clinging to a slippery branch fifteen feet in the air was so wild it felt surreal.

On the other hand, the terrified spikes in Seonghwa’s vanilla scent were striking Hongjoong’s alpha instincts like a physical punch.

With his boots pounding against the pavement, Hongjoong marched straight to the massive roots of the tree, craning his neck upward until his collarbone throbbed from the angle.

“Park Seonghwa! What on earth are you doing way up in a tree?!”

Hongjoong shouted, a deep rumble echoing wildly through the dim alleyway.

“Do not yell at me!”

Seonghwa shrieks back, a high pitched, hysterical edge cracking through his voice.

He squeezed his eyes shut to block out the dizzying void beneath him.

“The poor kitten was crying for help! It was completely stuck!”

Hongjoong stared up in disbelief, eyes narrowing as he spotted a microscopic tuft of orange fluff peeking out from the folds of Seonghwa’s ruined cardigan.

Right on cue, a sudden prickle crept into Hongjoong’s nose.

His mild cat allergy immediately registered the tiny creature's presence.

Exasperation and bewilderment twisted his features.

“You actually scaled a fifteen foot oak tree in tailored clothing just to rescue a tiny hazard?!”

Hongjoong called out, throwing his hands up in disbelief.

“It is a helpless baby!”

Seonghwa cried, though the sudden anger in his chest was instantly crushed by a fresh surge of terror.

His right foot lost its grip, sliding down the wet wood with a scrape.

Under the awkward shift of his weight, the branch emitted a loud, ominous groan that shook loose a shower of damp leaves and twigs.

Seonghwa pressed his body flat against the trunk, tears of distress welling in his wide eyes as a wave of vertigo made the dark alley swirl around him.

“Hongjoong-ssi, please stop arguing and help me!”

Seonghwa sobbed in desperation, a trembling voice barely holding together.

“The bark is soaking wet and I am losing my hold! If I let go, this tiny baby will fall, my head is spinning in circles and I despise heights!”

That final, pitiful confession dissolved into a wet sob that echoed softly through the shivering oak leaves.

The fragile sound sliced straight through Hongjoong’s remaining exasperation, completely shattering his frustration into dust.

Every ounce of pettiness and lingering irritation evaporated in a single heartbeat.

The sour tang of terrified vanilla grew almost overwhelming in the cool evening air, flooding the alpha's senses and triggering a hardwired, cellular instinct to protect and preserve.

The absurdity of the situation no longer mattered, nor did the ridiculousness of the rescued kitten.

All that remained in the gloom of the alleyway was the heartbreaking sight of a trembling omega clinging for life to a slippery covered branch.

The impatient edge in Hongjoong's voice vanished entirely, replaced by a velvety timber that vibrated with authority.

It was the unmistakable command of an alpha taking control of a crisis, a voice steady enough to anchor a falling world.

“Alright alright.. just hang on a second.”

Hongjoong instructed, tone dropping an octave as he stepped directly onto the sprawling, gnarled roots at the base of the trunk.

“Don't you dare look down, Seonghwa. Keep your eyes locked on the tree bark right in front of your nose and just breathe for me.”

Without a single second of hesitation, Hongjoong sprang into action.

He unzipped his leather jacket in one swift motion, the silver zippers and steel buckles ringing sharply in the quiet alley.

He stripped the garment off his arms and tossed the costly piece of clothing carelessly onto a clean patch of asphalt behind him, completely unconcerned with grease or dirt.

Free from the bulky outerwear, he stood clad only in a snug black t-shirt that clung like a second skin across the broad expanse of his shoulders and the powerful, flexing muscles of his back.

With a powerful spring from his boots, Hongjoong leaped onto the metal lid of the nearest dumpster.

The steel plate crumpled under the sudden impact, unleashing a deafening clang that echoed through the brick canyon and startled a roosting flock of pigeons into the sky.

Without losing his momentum, he used the extra elevation to reach for the coping stones lining the top of the adjacent brick wall.

Muscles coiled beneath his fitted black shirt as he flexed his shoulders, uttering a low grunt of exertion while hauling his body upward in a fluid display of physical strength.

He balanced his boots onto the concrete ledge, crouching slightly to stabilize his center of gravity directly beneath the lowest branch of the oak.

A distance of roughly six feet still stretched between them, yet the drop beneath Seonghwa had suddenly felt far less absolute.

Hongjoong extended his arms upward into the rustling green canopy, hands reaching out toward the figure above.

“I am standing right beneath you.”

Hongjoong called out softly, voice dropping into a soothing frequency that cut cleanly through the whistling breeze.

“Seonghwa, listen to the sound of my voice. I need you to release your hold and drop the kitten down to me. You cannot possibly climb down this wet tree with only one free hand.”

“No!”

Seonghwa gasped, voice cracking as he instinctively hugged the squirming bundle closer to his sternum.

The tiny calico let out a muffled squeak against the soft knit of his sweater.

“This baby is far too small and fragile! What if you miss the catch? It will fall onto the pavement and get injured!”

“I am not going to let it fall! I'll give you my word!”

Hongjoong promised, voice acting as a solid anchor in the middle of Seonghwa's wildly spiraling panic.

He adjusted his footing on the masonry ledge, locking his gaze onto the frightened omega.

“I handle tiny, vibrating motorized needles for a living. My hand to eye coordination is completely flawless! So, just trust me and drop the cat!”

“What about your terrible allergies, though?!”

Seonghwa protested hysterically, the overwhelming emotion finally breaking through his resolve as hot tears spilled over his long lashes.

The clear drops trickled down his face, carving paths through the smudges of moss and tree soot on his cheeks.

“Your throat is going to swell up and you will stop breathing!”

An incredulous laugh barked out from Hongjoong’s chest, ringing through the brick canyon like a crack of thunder.

He could barely comprehend the absurd, wildly endearing madness of the situation unfolding above him.

Here was an omega stranded fifteen feet in the sky, clinging for dear life to a slippery, moss-covered tree limb while suffering an overwhelming panic attack and yet his primary worry was whether the alpha beneath him might break out in a skin rash.

The hilarity of Seonghwa's gentle, self-sacrificing heart briefly cut through the tension, leaving a strange, blooming warmth in Hongjoong's chest right alongside the frantic pounding of his pulse.

“I will gladly deal with a few annoying hives later, I swear to you!”

Hongjoong declared, voice carrying a rock-solid promise that left no room for doubt.

His eyes burned with determination as he looked up into the swaying green foliage, tattoo-dusted arms extended into the cool evening air.

The subtle glow of the distant streetlights caught the angles of his face and the conviction in his gaze, radiating a magnetic aura designed to anchor the terrified man in the branches.

“Just put your trust in me..”

Hongjoong coaxed, tone softening into a commanding purr.

“Seonghwa, please.. turn your eyes down and look directly at me.”

The leaves rustled softly overhead as a chilly dusk breeze swept through the oak, carrying with it the sweet scent of panicked vanilla and the grounding aroma of damp timber.

High up on the groaning branch, Seonghwa froze, the resonance of Hongjoong's voice piercing straight through the dizzying fog of his vertigo.

Slowly, painfully, with his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird, Seonghwa tilted his chin downward, forcing his tear-rimmed eyes to meet the protective gaze waiting for him.

Perched upon the narrow masonry ledge of the old brick wall, Hongjoong stood with effortless stability.

His center of gravity anchored like lead despite the precarious footing beneath his boots.

His tattoo-dusted arms reached high up toward the canopy, dark ink crawling across his flexed muscles in intricate spirals of black and silver under the glow of distant streetlights.

His eyes remained locked onto Seonghwa with a focus that instantly cut through the freezing fog of panic paralyzing the omega's limbs.

In that suspended second, every trace of the insufferable, abrasive tattoo artist who had snarled about rogue cat fur on his jacket simply dissolved into the evening wind.

Hongjoong was no longer the arrogant menace living beyond the shared wall.

He was a steadfast, immovable shield standing squarely between Seonghwa and a brutal drop.

The comforting, protective resonance of the alpha's presence rolled over Seonghwa in a warm tide, chasing the icy terror out of his aching veins and replacing it with a quiet urge to trust the man completely.

“Let the little guy go, Seonghwa..”

Hongjoong instructed casually, low rumble laced with a certainty that made disbelief impossible.

“Just open your hands and let him fall. I have him, I promise.”

Drawing a trembling breath of air into his tight chest, Seonghwa gathered every remaining shred of his courage.

He slowly peeled his left arm away from his bruised sternum, unshielding the tiny passenger tucked inside the soft folds of his ruined cream sweater.

The microscopic calico was a frantic, wriggling whirlwind of fluffy fur.

Its miniature orange, black and white head bobbing wildly while its tiny pink nose twitched against the night air.

With aching, scraped fingers that shook like autumn leaves, Seonghwa delicately worked his way through the wool fibers, unhooking four sets of tiny, needle-sharp claws that clung desperately to the knitwork.

The little creature squeaked in dramatic, outraged protest.

Its wide green eyes reflect the swaying leaves above.

Cradling the squirming six-ounce ball of fur directly over the terrifying empty void between them, Seonghwa pressed his cheek briefly against its ears.

His heart overflowed with tender affection.

“I am so so sorry, baby..”

Seonghwa whispered, voice cracking with emotion.

Opening his hands, Seonghwa released his hold and let the little kitten drop into the pavement below.

The tiny calico tumbled through the air.

Its microscopic paws starbursted wildly as a high pitched, outraged squeak tore from its little throat.

Time seemed to decelerate across the dimly lit alleyway while the fuzzy ball of fur plummeted through the rustling canopy.

High above, Seonghwa gasped in breathless terror.

His eyes wide as he watched the precious bundle fall into the dark space between them.

Hongjoong did not hesitate for a single microsecond.

Driven by razor sharp instincts, his hands shot upward like a pair of well oiled steel traps, tracking the falling kitten with precision.

His large, rough palms enveloped the tiny creature midair, absorbing the shock of the drop with incredible softness.

Before the little animal could even process the terrifying sensation of freefall, Hongjoong pulled his hands inward, gathering the squirming bundle securely against the warm expanse of his chest.

The instant the vibrant multicolored fur made contact with the snug black cotton of Hongjoong's shirt, comedy and calamity struck simultaneously.

An invisible cloud of cat dander and fine orange fluff exploded directly off the kitten's frantic coat, puffing upward in a miniature haze straight into the alpha's unsuspicious face.

Hongjoong's breath hitched instantly in his throat, chest freezing mid inhale.

A prickly heat crawled up his sensitive nasal passages with the speed of wildfire, sending a burning sensation surging through his sinuses.

Tears welled up in his eyes instantly, blurring his vision into a haze of twilight shadows and distant streetlight glow.

His entire upper body coiled as a colossal, completely unstoppable reflex seized his lungs.

“Ah— AHCHOO!”

Hongjoong sneezed, body shaking.

His head jerked to the side so he would not blow the tiny creature clear out of his hands or deafen its delicate ears.

The sudden physical tremor rocked him where he balanced on the brick ledge, boots shifting slightly against the masonry to keep his center of gravity.

Yet despite the explosive physical spasm racking his shoulders, his hands remained miraculously tender around the squirming passenger.

He cradled the six ounce ball of fur like fragile porcelain, consciously loosening his finger joints so his immense strength would not press too hard against the kitten's ribs.

“Are you doing alright down there?!”

Seonghwa gasped from his precarious perch, eyes brimming with worry as he peered down through the leafy canopy.

“I am in agony..”

Hongjoong wheezed out, aggressively dragging his bicep across his watering eyes to clear his ruined vision.

His nose felt entirely clogged, a ferocious tickle burned in his sinuses and itchy hives were undoubtedly plotting a full scale invasion across his skin.

Yet despite the catastrophic betrayal of his immune system, he looked down at the tiny creature nestled in his palms.

The calico tilted its furry head up toward him, displaying a dusting of dark soot across its cute pink nose before letting out a pitiful, squeaky little mew that vibrated against his palms.

Hongjoong gritted his teeth, protective alpha instincts warring against his revolting body.

The sight of the sweet, defenseless kitten easily defeated his allergies.

Reaching up, he quickly undid the top two buttons at the neckline of his black shirt, loosening the cotton against his neck.

With exquisite, unbelievable gentleness, he slid the tiny ball of fur inside the garment, tucking it snugly against the radiant heat of his collarbone.

The kitten instantly melted into the warm haven, nestling its small head against his skin while letting out a contented purr.

With his hands finally free to lend aid, Hongjoong looked back up into the groaning branches, though his voice sounded completely congested and nasal.

“Alright, the tiny nightmare is safely secured.”

Hongjoong called, stuffed voice sounding far less intimidating than he would have preferred.

“Now it is your turn to move. Carefully slide your weight down a bit because there is a sturdy wooden knot waiting roughly two feet beneath your left boot.”

Relieved of his wriggling calico passenger, Seonghwa was finally able to clamp both battered hands around the trunk of the oak.

The rough timber bit mercilessly into his newly scraped palms, sending sharp spikes of pain shooting up his forearms, yet the solid wood offered a momentary illusion of control.

He clung to the colossal tree like a drowning man clinging to a driftwood raft, chin resting against the bark while his entire upper frame shuddered under the relentless strain of holding his position.

High above, the sky filtered through the dense green canopy, casting flickering shadows across the slick wood beneath his fingers.

With extreme caution, Seonghwa began the process of lowering his body.

He stretched his left leg downward into the space below, ruined trousers brushing against wet foliage as his shoe blindly probed the face of the trunk.

His boot swung helplessly over the empty void for a second, making his heart leap into his throat before the tip of his sole finally encountered a firm, raised protrusion in the wood.

Finding the sturdy wooden knot Hongjoong had spotted from below, Seonghwa exhaled a breath, cautiously allowing a fraction of his weight to shift onto the small anchor.

Unfortunately, his physical endurance was completely depleted and his body was failing him.

His torn hands were slick with cold sweat, tree sap and tiny droplets of blood, rendering his hold dangerously fragile against the slippery surface.

As he tried to inch his upper body down to match his foot placement, the decaying outer layer of bark beneath his fingertips surrendered under the pressure.

The dry timber disintegrated without warning into a shower of damp dust and loose bark chips, stripping away his only remaining handhold in a single fraction of a second.

A terrified scream ripped from Seonghwa’s throat, echoing against the towering brick walls of the alleyway as gravity instantly claimed his frame.

His hands clawed helplessly at thin air, snapping tiny twigs and tearing through clusters of leaves as his balance failed completely.

His body pitched backward into space, tumbling out of the swaying green branches and plummeting into the void above the cracked pavement.

“Seonghwa!”

Thought ceased to exist inside Hongjoong's mind, replaced instantly by instinct.

He did not pause to calculate the physics of the trajectory, nor did he waste a single microsecond attempting to brace his frame for the collision.

Springing recklessly upward from the masonry ledge of the brick wall, he launched his entire body into the open air, extending his arms high into the void to intercept the plummeting omega.

The kinetic momentum of their collision was brutal, an explosion of physical force that shattered the quiet dusk.

Seonghwa crashed against Hongjoong’s chest, the staggering weight of the impact instantly expelling every last drop of oxygen from both of their lungs in a synchronized, breathless gasp.

Driven by an urge to preserve the fragile life in his arms, Hongjoong clamped his arms securely around Seonghwa’s slender waist, dragging the trembling man tightly flush against his broad torso to absorb the entire brunt of the downward momentum.

Even amidst the sudden chaos, his protective reflexes remembered the delicate passenger resting beneath his cotton shirt.

He subtly angled his chest to the side, ensuring Seonghwa’s frantic weight pressed against his shoulder blades rather than crushing the tiny kitten tucked safely against his warm collarbone.

The physics of their momentum dragged both of their tangled bodies off the ledge, sending them hurtling through the space above the alleyway.

In a brilliant, split second display of protective instinct and acrobatic flex, Hongjoong forcefully contorted his spine midair, twisting his hips in the air to ensure his own back would meet the unforgiving ground first.

They slammed onto the asphalt with a sickening thud that reverberated through the brick canyon.

The hard pavement bit mercilessly through his black t-shirt, sending an electric shock of blinding pain surging up his spine and bruising the muscles across his shoulder blades.

The impact kicked up a subtle haze of alley dust and dry leaves around their fallen frames.

A loud groan ripped from Hongjoong’s throat, vibrating fiercely through his chest as his bruised lungs fought desperately to reclaim air.

A galaxy of tiny silver stars danced across his vision, yet despite the pain radiating down his back, his grip on the omega never loosened by even a millimeter.

His arms remained locked around Seonghwa like unbreakable bands of iron, completely cocooning the man against his body and shielding him entirely from the ruthless concrete below.

For ten full seconds, a quietude descended upon the shadowy corridor, broken only by the ragged rhythm of two chests heaving frantically against each other.

The evening air hung thick with the rich fragrance of rain soaked concrete, crushed oak leaves and the overwhelming, sweet surge of warm vanilla radiating from the thoroughly shaken omega.

Seonghwa was sprawled entirely across the alpha's broad frame, slender body cushioned completely from the brutal concrete by the solid chest beneath him.

His face remained buried in the warm curve of Hongjoong's throat, inhaling the grounding, comforting heat of the man's skin while clutching at the soft cotton of his t-shirt.

Every muscle in Seonghwa's frame shuddered with uncontrollable tremors, teeth chattering together in a helpless rhythm as the adrenaline slowly began to recede.

“Seonghwa..”

Hongjoong wheezed softly, voice sounding rough, raspy and thoroughly battered by the staggering impact of their fall.

A throbbing ache flared across his back where his shoulder blades had taken the full force of the asphalt, yet he completely ignored his own physical discomfort.

Easing his tight hold around the omega's waist, one of his large ringed hands traveled smoothly up the curve of Seonghwa's back.

His fingers tangled tenderly into the messy hair at the nape of the man's neck, gently pulling small bits of stray twigs from the soft strands.

The cool silver bands on his knuckles pressed soothingly against warm skin, cradling the back of Seonghwa's head to hold him securely against his shoulder.

“Hey, listen to me..”

Hongjoong murmured, tone softening into a velvety protective rumble that vibrated straight through his sternum.

“I have you. You are safe now and you are back on the ground..”

The soothing resonance of the alpha's voice pierced straight through the frantic fog in Seonghwa's mind, acting as a gentle anchor in the lingering chaos.

Slowly, Seonghwa raised his head from the warm sanctuary of Hongjoong's neck.

The alleyway around them still reeled in a dizzying, nauseating spin of flickering streetlights and looming brick walls, threatening to throw his senses into disarray once more.

Yet as he blinked away the warm moisture brimming along his eyelashes, the tilting world abruptly fell away and his vision narrowed entirely onto the beautifully familiar face resting mere inches beneath his own.

Hongjoong looked completely disheveled, battered by both the allergic reaction and the violent impact with the earth.

Windswept hair fell across his forehead in tangled, wild strands, completely stripped of its usual styled precision.

His eyes were bloodshot and brimming with continuous tears, leaving glistening tracks down his dirt smudged skin while his sinuses burned.

A streak of dark alley soot was smeared across the prominence of his left cheekbone, emphasizing the pale, exhausted complexion underneath.

Subtle lines of discomfort tightened around the corners of his mouth as he suppressed a wince, the severe collision against the pavement clearly sending throbbing aches through his back and shoulders.

Yet despite the rough battering his body had just endured, his touch remained unbelievably, heartbreakingly tender.

The hand cradling the back of Seonghwa’s head moved with exquisite patience, ringed fingers carding through locks in a slow stroke.

The motion was purely instinctual, a soothing gesture meant to anchor and comfort a traumatized mate.

Every gentle drag of his palm against Seonghwa's scalp radiated an unspoken reverence, silently reassuring the omega that the height was behind them and the hard ground was solid beneath them.

The overwhelming scent radiating from the alpha had completely shifted as well.

The prickly ozone that usually signaled high tension or defensive hostility had dissolved entirely into the dusk breeze.

In its place poured a rich, burning surge of protective cedarwood, rolling off his skin in a warm tide.

The intoxicating aroma enveloped Seonghwa like a thick velvet blanket, seeping deep into his frantic senses and banishing the lingering horror of the fall until his shivering limbs finally began to settle.

A high pitched sneeze suddenly erupted from the space pressed between their chests, breaking the dramatic silence with unexpected lightness.

Seonghwa let out a soft gasp of surprise, heart leaping into his throat as he pushed his weight upward by pressing his scraped palms against Hongjoong’s shoulders.

He shifted his body slightly, craning his neck downward to examine the front of the alpha's fitted dark shirt with anxious eyes.

Tucked securely against the firm expanse of Hongjoong’s chest, the little calico kitten was completely unharmed, blissfully unaware of the harrowing tumble they had just survived.

The tiny creature let out a squeaky meow before poking its soot dusted head straight through the unbuttoned collar of the cotton garment.

It blinked its wide green eyes against the shadowy alley light, twitching its pink nose with unbothered curiosity as it surveyed the strange new world from the warmth of its human fortress.

A loud, congested sniffle echoed through the alleyway as Hongjoong’s chest hitched in a valiant, silent struggle against another impending sneeze.

His eyes glinted with continuous moisture under the streetlights, yet he kept his frame remarkably still so as not to startle the fragile life resting against his sternum.

Slowly, with extreme care, he raised his right hand toward the open collar of his t-shirt.

His fingers slipped gently beneath the fabric, carefully cupping the six ounce passenger and lifting it out into the night air.

Seonghwa remained completely frozen atop the alpha’s chest, paralyzed by the astonishing transformation unfolding directly beneath him.

The man beneath his body was usually a formidable, intimidating force, draped in leather and clanking silver steel.

This was the infamous Kim Hongjoong, the alpha who governed Iron & Ink like a ruthless dictator and bickered with the fiery venom of a demon.

Yet here, sprawling upon the asphalt surrounded by fallen leaves and drifting alley dust, that terrifying facade was thoroughly melting away.

Holding the tiny calico in his palms, Hongjoong showed not a single shred of disgust or irritation.

He made no move to set the creature down on the pavement, nor did he care about the fresh layer of animal dander coating his skin.

Instead, the harsh lines around his watery, reddened eyes softened entirely into a breathtaking expression of warmth.

Lifting his thumb, where dark ink coiled over his knuckle, Hongjoong began to stroke the top of the kitten’s head right between its oversized, floppy ears.

His touch was impossibly light, carried out with a breathtaking tenderness that seemed entirely surreal for a man of his reputation.

The little calico closed its eyes and leaned straight into the caress, letting out a rumbling purr that vibrated against his skin.

“You are a total little nightmare, do you realize that?”

Hongjoong whispered down to the tiny creature.

His voice is raspy with congestion and thoroughly ruined by allergies, yet overflowing with an undeniable sweetness.

“You almost managed to get your mom killed up in that tree.”

The evening air locked completely in Seonghwa's throat, leaving him breathless as he remained sprawled across the alpha's chest.

Hovering merely inches away, his wide eyes drank in every chiseled contour of Hongjoong's face, illuminated by the faint haze of the distant streetlamp filtering into the alleyway.

He traced the sharp line of the man's jaw, where a subtle shadow of dark stubble met the metallic gleam of silver piercings catching the dying twilight.

Intricate black ink crawled boldly up the side of Hongjoong's throat, tracing the lethal curves of a skull encircled by fine dagger blades, a marking that usually struck apprehension into the hearts of passersby.

Yet in this quiet second, the lingering prejudices and guarded judgments Seonghwa had harbored for weeks simply dissolved into the night air.

The man lying beneath him was no longer the abrasive delinquent who blasted heavy metal through shared plaster walls, nor was he the arrogant, sharp-tongued neighbor who scoffed at polite pleasantries in the hallway.

He was a steadfast shield, a fierce protector whose immediate, unthinking reaction to sudden danger was to place himself between a fragile life and the cold earth.

Seonghwa's gaze lingered on the scrapes along Hongjoong's knuckles and the reddened, watery state of his eyes.

Here was an alpha who had launched his own body off a masonry ledge without a moment of hesitation, willingly turning himself into a human cushion to break a devastating fifteen foot plunge.

Here was a man currently enduring an allergic reaction.

His throat congested and his sinuses burning, simply because he could not bear to witness an omega in distress over a tiny, helpless stray.

Deep inside Seonghwa's chest, his heart executed a sudden leap that felt almost terrifying in its intensity, sending a wild current of warmth racing clear to his fingertips.

The towering walls he had spent years meticulously constructing brick by brick, the immaculate, aristocratic armor he wore like a shroud to keep the cruel world at bay, suddenly fractured down the center.

Every carefully cultivated defense shattered into countless glittering shards, undone by the breathtaking contrast of a thumb so tenderly stroking the miniature head of a messy orange kitten.

‘Oh no..’

He gasped internally, inner voice trembling as a sudden panic flared through his thoughts.

‘Oh heaven.. I like him..’

The staggering truth hit his soul with such intensity that his internal composure collapsed into chaos.

He was sprawled entirely on top of a rough around the edges alpha upon the asphalt of a filthy alleyway and he had fallen completely, helplessly in love with the very man he used to treat like an insufferable nuisance.

The emotional shock was so immediate and absolute that his omega entirely bypassed his conscious control.

The lingering sour tang of fear that had saturated the evening air evaporated into the shadows within a single heartbeat.

In its place, an overwhelming tide of sweet, flushed bourbon vanilla erupted from his scent glands, flooding the brick canyon with a decadent warmth.

It was an aroma rich with fondness, soft vulnerability and an undisguised, blooming affection that instantly painted Seonghwa's cheeks in a furious shade of crimson.

The sudden heat radiated clear down his neck, making his skin glow beneath the amber rays of the distant streetlight.

Directly beneath him, the movement of Hongjoong’s hand froze instantly.

The thumb resting on the kitten’s orange forehead remained suspended in the dusk air, halting mid stroke.

The tiny calico let out an indignant little squeak at the sudden loss of affection, wriggling its fluffy shoulders inside Hongjoong's palms while tilting its small head in confusion.

The alpha’s head snapped upward with startling swiftness, bloodshot eyes locking directly onto the blushing omega hovering mere inches above his face.

Even through the severe, punishing congestion completely blocking his inflamed sinuses and turning his respiratory system into an allergic battleground, the seismic shift in Seonghwa’s pheromones struck Hongjoong’s ancient instincts like a shockwave.

They remained intricately tangled together upon the asphalt, the unforgiving ground beneath them completely forgotten amidst the shift in the atmosphere.

Seonghwa’s legs were firmly bracketing Hongjoong’s hips, anchoring the omega’s trembling weight directly over the alpha's lower body in a position of breathtaking intimacy.

Their torsos rested so close that every ragged lift of Seonghwa’s chest pressed flush against Hongjoong’s broad ribcage, transmitting the wild rhythm of their matching heartbeats across the thin layers of cotton.

The surrounding alleyway, with its brick walls, discarded debris and rustling oak leaves, seemed to contract until the entire universe shrank to the narrow space holding their bodies.

Hongjoong’s eyes locked onto Seonghwa’s gaze, pinning the omega in place with an intensity that burned hotter than the dusk breeze.

The ambient chill of the evening vanished instantly, replaced by a pressure that made the surrounding air feel thick, suffocating and charged with static electricity.

Between their pressed frames, the soft purring of the small calico kitten dissolved into meaningless white noise, completely drowned out by the thunderous roar of Hongjoong's own blood pounding against his ears.

Every exquisite detail of the omega's face struck Hongjoong with terrifying clarity.

He watched the rosy flush spreading across Seonghwa’s cheekbones, painting his usual skin in vivid crimson that extended down to his collarbone.

Seonghwa’s soft, bruised pink lips were slightly parted, allowing warm gasps of breath to escape in puffs against Hongjoong’s skin.

Most devastating of all was the complete absence of armor in Seonghwa’s eyes.

The guarded distance, the aristocratic pride and the stubborn defiance that usually shielded the man had completely evaporated into the night air.

In their place shone an unfiltered mix of reverent awe and a desire that sent a shockwave straight through Hongjoong’s chest.

The vulnerability in those dark eyes triggered a surge deep within the alpha’s soul.

His instincts roared to life, flooding his bloodstream with an overwhelming mandate that instantly silenced his physical injuries and allergic agony.

Every fiber of his body aligned toward a single imperative.

‘Mate’

‘Ours’

‘Claim’

A hard knot tightened in Hongjoong’s congested throat, forcing an audible swallow that clicked against the silence of the alleyway.

The throbbing in his back and the sting in his sinuses paled into insignificance compared to the magnetic pull holding him captive beneath the omega's weight.

Slowly, he shifted his center of gravity, flexing his core to elevate his shoulders off the pavement.

He raised his upper body just enough to close the physical gap between their faces, refusing to sever the intense lock of their gazes even for a single second.

With breathtakingly gentle care, he shifted the wriggling calico kitten entirely into the palm of his left hand.

The tiny creature let out a squeak, paws padding lightly against his skin before it nestled into the warmth of his palm.

Now freed from holding the fragile stray, Hongjoong's right hand hovered in the cool space separating their torsos.

Dark, intricate ink spiraled across his knuckles, catching the amber glow as he reached out toward the trembling man straddling his lap.

The silver of his rings brushed against the wool of Seonghwa’s cardigan, creating a whisper of sound in the quiet evening.

The visual contrast was startling, a stark union of tarnished metal and ink against pure knitwear.

Seonghwa shuddered, a soft gasp hitching in his throat as the solid presence of the alpha's hand made contact with his body.

Without breaking the searing intensity of his eyes, Hongjoong slid his palm upward.

His fingers traced the curve of Seonghwa’s waist, mapping the delicate structure of his ribs beneath the layers of clothing.

The heat radiating from his hand burned straight through the fabric, sending shivers cascading down the omega's spine.

Every movement was slow and heavy with unspoken devotion, giving Seonghwa every possible chance to pull away, yet holding him in place with overwhelming tenderness.

His hand continued its ascent until his palm gently cupped the side of Seonghwa’s jawline.

The pad of his thumb settled over the skin of the omega’s throat, resting right above the frantically fluttering pulse point beneath the jaw.

A soft, shuddering gasp tore from Seonghwa’s chest as the pad of the alpha's thumb pressed into the skin of his neck.

Rather than pulling away from the unfamiliar touch, he surrendered completely, leaning the full weight of his cheek against those heavily ringed fingers while his lashes fluttered shut for a brief, breathless second.

The stark contrast between the icy silver metal on Hongjoong’s knuckles and the blazing heat radiating from his palm sent shivers cascading down the omega’s spine.

All around them, the alleyway remained heavy with the rich aroma of warm bourbon vanilla, thick and fragrant enough to coat the tongue like velvet.

“Seonghwa..”

Hongjoong murmured, voice sounding like a ruined whisper that vibrated straight through the omega’s entire core.

The allergic congestion in his lungs made his breath rattle slightly, yet the intensity behind his words carried an undeniable, magnetic power.

The alpha tilted his chin upward, eyes dropping from Seonghwa’s tear-rimmed gaze to trace the pink contour of his slightly parted lips.

“Your.. your.. scent is flooding the alley..”

Hongjoong rasped out, chest heaving as he took in another inhale of the sweet vanilla air.

“I know..”

Seonghwa breathed in return, voice trembling like a reed swaying in an autumn wind.

He made no attempt to disguise the overwhelming pheromonal shift, knowing full well that any lingering pretense of composure had long since evaporated into the evening air.

Opening his eyes, he stared down at the alpha with a breathtaking vulnerability that exposed every tender emotion residing in his soul.

“I am so sorry but I cannot stop it..”

Seonghwa admitted, gaze locked onto the dirt-smudged features beneath him.

Hongjoong’s thumb stroked the skin of Seonghwa’s throat in a deliberate arc that felt like liquid fire scorching his nerve endings.

The physical proximity between them was dizzying.

He was mere millimeters away from hooking his hand around the back of Seonghwa's neck, dragging the omega down against his chest and sinking his sharp fangs deep into that tempting scent gland to permanently claim the fierce, beautifully complex creature who had completely upended his structured existence.

The instinct inside his chest clawed at his restraint, screaming at him to yield to the sweet bourbon vanilla consuming his senses.

Yet just as the dark tide of his alpha instincts threatened to drag him under, a bizarre shift occurred within the depths of his exhausted, adrenaline-addled mind.

Through the thick haze of allergy-induced brain fog, severe nasal congestion and physical exhaustion, a scent unexpectedly drifted out from the vault of his childhood memories.

The vivid image flashed across his consciousness with startling, crystal clarity.

He suddenly recalled a sunlit, muddy sports field drenched in warm summer rain, the sting of a bloody, scraped knee and the vision of a small, elegant boy dressed in a blue sailor shirt, stepping forward with tearful, wide eyes while extending a handkerchief embroidered with tiny yellow daisies.

‘When we are finally grown up, I am going to claim you as my mate.’

The forgotten echo of that high, sweet childhood promise shattered the silence of Hongjoong’s mind with the devastating velocity of a stray bullet tearing through thin glass.

The unexpected memory struck so violently that his entire frame flinched against the pavement, a harsh tremor racking his shoulders.

That single voice, preserved from a sunlit field in his forgotten past, resonated through the alleyway and instantly obliterated the heady spell holding him captive.

A wave of guilt surged through his chest like a poison, drowning out the possessive surge of his alpha instincts in a single heartbeat.

The ancient imperative to claim, mark and possess evaporated into thin air, replaced by a shame that chilled him straight to the marrow.

He was currently holding Park Seonghwa, feeling the exquisite, rapid flutter of the omega's heart against his own and drowning in an intoxicating sea of flushed bourbon vanilla.

Every fiber of his present reality screamed at him to surrender to the gorgeous, vulnerable man straddling his hips.

Yet despite the overwhelming temptation resting upon his chest, his soul felt irrevocably tethered to a phantom from his childhood, bound by a sacred, unfulfilled vow made to the ghost of Anyang under a long-forgotten summer sky.

The hypocrisy of his desire struck him like a physical blow, making every drop of warm vanilla in the air feel like a bitter betrayal of his own heart.

Hongjoong’s jaw clenched with such force that a prominent muscle jumped beneath the dirt-smudged contour of his cheek.

Biting back a congested inhale, he marshaled every remaining shred of his shattered willpower to break the intimate spell lingering between their faces.

He forced his ringed fingers to uncurl from the soft skin of Seonghwa’s neck, dragging his hand away from the tempting warmth of the omega's throat.

The sudden loss of that radiant, tender contact felt like plunging his bare arm straight into a bucket of ice water, leaving his skin aching with an emptiness that echoed through the alleyway.

Seonghwa blinked in stunned silence, a flash of bewilderment and hurt crossing his features as the warmth of the alpha's hand vanished from his skin.

The abrupt withdrawal felt almost like a physical blow, leaving his neck feeling instantly chilled in the air.

The rich, sweet cloud of vanilla floating between them wavered uncertainly.

Its vibrant, confident warmth falters into a wounded haze.

“Hongjoong-ssi?”

Seonghwa whispered, voice small and trembling like a fallen leaf drifting on the evening draft.

Before the alpha could formulate a coherent word of explanation, his immune system launched a ruthless counterattack, completely shattering the emotional spell.

The burning tickle deep inside his sinuses leaped back to life, overpowering his train of thought as the severe allergic reaction returned with vengeance.

“Ah.. Ah—Choo!”

Hongjoong turned his head away, burying his flushed face into the sleeve of his shoulder to avoid blowing the tiny creature out of his hands or deafening the omega.

The massive sneeze ripped through his upper body with body-shaking power, the reverberation echoing loudly against the brick walls of the narrow alleyway.

A second violent spasm racked his chest, sending a fresh wave of tears streaming down his cheekbones and blurring his vision into a mess of shadows and streetlights.

He sniffled wetly, throat feeling completely closed up as he fought for oxygen against the overwhelming cloud of cat dander clinging to his t-shirt.

Bracing one palm against the rough concrete, Hongjoong forced himself to sit all the way up.

His shoulders hunched over his lap.

The movement forced Seonghwa to unceremoniously slide off his hips, knees coming to rest on the asphalt beside the alpha.

The sudden physical distance allowed the biting night chill to rush into the empty space where their chests had been pressed together, widening the emotional chasm between them.

Refusing to meet Seonghwa's searching eyes, Hongjoong kept his gaze fixed on the cracked pavement beneath his boots.

His jaw remained clenched, a muscle working beneath his skin as he wrestled with the weight of the past.

Cupping his palms together with extreme care, he gently extended the calico kitten across the gap separating them like a fragile peace offering.

“Take him..”

Hongjoong rasped out, voice sounding thoroughly thick, ruined and heavily congested, yet carrying an underlying note of silent misery.

Seonghwa reached out with aching fingers, carefully receiving the squirming calico from Hongjoong's palms.

The tiny animal let out a soft, high pitched squeak before instinctively burrowing its dirty snout into the warm, woolly fold of Seonghwa's upper chest.

Cradling the fragile creature like precious glass, Seonghwa scrambled awkwardly to his feet, attempting to reclaim whatever remaining shreds of his dignity survived on the filthy alley asphalt.

His trembling hands swept frantically over the front of his ruined cream cardigan, trying to smooth down the torn fibers while loose bark chips and alley dirt rained down onto his shoes.

Every motion was stiff, guarded and painfully mechanical.

The overwhelming wave of warm bourbon vanilla that had saturated the dusk air pulled back in a sudden retreat, vanishing into a thread as he hastily rebuilt his impenetrable aristocratic armor.

Hongjoong rose from the pavement at a much slower pace, a pained groan vibrating through his chest as his severely bruised spine and shoulder blades protested the exertion.

He made no effort to brush the dark soot away from the knees of his jeans.

Instead, he remained frozen in place beside the looming masonry, staring intently at a patch of peeling paint on the opposite brick wall while dragging the back of his wrist across his streaming eyes to wipe away the continuous moisture.

“Thank you.”

Seonghwa said, words cutting through the quiet gloom of the alleyway.

His tone had been entirely stripped of the tender warmth that had filled the air only moments prior.

His voice sounded formal and controlled, every syllable heavy with carefully suppressed heartache.

He had retreated completely behind his refined, noble mask, erecting a towering wall of polite distance between them.

“I really appreciate you catching.. us.”

“Just stay out of the trees.”

Hongjoong ground out through his throat.

His voice sounded thick, nasal and ruined by his raging allergies.

He kept his head turned resolutely toward the bricks, refusing to let his gaze shift even a fraction of an inch toward the omega.

He simply could not afford to look.

Deep down in his chest, he knew that if he allowed his eyes to fall upon Seonghwa's breathtaking face or those soft, kissable lips, every lingering thread of his willpower would crumble and he would break his sacred childhood vow beyond repair.

“Next time, just call the fire department.”

Seonghwa’s jaw tightened into a graceful line, throat working on a hard swallow as he pulled the tiny kitten closer to his pounding heart.

“I definitely will.”

Without uttering another syllable, Seonghwa pivoted on his heel.

He hurried down the alleyway, wrapping both arms securely around his chest to keep the tiny calico pressed safely against the warmth of his cardigan.

The kitten let out a feeble, muffled mew against his collarbone.

Its miniature paws clutching at the woolly fabric as if sensing the emotional storm swirling inside its new caretaker.

Every rapid stride took Seonghwa farther away from the suffocating confusing atmosphere that lingered around the alpha, fleeing the rich scent of burned cedar and the dizzying memory of those ringed hands touching his neck.

Left completely alone amidst the darkening shadows, Hongjoong stood rooted to the pavement like a statue.

He listened in silence as the clicking of Seonghwa's fine dress shoes echoed off the walls, gradually growing fainter until the sound dissolved entirely into the nocturnal quiet of the sleeping city.

A stray gust of wind swept down the corridor, swirling dry oak leaves around his boots and carrying away the heavenly perfume of bourbon vanilla.

Bending down with a pained grunt from his bruised back, Hongjoong retrieved his discarded leather jacket from the asphalt, shaking off the dirt before slinging the garment over one shoulder.

His physical condition remained a complete disaster.

His eyes burned with continuous tearful moisture, sinuses felt stuffed with lingering cat dander and his chest rattled with every restricted breath he managed to pull into his lungs.

Yet the sting in his respiratory system paled in comparison to the ache tearing through his chest, where his heart felt as though it had been pulverized into pieces.

In the span of a few brief minutes, he had managed to rescue the omega from a dangerous fall, feeling the barriers between their guarded souls crumble into dust during that intoxicating, shared moment on the pavement.

Yet driven by the memory of a childhood vow, he had immediately rebuilt those emotional walls higher and thicker than ever before, brutally pushing Seonghwa away for the sake of a long forgotten boy who probably had zero memory of his existence or his name.

Turning slowly away from the empty street where Seonghwa had vanished, Hongjoong dragged his boots across the cracked concrete toward the weathered iron back door of his tattoo parlor.

Before his hand could even reach the icy brass handle, his stubborn immune system betrayed him once more, forcing a sneeze to rip through his congested throat and echo pathetically into the silent night air.

He paused in the doorway, sniffling wetly while wiping his streaming eyes on the sleeve of his shirt.

Stepping inside the familiar interior saturated with the smell of stencil ink and green soap, he allowed the iron door to clatter shut behind him, carrying a crushing weight upon his bruised shoulders that was rapidly becoming far too heavy for one heart to bear.

Notes:

Thank you so much for reading Chapter 7 🍀🩷!

I honestly don't know whether to laugh or cry at this scene. On one hand, we have Hongjoong literally sacrificing his lungs and spine for a six-ounce calico menace because Seonghwa asked him to.

On the other hand, the ANGST.

The emotional whiplash of Seonghwa realizing his feelings on the alley pavement, only for Hongjoong's self-imposed childhood loyalty to come crashing in and rebuild every single wall..

My heart hurts for both of them. ☹️🍀🩷

Poor Seonghwa is walking away feeling so rejected and Hongjoong is sneezing his soul out while carrying a promise that might involve the very man he just pushed away. Ehem ehem..

By the way, what should Seonghwa name our little soot-dusted calico passenger?
