Chapter Text

The Halloween party was in full swing. Blue had spent all day running around the loft trying to get everything ready. And she had been mulling over the whole Michael Keaton thing that she had taken into her own hands. Ronan had spent most of the day not in the loft, but when he came back, he stormed right back into his room. She did not even bother to ask him where he had been or what he had been doing. She wondered if he had gone to see Adam and work out all the shit that’s between them.

She allowed some people inside greeting them cordially. Blue wasn’t exactly sure who they were but as long as they didn’t try to steal anything from her she didn’t really care. She grew up in a small house with at least 10 people living there at one time. Crowds did not bother her. Gansey came out from some cranny of the loft, in a ridiculous looking costume. He had a crown on his head and looked like he had rolled in from the fourteenth century. He gave a bright smile to Blue when he saw her.

“Jane! What a splendid party you’re throwing so far. What are you supposed to be?” he asked.

She looked at the outfit she had come up with. “Ziggy Stardust,” she replied. She had spent a lot of time doing her makeup for this costume, and she would be damned if she didn’t get recognition for it.

Gansey tilted his head to the side. “Who?”

Blue raised her eyebrows looking up at him. God, this was the man she had a crush on? She questioned her own choices, and she was giving Adam shit?

“You don’t know who that is?”

Gansey opened his mouth, looking her up and down. Blue cut him off before he could begin waving her hand in dismissal.

“Forget it. The real question is, what are you?”

“Glendower, of course! This is based on what he would have worn during his time.”

Blue scoffed. Questionable choices. “God, really? Of course, you would.”

Someone then wrapped an arm around Blue from behind. She looked over her shoulder to see Noah in a Ghostbusters costume. His white hair had been styled back to his normal way but had hints of green in it. He smiled at the two of them.

“Who you gonna call?” he asked.

“I’m not responding to that,” Blue said.

Noah pouted at her. “Aw, you’re no fun. And I see Gansey has decided to go as he always does for Halloween, as his boner crush, Glendower. Original, my king.”

Gansey sputtered. “Noah! Really, right in front of Jane?”

“Oh shut it, Gansey. I’ve heard worse. We all live with Ronan, remember?”

That caused Gansey to shut his mouth. He nodded his head in agreement. Blue took a sip from the drink she had in her hand. She had put too much vodka into it. Calla would be proud of her.

“Do you like my costume?”

They all turned to look at Ronan. Who was dressed in such a fashion opposite of him that Blue was stunned. He wore a button-up and blazer but had a pair of glasses that were tapped in the middle, like some stereotypical nerd. And because Ronan couldn’t dress normally ever, had a sign around his neck with a crudely drawn dick on it. Something one would find in high school boys bathrooms, or even in a bar bathroom.

“I’m Dick. Get it?” he asked. He still had a scowl on his face, but he was returning to his normal behavior.

Gansey threw his hands in the air. “Oh how original Ronan. What is this, pick on me day?”

“Every day is that day because you make it so easy,” Ronan quipped.

“Ronan, I thought you weren’t coming,” Blue said.

He rolled his eyes and looked directly at Blue. “I changed my mind. I re-read some recent letters lately. I feel like Keaton would want me to be here, so here I am.”

Then he looked at Gansey and Noah. They both had looks on their faces that showed worry but were desperately trying to hide it. “Good costume, Czerny. If you haven’t said the dick line, then you suck at being a ghost hunter.”

With that he walked away, taking a good drink of whatever alcohol was in his cup, and melting into the crowd. When he was out of sight and hearing range, Blue turned to the two of them. She threw her hands up.

“Shit, what am I going to do? Adam’s on his way now!” she stage whispered.

Gansey’s hazel eyes were wide. “We have bigger problems. Ronan re-read some letters. Doing re-reads means he’s figuring it out! We have a Truman Show situation at hand.”

Noah nodded his head. “Truman Show. I love that movie,” he said before sipping.

Gansey shook his head. “Noah, I’m pretty sure you’ve never seen that movie.”

“Yeah, I have. It’s about the Civil War.”

Gansey looked at Noah like he desperately wanted to correct him but shook his head instead.

“All of you, outside now,” Blue demanded. She ushered them outside the loft and into the empty one across the hall for a quick meeting.

“Noah, I need you to go to Adam’s and stall him.”

Noah nodded his head and saluted. He moved a pair of goggles over his eyes and grabbed his ghost sucking machine in his hands.

“You called the right person! I’m on it!” Then he ran out the door, down the hallway and out of sight. Blue took another large sip and coughed.

“Blue, go easy. You don’t do great with alcohol,” Gansey warned.

“I got this.”

She whipped out the old laptop that had been in the loft. It was what she had used to write the last letter. Claiming Keaton had gone digital to keep up with the ages. She opened it up and typed in the address.

“You’re in grave danger. Leave where you are immediately,” she said narrating what she wrote. Then she clicked enter, sending it.

Gansey gasped. “Did you just send that?” he exclaimed.

Blue looked up. She could feel the alcohol muddling her brain. “Yeah.”

“A team should talk about a decision before you send something!”

Blue lifted her arms in the air. “Sorry! Thought it was good!”

Gansey put his head into his hands letting out an uncharacteristic groan. “Oh Blue. Oh, God. We have to fix this.”

Just as Blue was about to send another email, pounding on the door was heard.

“Shit,” Gansey cursed. Also uncharacteristic. Also kinda hot. Blue cursed her brain for those thoughts.

She closed the laptop and tossed it somewhere not caring if it broke. They both fixed their costumes and straightened it out. Blue opened the door tentatively, but it was only a few kids in costumes.

“Trick-or-treat!” They called.

Blue and Gansey looked at each other before back to the kids. Blue put a smile on her face.

“Sorry kids, but we just ran out of candy. Try going to the next floor!” she said.

A series of “aww mans” echoed but the kids shuffled along. Gansey grabbed Blue’s hand which caused heat to flood to her cheeks. But the makeup covered it thankfully. They both re-entered the party as nothing had happened. Blue and Gansey made their way to the kitchen which had turned into a quasi-bar and grabbed some more drinks. In the corner, she saw Ronan sitting in a chair sipping it causally. He caught Blue’s eye, and his eyes narrowed before turning his attention elsewhere like he couldn’t care about anything.

Blue decided to go up to him. “Ronan, you’re still here?” she asked.

He tilted his head watching her from his seat. “You act like you’re surprised.”

Blue put her hands on her hips. “Well, it’s just that…” she started not knowing how she wanted to end that sentence.

“Just what, Maggot?” he sneered.

Gansey had come up behind her to watch. “It’s just that social gatherings aren’t really your thing. Thought you would’ve bailed by now,” Gansey said saving Blue.

“Oh, yeah I got a weird thing from Keaton a few minutes ago. He said I was in danger and to leave. Weird right?” he said. Ronan made a show of taking out his phone, which he hated and scrolling through it. “Time stamped eight minutes ago. But I don’t see any danger.”

“Yeah that is weird,” Blue muttered.

“Perhaps the only danger is getting stabbed in the back by my friends,” he declared.

Gansey and Blue gaped at Ronan. His blue eyes were blazing and he took a large gulp. He threw the cup to the ground and stood up. He used his height to his advantage.

“Do you guys think I’m stupid? I knew the entire time, all right.”

“How..how did you know?” Blue asked.

Ronan scoffed and rolled his eyes. “You think I wouldn’t notice differences in handwriting? Or the differences in tone of writing? I found Gansey’s stupid stash of my letters years ago.”

Gansey shook his head. “Why didn’t you tell me then?”

Ronan threw his hands in the air. “I don’t know. It felt kind of nice confiding in someone. I’m not good with words you know that. But writing those stupid letters helped me get over a lot of shit. Gansey, you’re my best friend. If anyone should know all that stupid stuff about me, it should be you.”

As Ronan finished his little rant, his eyes went behind him and widened. Blue and Gansey turned to see that Noah and Adam had arrived. Noah shrugged his shoulders and mouth “I tried to stop him!” Adam was dressed in armor like a knight and had a long white cape behind him. His right hand was in a gold glove. Blue did not know how much Adam heard but his eyebrows rose on his head. Blue cursed and then ran towards Adam. She grabbed his hand and dragged him towards the bathroom and shut the door.

“Shit, Adam. I did not know he was going to be here, I swear.”

Adam had a little smile on his face. “I did say I’d like to see you try to get rid of him. It’s okay, really. It’s actually perfect.”

Blue was confused. “What do you mean?”

“Well, I’m still not going to tell you what happened because that can stay between me and Ronan. But, I do wish to talk to him about some things to clear the air. And I do want us to be together...like not in secret.”

“Are you serious?” she asked.

Adam slowly nodded his head. “Yeah. I mean it’s time.”

Blue processed that for a moment before she went forward and hugged Adam tightly. Adam let out a groan but laughed and returned the hug.

“God it’s about fucking time you developed some sense,” she muttered.

“Hey! If I can figure my shit out with Ronan, then you should be able to with Gansey too. Just ask the man out and put him out of his misery.”

“No talk of my love life! This is about you!” Blue exclaimed.

They both shared a laugh together. Blue was happy to see Adam like this. She looked at his costume again, getting a better look at it.

“Who are you supposed to be anyway?”

“Jaime Lannister,” he replied, “but not from the show. From the books.”

Blue rolled her eyes. “Of course, you geek.”

“No slander!”

They both walked out of the bathroom where Gansey, Ronan, and Noah were all having their boy talks. Adam heaved a deep breath. Blue watched as he instinctively tried to find a cigarette, before remembering Blue had tossed his out the window this morning. His hand clenched into a fist instead and he walked forward. All three boys stopped talking as they saw Adam approach. Adam gave them a polite nod and looked at Ronan.

“Ronan, hi,” he breathed out.

“Parrish,” Ronan replied. There wasn’t much ice in the tone anymore.

“Can I speak to you outside? It’s important.”

“Officially come to break up?” Ronan bit.

Adam let out a breathless chuckle. “Quite the opposite actually.”

Ronan nodded after a moment and they all watched as they went to the outside balcony. They kicked the other people who were loitering outside so they could have some privacy. They could see faint silhouettes of them outside talking. After a few minutes of them talking, Blue saw their shadows lean in and kiss each other.

Noah let out a whoop. Gansey smiled brightly, and Blue clapped her hands.

“Finally! Peace has been restored!” Noah cried out.
