Chapter 1: the gods

Chapter Text

Legends told of the five Gods, as if they came from yesterday. Word spread, and people were petrified. The story became routine, like a little tale to tell to children when they’d get in bed. Everyone knew it, and those who didn’t, found out of the five Guardians quite quickly.

It told of their story, of their past, their present, and their future. It told of the wonders they brought, and the anguish they’ve caused. With good comes evil, and they were the clear proof. They were just as evil as they were good.

They spared, they healed, they loved and they hated.

One thing everyone knows to this day; they watch everyone, and they remain in the mortal realm. They judge and they punish. They wait and they hunt. It’s all a matter of survival for the mortals. To them, it is as simple as a game of chess.

They bear different names. They are Gods, Demons, Guardians, Fallen Angels, or just beings that have come to cause chaos. No one knows their true title, and they never spoke to tell it.

Adults told their story to their children, and warned them of those Gods. The young ones were told not to go outside late at night, otherwise, they would be taken away and eaten. At least, that’s what the adults said would happen.

It was never proven if these beings actually took children away to devour them, and those who actually disappeared, actually ended up coming back an hour later laughing at whoever they managed to scare with their joke.

As scary as the tales were, none were actually taken seriously. Not when the years passed, not when nothing happened.

No children were taken, no souls were eaten, and everyone was safe. Of course, word still spread as quickly as fire did, and the tales never died.

One day, a group of children went on an adventure in a forest, near a village set towards the South. It was said that the Gods were more than often hidden within the woods, waiting and hunting. So, the kids went in, laughing and mocking the Guardians.

The moon was high in the sky, and just as quickly as the children got inside the forest, they came out sprinting back to their homes, crying and screaming.

Although their voices kept cracking, through broken sobs and shouts, they told of the Insane God. They said how talk he was, how he looked down at them, and screamed so loud their ears nearly started bleeding.

That’s when the village knew they had been warned by the Gods. A screech so loud that even the farthest town had been able to hear it. If another child, or human, was to enter those woods again, the Gods wouldn’t spare.

Soon, the village built fences around, trying its best to protect the residents. They were high enough to keep the beast away, high enough so the wolves wouldn’t jump and cross them.

However, the Gods easily walked over them.

The village was razed, and the ashes of a once happy town was all that was left when the residents of the nearest village came to check if any survivors remained.

Nothing was left.

The Gods gave a warning to everyone. If they were to be disrespected, they would cause carnage. Although some questioned if that was fair, others knew the Gods did as they pleased.

Other towns built fences to keep themselves protected from the Demons’ wrath, and yet, that wasn’t enough. One after the other, the villages fell and went up in flames, and the few that survived, told of the Gods.

They noticed that the Guardians never attacked together, and that each village that was destroyed seemed to have gone down a different way. From there, they found out which God attacked.

The villages that were razed, completely burnt to the ground, was the work of none other than the Insane God. It loved to watch as the houses burned, and enjoyed hearing the screams of the citizens. The ones that made it out alive, said it would sit back and relax on one of the collapsing ins, and told of how the fires never seemed to injure the God.

The town that went up in a giant explosion, was the work of the Explosive God. It bore its name with pride, and made sure to keep it. Each village that was in contact with this God, was blown up to bits. No survivors are known to have made it out of the God’s explosions.

Then, there were the villages that were torn down in a quite special way. The Chaotic God loved to break the town in a different way each time. It could go from, either taking away children, to straight up taking away the house and food, leaving the villagers to die. One thing that people have noticed, was that the cows were always spared, if there were any.

The Ender God never caused fires, never broke houses and never killed animals. It took control of the villagers, putting them under some sort of spell and lured them out into the woods. Those people were never found, and if they died, their remains were never discovered.

The last God was the most feared. It didn’t raze the villages, it never set fire to the lands. It demanded blood. No amount of blood was ever enough for the Blood God. It demanded more each time, and if one village wasn’t enough, it moved on to the next.

They ruled the lands with fear, and the people did in fact fear them. They made sure no wrongs were done, and yet, also attacked if the people acted according to their wishes. Soon, some people became mad, and started sacrificing other beings. Those sacrifices were not taken, because at night, they could hear the Gods laugh.

They laughed at how stupid the humans were and declined the offerings. Nothing could be done, the Gods were never happy with the people.

After years of fear, a village rose into an empire, and to try and keep itself safe, it no longer just built fences, it built walls of iron, so high they would nearly reach the skies and the stars. No one was allowed to leave the walls, and those who did never came back.

Outside of the walls, the Guardians were furious, and if the storms weren’t what kept the people awake, the deranged and furious screams did the trick.

The empire held on for years, and it still holds on to this day. At night, the screams remained, and although they were angry, they never got past the walls.

No one was allowed in or out of the walls.

And yet, the Gods were determined to get through.

They would get through.

They will.

One day, they will.
