Chapter Text

At the end of the night, Claude finds the golden retriever staring at him from across the courtyard: stance rigid and eyes aglow, unblinking. It does not move. It does not bark. The space in between them is filled solely with the sound of the night breeze sweeping against the remains of grass.

“Hey, dude,” he projects his voice from his chest in hopes of reaching the dog’s ears. “I’ve been looking for you all night, you know.”

The dog remains motionless.

Claude, pushing through the cold shivers, continues. “Every room. Every closet. Every nook and cranny under Dedue’s nose. And now you finally show your face.”

It lifts its tail but does not wag.

“I’m Claude.” His hand lifts towards the dog. “Your owner was a friend of mine.”

At those words the dog steps forward, slowly and cautiously dragging before bouncing into an enthusiastic trot. Claude’s heart sinks as he drops to his knees, letting the retriever worm its nose into his arms.

“Good boy, good boy,” he coos as he brings his hands through its floppy ears. “You’re a good dog.”

The dog’s jaw lowers, curling its lips into a smile as its tongue unfurls.

“You’re so good. You have no idea.” Claude weeps as he brings the dog’s forehead to his own. “You have absolutely no idea.”

Notes:

Finally got a surprise in. :)

Once again, thank you all so much for reading, enjoying, and resonating with this piece of work. I haven't responded to your comments yet because I'm absolutely speechless, but just know that I read every response and I'm floored by all of your praise. Forever, I am grateful.

My journey ends here but thank you for coming along for the ride.

Notes:

I told myself that I was going to retire from writing fic after Atoll because I was burnt out on the obligation that I have to keep writing. But it turned out to be very hard to quell my creative spirit so I was working on this as a surprise after already saying that I had no further plans to keep writing. But then I hit a snag and thought I should abandon this project. I thought Atoll ended just where it needed to be and I shouldn't be writing if I didn't want to.

And then I got this anonymous scathing review in the comments for Atoll in which someone hated me and my writing style so much, I had no choice but to continue writing out of spite. It all worked out!

As always, there's a Spotify playlist for this fic. I've linked it here. Click me.

I haven't gotten around to responding to all the comments on Atoll yet but know that I've read every single one and I am overwhelmed by all of your praise and support. I cannot thank you all enough. It really means a lot to me personally that so many of you enjoyed reading it and even resonating with its themes and content. Thank you so much.
