Summary:

"Cadmium and Iron are together now!"
One sentence.
One sentence was all it took to shatter Oxygen's whole life.
No matter.
He'll get his precious Iron, no matter what.

Chapter Text

Oxygen humed to himself, typing the final section of his message. He was going to do it! He was finally going to do it! Everyone would be so happy. They would be so perfect together! He was just about to hit send, when he got a message. He saw it was from Hydrogen. They were pretty chill, if intense, so Oxygen figured it couldn't be too bad news. He clicked on the text.

He was wrong. It was the worst news possible.

Hydrogen Bomb:

i js got the news!

Cadmium and Iron are together now!

Oxygen So You Can Breathe:

oh

good for them

Oxygen was numb.

His love. His light. Stolen from him by that social idiot Cadmium.

Slowly, Oxygen's numbness combusted into anger.

How dare they. How dare they stand there and-and applaud while Iron was cut off from his life? His light? His love? They would pay. All of them.

Oxygen watched the bickering unfold and the well-wishes pour in, a maniac grin blossoming on his face. Soon. Soon Iron would be his, and they would be free from these distractions forever.

Oxygen started humming again, pulling out a fresh notebook. He open a container of paint markers-the exact same ones that Iron used-and prepared to start writing on the cover. He thought back to chemistry class. What happens when you mix Iron and Oxygen together? Ferrous Oxide. Rust.

He uncapped a reddish brown marker and wrote in bold letters on the glossy black surface of his notebook.

OPERATION RUST. He turned to the first page, dividing it up into seven sections. In each section, he drew a little portrait of everyone in the group chat. Chlorine, Sodium, Helium, Lithium, Hydrogen, Cadmium, and finally Iron. Oxygen took special care when drawing the last one. He turned the page and got out a pencil. He titled the page: CHLORINE.

He began to write.
